I need help with my rescue dog. He is satanic on walks, and I need a way to exhaust him before taking him on walks so he is more chill and collected. But he doesn't want to do anything.
>Try to play fetch
>Chases the ball down once. Gets it. Runs away to chew on the ball. Take the ball. He stops caring and sniffs.
>Try to play flirt pole
>Catches it once. Chews on it. Get him to drop it with a treat. Try to play again, doesn't care.
>Try to play tug of war
>Fucks off with the toy as soon as he gets it to chew on it
What do? I really need a way to get him to burn energy before going on a leashed walk.
Why did you get a dog if you don't know how to handle one?
>>2245155
not everyone grows up with a dog. at least he rescued one instead of insisting on a shiba puppy as his first dog like some of the assholes here.
have him run on a leash while you ride your bike, you won't exhaust yourself that way.
don't go too fast.
Redpill me on hedgehogs, /an/. Are they worth the price and the short lifespan?
They don't like you
>>2245111
Love them and they will be worth the price.
.-.
>>2245119
Pretty much this.
Also, they cost quite a lot to begin with (price of hedgehog, habitat, accessories, food, first vet visits) but if they're relatively healthy then in the long run they're pretty low maintenance. I spend about two dollars on new mealworms every few weeks, a dollar on baby food every week, and $20 on new cat food every 3 months. They're on fleece so there's no continual cost of bedding. Mine are pretty healthy, so no crazy vet bills, just the occasional check up. I MIGHT spend $50/month on them, but realistically it's about 10/month that I actually have to spend for their maintenance, feeding and care. the other 40 is just fluff.
As far as I'm aware, hedgehogs aren't *as* social as other small mammals like rats, but they can become attached to you. I have two, and one of them is quite attached to me and thoroughly enjoys human affection/attention. The other prefers to do her own thing. Personality is a mixed bag, just like with many other animals that can be kept as pets.
fwiw I've had mine for 4 & 5 years, soon to turn 5&6 with no obvious signs of slowing down other than a little tooth loss/erosion on the oldest one. I never thought they were "not worth it", even though their shit smells pretty bad sometimes, or they poop outside the bars of their cage.
Is it just me or are cows adorable?
I want to hug each and every one I see
before dining on their flesh and drinking their titty juices.
Cows are livestock and historically a highly desirable animal like horses and dogs. If you have a few cows, a dog, and a horse you're set to raise a whole family. Milk is very high in protein, a new born calf is very valuable, and a cow is an asset.
Are they psychoactive maybe?
no.
only one way to find out

Anyone know where I can get live edible algae plants? I mean I know some aquarium algae is edible but I want to get stuff like a small kelp species
>>2243781
You can have some of the algae in my tank, I can figure out how to get rid of the stuff!
What kind of plants are these? I found them growing along the walls of a damp gully.

Squirrels, /an/.
Let's face it - Everyone loves them (except for maybe bird-lovers whose feeders keep getting pilfered).
Why haven't we tried to domesticate them yet?
They seem incredibly intelligent for rodents, at least rat-tier. They're certainly not endangered, they're native to almost every temperate climate on Earth, and from what I know, they don't harbor any human-transmittable diseases or post any threat to us or other species.
Some Grey Squirrels can grow to be almost as big as a small cat. And speaking of cats, there have been cases of domesticated mother cats "adopting" young squirrels, nursing them and everything, which then grow to behave much like cats, even so far as purring when a cat would.
Would it be a viable option to use surrogate cat mothers to breed a species of domesticated squirrels? It may even lead to more "low-energy" squirrels that don't need to constantly burn energy and fly all other place when they're not busy.
There's a squirrel I call fatso who meets me outside every morning and when I get home from work. I give him some acorns and walnuts. He's very fat. I will miss him when he dies.
for the same reason sugar gliders are shit pets.
because they are mean, and usually don't take kindly to humans directly.
>they don't harbor any human-transmittable diseases or post any threat to us or other species
literally not true
I'm pretty sure my two kittens are in heat or on the verge. Actually I'm not 100% sure, but the one keeps raising her ass up toward me when I pet her, which is weird. Plus they're almost six months old. I haven't witnessed them spraying, but they're very nocturnal and get into all manner of shit while I'm asleep, so who knows. They do seem to be a bit more affectionate than they usually are, but I can't be sure that's just not them becoming more social. Whatever the case, they seem old enough to be spayed.
The vet quoted me ~$500/cat for spaying. That shit sounds stupid. Especially considering I already got raped on getting them all of their tests/shots (probably about $800 already). If I had only one cat, maybe I'd go that route. However, I believe the animal protective league will spay them for about $100/cat.
Are there any downsides to going the cheap route? I guess my fear is that they'll be more likely to fuck up. But the difference between $1000 and $200 is pretty significant.
Anyone gotten a low-cost spay/neuter? Did everything go well? Did anything go poorly?
>I haven't witnessed them spraying
if you can't smell whether they've sprayed your house must fucking reek.
get yourself together.
fuck ups happen at every price point. all my spay/neuters have been low cost- I'd never spend more than $100 on first year shots and the surgery.
keep in mind the low cost places do tons of these every single day.
>>2243366
I've never had kittens so I don't know what it smells like one way or the other.
This is Smudge, my new 10 week old Cav
He's a little bit special, but I love him regardless.

>why does he make retarded noises to get my attention

Doggo already has done the latter LOL
My faggot cat only eats shit kibble. I have spent lots of money trying to get her healthy, high-end cat food for senior cats and she won't touch it. If I give her wet food she eats the gravy and leaves the rest. She won't even eat actual meat. She likes cheese and shit kibble filled with grains which I know cats don't need.
What the fuck why
Have you introduced the new foods correctly cats are fuzzy you cant just serve them a whole plate u gotta do it slowly also when it comes to wet food they might not like d texture
>>2243022
How? Mix the foods?
She sat in front of a full bowl of good stuff all day meowing that she wanted to be fed and I ended up having to go out and buy shit kibble.
dont fill up the food bowl. let the fucker go hungry for a bit and then put out wet food
ITT: Post a mythical creature you think would make a viable, reasonable pet.
/an/ explains why it would be hugely irresponsible to own one.
I'll start with the Jackalope. I think it'd be a fine pet.
Obviously a dragon. Despite that they would quickly become the pitbull of the fantasy animal world. You'll have thousands of people going on and on about how it's about how they're raised. And not the fact that they could destroy entire cities if they get bored. It would be cool as shit to own a dragon though.
>>2242513
Oh sure jackalopes are cute and cool... Until they jump up to greet you and stab your throat. Don't get me started on people who cut the horns off. What's even the point after that?
>>2242516
>reasonable pet animal
>dragon
Try again. That shit would ne outlawed and only owned in special facilities at best for wildly obvious reasons.
Can we have a general dog thread? My oldest dog (pic related) is getting put down today, so I feel like a dog thread is appropriate.

Don't listen to this mongoloid, op. It's an absolute shit decision to have to make but the pups QoL has to be paramount.
Is the pup old, feeble, and clearly in physical distress? Then you're showing mercy, op, never doubt that.
>>2239452
"Die naturally" means out in the elements, usually killed by a predator or -if it finds a place to hole up where no predator can reach it- of thirst. How is that a good way to die?
