What's the best adhesive to use for gluing rubber soles back together? I tried rubber cement and JB Weld and they just split back apart after a few weeks.

noob of woodturning here
i have a little question
yesterday i bought a cheap wood lathe
and i want to buy a chuck for it
but i don't know what type of chuck i can attach to them
can they all attach to every lathe ?

also general wood turning thread

I use a Nova G3 chuck for bowls and just some cheap PSI spur drive and live center for spindles/between centers work.

That said, I am terrible at woodturning and still can't get the hang of the skew chisel without 100% risk of a catch so yes that tool in particular scares the shit out of me. I'm considering getting those EZ carbide turning tools as a result.

What concerns should I address? How do I avoid killing myself in the process? Should I deal with state/county/city permits? What can I use to reinforce it best without overdoing it? How about water tables? I'm on a hill and I'd hate to see the building pop out of the ground at the first sign of rain.

Go to the city and request a permit
Read about pouring concrete and shit
Have money for more qualified people to do it for you.

I've found that 40W is wholly insufficient for most phased plasma rifle builds. You've got to get up into the 50W range to really put some oomph downfield.

i'm currently thinking about a project that would require some exotic materials.
does anyone know how much cost the following component (forged, not raw):
-Kevlar
-Titanium
-Carbon fiber

thank you

if you're this stupid and can't even find materials, you're not capable of working with so-called exotic materials. Exotic when, 1940?

What's the best way to improve the growth of vegetables?
What's the first thing to consider? Nutrients? Fertilizers? Something else?

I'm asking because I have just started cultivating vegetables in my garden, and I'm seeking to improve my yields.

It depends on the specific crop. Honestly. Different vegetables, like different animals, have different "diets". Google your specific crop and see what it needs in terms of specific minerals and pH balance.

How to grow fish in a backyard? Let's assume I already have a small artificial body of water.
15 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1020534
first step is, get a fish that will withstand the climate you live in
after that put the said fish in the body of water
after that feed it accordingly to its natural desire (not everyday I assume)
and thats about it
>>
How big a body of water? What kind of fish were you hoping to keep? We need more details than that.
>>
>>1020534
Fish can't live in your pool. They don't like chlorine.

Someone knows how to make a sandclock?
for almost 25 minutes and small... you know, to go
28 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
First step is to put some regular-sized sand in a sand grinder, to mill it down to the appropriate size. Wear a respirator, the dust can cause sand madness.

Heat up two marbles in the oven on the clean cycle for five hours, then jam a straw in each one and blow really, really hard to evacuate the center. Pour the ground sand down the straws, pull them out and mash 'em together to connect the openings that were left.

For the frame, try two dimes and some toothpicks that are nicely chromed. Electroplating the wood is left as an exercise for the reader.

Suggestions for keeping birds away from fruit plants?

Would like to be able to redneck this out instead of putting out more cash. Have plenty of scrap stuff to improvise with...

(yes I have a potato gun but it wouldn't really be practical to be standing out there, waiting for a bird to show up)

(and no, killing them is not really an option either)

hey /diy/!

Just wondering if anyone has any experience creating the same sort of "solid-bar" effect that you get on voice coils on the actuators on hard drives?

I am thinking about maybe using epoxy to bond the coils together (i am slightly nervous that it may damage the insulation on the enamelled wire) and am also unsure whether to coat each layer or just the outside.

Of course i will probably try a few combinations but am just curious if anyone has tried something similar and if so if they had any hints or tips as my google-fu has failed me on this occasion.
Thanks!

I have two phones, one being an iphone 5 that has an overheating problem.

My solution to this would be designing a case with a cpu fan or something similar to cool the phone.

I am asking you to help me build a blueprint for it since I am not knowledgeable enough with wiring.

My original idea was to buy a cheap iphone case and cut the back out, buy a micro cpu fan or two and super glue them to the cut out, the powering of these fans is stumping me.
Please help

Im starting an aquaponics set up and had a question about lightbulbs.

I have this clipon light fixture that recommends a 40 watt incandescent or 13 watt cfl.

CFL bulbs run cooler right? Is anything stopping me from using a 40 watt cfl?
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1022205
Yes. Light spectrum. CFLs do not do the broad spectrum of colour that incandescents do, meaning your biomass is getting less light for no good reason. Unless you are going full retard on LEDs and such, incandescent evey time.
>>
>>1022209
Can you elaborate? I've never heard anyone suggest using incandescent lamps for growing. It's all led, cfl or metal halides
>>
You just have to make sure you hit all your required frequencies. Obviously the most important frequencies you gotta about are chlorophyll a (429nm or 662nm) and chlorophyll b (453nm or 642nm). Then there are additional frequencies you have to worry about depending on the plant. LED setups are the best when you know exactly what plant you're using to maximize efficiency.

Hey, /diy/

My mic cable snapped internally and I've managed to separate it where the fault occured and strip both ends.

Seems to have two wire bundles inside, each containing a nylon bundle.

My plan for fixing it is taking a lighter to each wire end and burning away the nylon, intertwining the wires, heating the wire with a lighter and then applying solder.

Will finish it off with some electrical tape for insulation.

Anyone see a problem with the plan?

There is a reason soldering iron exists, so use it
>>
>>1022184
Would do if I owned one, but I don't do enough soldering to justify buying one when a small roll of solder and a disposable lighter are so much cheaper for a one-off job
