How much effort should it be to remud a room?
I've been working since Friday (with a significant break yesterday) and I'm nearing the point where I'm ready to paint. I've used 70lbs of joint compound already and I'm feeling like this is too much as I haven't even done the ceiling yet. How badly did I screw up?
On a side topic, at what point do you say the job is too big for you and hire someone. I'm starting to doubt my ability here.

I am working on a idea for some remote controlled equipment via phone
Initially I thought about data over sms but then found DTMF solutions as pictured
I am looking to do some kind of remote home automation like adjusting thermostat or opening garage door via text or call
I also located a carrier called Truphone that provides global phone coverage through their own network and allows free incoming calls inside the US and UK I verified with their rep at the call center that you pay upfront for the sim card ($20) and some prepaid minutes (the minimum) and it can sit dormant for 180 days at a time and only needs 1 call or text to keep the account alive with incoming is always free.
Does anybody have sujestions on weather to go with a cheap DTMF solution or something arduino or Pi based with a virtual operator asking for button presses?

Text messages are cheaper than voice calls, and you'd need to be making voice calls to transmit DTMF.
Cell phones don't use DTMF. If you hit a button while talking the other end doesn't hear DTMF like with land line phones. You'll have to create an app or external device that plays DTMF into the cell phone voice connection.
Voice calls through a cell network are digitized and compressed. Your DTMF could look like background noise and get filtered out.

Does it have to have a phone on the other end? You could get a raspberry pi and control stuff over SSH from yhe internet. Instead of using a cellphone, you might use a GSM module, which is a cellphone in a handy hackable format.
It might be best to use a GSM module and send it SMS messages to control what you want to do. For best results use encrypted text messages

your 6sn7 is a medium gain dual triode which would be fine for a line level first stage of an audio amp. You would still need some beam power tubes for the output stage. as for the transformers edcor sells very reasonably priced output transformers.

of course you have to match the output tubes with the impedance of the transformer.
You will need a power transformer which edcor sells those as well. You would need a plate voltage of less than 450v using a modern rectifier that would be about 300vac
a beam pentode 6v6 needs a plate voltage of 315vdc you need 220ac for that. You would need 2 6v6's for a single ended amp that would output about 7 watts per channel.

I'm about to refit it with hard panels (instead of canvas) from a 1972 model.

If you're just fucking around, the 12V battery you posted is a sealed lead-acid battery, commonly referred to as an AGM. They are heavy but reliable and hold a good amount of power for their volume. If you know the ampere-hour requirements, you can pretty easily match up a 12V AGM battery. They make them in all sorts of sizes/capicities.
NiMH would not be that great, they are actually a pretty crappy battery. Low charge holding and they deplete when not in use.
Hey /diy/, I'm trying to figure out if it's a bad idea for me to build/use a homemade rotary tool like in pic related, safety wise. I'm planning on using it to cut mdf boards, and pvc piping, nothing particularly strong. Assuming that I use gloves, safety glasses, do you think this is a bad idea, or am I overthinking this?

That on e pictured is very low power and low RPM. It would be quite safe to build and use. Operation would be slow. If you decide to use an AC/DC wall unit, make sure it has at least a 2 amp rating. When a motor stalls it eats up a massive amount of power (sometimes peaking at 90+amps for a normal battery-powered drill for instance). The motor used in that one most likely won't exceed 2-3 amps when stalled.
However, a high speed, high power unit using a blender motor requires more experience and skill to design properly and still be safe to use.

hey /diy/, turns out my housemates are nosey fucks and like to go through my stuff while i'm not home. my door can't even be locked from outside.
thing is, my door handle seems to be fatter than any handle i've seen that has a proper lock, though admittedly i haven't exhausted my search quite yet.
the question is, is it possible to change the handle to one with a proper lock without having to saw the wood or leave open gaps at the sides? how likely is it to find one with the same size?
