Ramp thread.

>Are there any ways to get materials cheaply?
I've thought about going to a construction site at like 3am and taking some of the wood they leave laying around. But that's obscenely shady and I'm not certain the potential repercussions would be worth the potential benefits.

>How to warp wood to align to a curved ramp frame?
I've heard of people using pools, dipping plywood in the water and bending them but this sounds horribly inexact and I want a quality product from my efforts. This is also something that is hard for me to articulate in the form of a search query so my Google searches have been unfruitful.

>Any general construction/woodworking tips?
I have some experience nailing shit together haphazardly, but nothing rigorous or high-stakes. I would like to keep safety and durability in mind. Yes, I already know to measure twice, cut once, etc.

Anyone have any ramp building experience?

Yeah that's what I was getting at.

Go to a construction site, where they dig water pipes, heating or sewers. Ask for the manager, and then ask for used materials.

They often use plywood to prevent soil from collapsing down in to the trench. Some plates might be scrapped even though they are fine.. I have salvaged 20 plates this way, often in 244x122cm

Otherwise ask where they mold concrete.

I making the plans for renovating a bus to live in and I'm thinking of converting the engine to run on compressed Bio gas so I can use my shit and wasted food as fuel. Was wondering if anyone knew anything about the conflicts and safety hazards of installing an anaerobic digestion chamber in place of a septic tank. Also, advice on converting internal combustion engines would be great.

I already know about the compression process and the need for filtering for sulfates, CO2 and particle matter. I more so need to know about dilemmas involved in trying to fit the chamber under the floor and the possible efficiency drawbacks in the size limits
>>
If you want enough gas to cook some food yes but run the engine nope. You would need a lot more shit for that than one person can produce.

do you know of any sources that elaborate on the ratios of waste to produced methane? I'd rather not test this myself

I'll be starting an apprenticeship in a couple weeks with a local union. I hear this is terrible idea due to no work and monthly union dues.
How'd you learn it?

I didn't/haven't learned carpentry but at the construction company I work for they send you to night school for 10 months or some shit to become a carpenter apprentice. Not really sure how the field guys work their way up from apprentice to carpenter foremen though. I think it's the smarts, people skills, and computer skills which separates them from the rest. The carpenter guys that work for the concrete department here generally build the formwork.

I'm just a couple years into the industry though, going to school for construction management. Due to enter the workforce in 2018 full time, hopefully as an assistant superintendent if I'm good enough and if I stay at my company for the next couple summers and transition into a full time position there.

Myself?

I foolishly quit my job. Then, when it got time for me to find a new one my friend told me to just work with him as a laborer for a framing company.

It was that easy.No interview, nothing, just ok, you want a job, well here you go.
>>
>>1017168
If you just wanna learn framing carpentry. it'll probably be a waste of time and money joining a union.

Honestly I'd look around your area and try to find builders that survived the last housing recession. (If you wanna do residential). These are the people that have smarts about them and usually won't lay you off in 3 years cause work dried up and they ended up spending their nest egg.

I became a finish carpenter with no prior experience. I just happened upon it after losing my previous job.

Also generally carpenters don't make shit. So if you wanna have a certain lifestyle you might wanna think about other options after you secured a job.

im a newfag when it comes to electronics, and im a bit scared of li-ion cells, so i thoughtvid come and see if i was doing this right.
ive had an old laptop battery lying around and one of those cheap usb battery banks, so i decided to expand it a little. i plan on wiring up all of the batteries in paralell and using them as one cell with the charging circuit. am i going to blow anything up?
19 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
forgot to mention. i'm charging all of the cells individually before wiring them up together, so that theyre all balanced.
>>
>>1013664
Your batteries are going to die fast. It's generally bad practice to wire batteries in parallel. You never see any battery-powered electronics with this kind of arrangement.
>>
Cell load balancing is the biggest challenge. I wouldn't use old cells that are likely no longer chemically identical.

Look up info on electric bike forums. Those dudes are pro at building balanced packs, without as much risk as venting with flame.

/blacksmithing general/ - cant get this damn coal to light edition

Got inspired by the old thread, finally got my setup and spent a wonderful 2 hours learning how hard coal is to light. then right as it started burning good I turned on my hair dryer and burned it out in 3 minuets.

anyways, lets have another thread so newbies like me can learn the basics.

>>
Start with a real fire in your coal pit. IE, sticks and shit. Kindling level, 1/4 inch around (or 1cm for the luckies that aren't stuck with a centuries old defective system of measurement). Put a few coal pieces on top of it. Let it burn down, slowly scooping more coal into the fire from the edges of your pit. Coal will smother itself if you try to light it too fast, since the tar ooze will make it form into huge masses with no airflow. When you add new coal, add it to the edge of your fire to let it start burning down, and move it to the center only when the tar is burned away.

