Anyone have advice for a young professional?
I'm not making much to begin with and I need a rental car to travel but hopefully without breaking the bank

Better luck just buying a decent beater car for a couple grand honestly. Rentals aren't cheap even without considering your age.
Forgot this when I had to redo the post: I'll only need this for a couple weeks out of the year
I'm worried I'll just have a beater car that I cant do anything with once this job is finished

In that case I would check out your local dealership. Most offer some sort of business rentals and I'm fairly sure the charges are a bit cheaper than ones you would get through a typical rental agency.
car sharing like car2go or zipcar
should be enough to get you by if you have locations in your area
Uber
>under 25 surcharge
Is this a real thing that people actually pay? Maybe just don't look like an unemployed douchebag when you go to pick up the car. I've always had this surcharge waived for both business and personal rentals.

in the US most rental places can't rent a car to anyone under 25. afaik it's not law, just an insurance requirement.
you also have to have a credit care with something like a grand in credit to rent a car. Or, you know, a thousand dollar cash deposit I guess.

>insurance requirement
It's just a way to take advantage of the naive. I'm an American and I've rented plenty of cars in the US and I've never paid the under 25 surcharge.
Also how hard is it to let them swipe a card that can authorize (but not actually charge) $1000?

I'm not saying it's hard, but then I'm 44 years old and have over a $100k in available credit so it's not really a concern for me.
I was never allowed to rent a car before I was 25 though, or without a credit card.
