I'm in a similar boat. I'm also 24 and trying to figure out exactly what instruments to use to retire at ~45.

I figure that at the very least maxing a Roth is smart, since you can withdraw the contributions anytime you need to without penalty.

You can always withdraw your contributions penalty free out of a Roth IRA. You can roll over a 401k or Traditional IRA into a Roth IRA withdraw penalty free after 5 years. Furthermore, most of the time you'll be ahead even if you have to pay the penalty because of the tax free growth. You are really stupid if you put money into taxable accounts before your 401k, IRA, and HSA.

I plan to retire around 45. The best strategy I've worked out at this point is to pour money first into a tax free account, secondly a tax deferred account, and lastly a taxable account.
I'm in Canada so my account offerings will be a bit different. But for research or any Canadians looking the accounts are TFSA, RSP, and IA respectively.