Yes, it takes forever. There's a reason people use propane.
>>
>>1003876
Also, dont use a hairdryer. The air probably blows too fast and blows too much of the heat away, and it also makes your fire oxygen-rich so you metal corrodes faster in the fire. You want a large vollume of air moving at a slow speed.

If you can make your own charcoal and build a small oven out of fire bricks that works really well. You have great control over the heat. I've tried all kinds of fuels and i greatly prefer it, especially for smaller pieces and knives.
>>
>>1003900
Yeah, this is the second hair dryer that I burnt out trying this. Gonna call it quits until I can save up for a real blower to put in, because my /diy/ attempts at making one have all been less than successful and the idea of coals flying at me at 230mph keeps me from sacrificing an old leaf blower. I'm also going to look into building a new forge, currently it ends up choking itself out with ash and the only way I can get air into it is through a 1/2" piece of pipe.

Figure if I rebuild it with a bigger pipe I will be able put a T in and let it act as an ash trap as well.

So I managed to get my hands on a greenhouse, 8x6 foot, but I need somewhere to put it. Ive got some paving slabs, so I dug out some turf and put in some boards to give me a border. I've marked out my levels and tried to get the ground as even as possible using a fork and a rake. I've got some sharp sand and concrete and now I need asvice on what to do next.

Can I get it even enough with basic tools? How do I mix the sharp sand and concrete? Can it be done by hand? Is it a one man job?

you probably dont even need concrete, just put it directly on top of the sand and gravel

Hey /diy/

I just got this old compressor from my grandfather, his neighbor just passed away and his family gave all of his tools to his friends.

Sanborn model # 34B50

Either way, I looked up the model and every picture I see of this compressor has a single-head pump, which leads me to believe someone along the way put this dual-head pump on it.

My issue:

It only reaches 60 psi, I think there's a leak somewhere, there's a component on top of the pump and I'm not sure what to call it, does anyone know the name of this piece? There are 2 ports on the pump which are missing tubing/hoses and I was wondering if that's the issue.

Thanks as always

Also, as a side note, I think the regulator knob is stuck, the square portion of the knob is missing and I can't get it to turn with a pair of pliers, would that limit the pressure on the gauge?

Not sure if this is the right board:

Backyard was overgrown so I went out to mow, ended up hitting the TV cable. It was wrapped around the blades something awful but nothing broken, just exposed copper now. I continued mowing but it had a different sound. Suddenly, there was an unearthly screenching sound and I turned it off. Now the cord will barely pull and, of course, I'm hesitant to try starting it again.

Suggestions?

Good idea for conserving power in your house. My problem is that this unit works in 110v and my shitty country has current in 220v... any ideas?

It's a switchable power strip which is nothing special. Ask at your local hardware store or shop online.

Search "european 220 volt power strip". I just did and got plenty of hits.

Be glad you have 220, and if you also have three-phase be extra happy. Legacy US low voltage is a hangover from early post-and-bead wiring systems.

- is maybe more what hes looking for - eg, switch off the TV? rest standby devices switch off automatically, also, usually one socket for permanent power. That (link) is Belkin (as suggested), but, theres millions of them search 'standby power saver extension strip' or something.

Just moved into this place, found roach turds in a couple of the kitchen drawers. How do I sanitize them? Pic related is what I'm working with here.

Bleach, bleach, and maybe some bleach.
Get a empty spray bottle if you can and mix up a good dilution to fill it with. Spray all of that shit down and let it sit for 15mins, then wipe down. If the smell bugs you get a bottle of whatever generic cleaner you can find for the cheapest (that the smell of doesn't bug you) and use that afterwards.
>>
>>1019265
Just wipe it down with a wet rag? Also, the textured bottom interior of the drawers look like they would shred anything I used to wipe them with.
>>
>>1019269
>Just wipe it down with a wet rag?
use a mix that is 95% water and the rest bleach.

Not wanting bug droppings everywhere is normal, but bacteria doesn't really do much of anything unless it is placed into liquid water.
So, ya know,,,, kitchen utensils sitting in a dry drawer aren't going to 'grow' anything.

Read up on the NZ scene. Its legal there provided you comply with the regulations. There is also a lot in the UK but it isn't legal there.

The Muh FCC schils will be here soon because they think america = the world but just remember it IS legal in some countries.

There aren't many of those. And it isn't a pirate radio station if it is legal.

Hey there /DIY/. I'm trying to add an aux video cable to my 09 acura TSX, although I don't think the details are too important in this case. The display is obviously component or composite, you can tell just by looking at it. I want to go in there and add an aux video cable connector, but I'm not quite sure if it's the best idea- I've found some very dated pinouts for older years, but I'm not sure if they're current. Does the display likely use some sort of proprietary signal, or would it use something standard like component or composite? Does anyone know of anywhere to find the modern current pinouts, or how to check if the signal is/isn't standard?

Also, does anybody know of any resources for complete trim removal? I've removed the entirety of the controls on the center console (Radio, air, etc) but I can't seem to progress it up to the screen, which is recessed and covered with a shield.
