/herp/ reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount
/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic
>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal
Love seeing these at my ranch
Well /herp/?

>there are human beings who will spend the entirety of their existence on this god forsaken earth without ever once having known the pure love and loyalty of a golden retriever
sad!
I love Golden Retrievers but most dogs offer the same pure love and loyalty desu
My pitbull Brutus is as loyal and loving as any Golden

What is the ultimate apex predator, /an/ ?
I'm voting either predatory dinosaurs or these fucking demons.
Tibetan Mastiff is APEX

I was thinking maybe this guy.
Orcas are basically flagships from Monster Hunter. Strong, resilient, fast and smart while still having a niche which they completely dominate.
On land I'd have to go with pic related. Like what could possibly fight this thing and win?
Are rabbits good pets?
Ya they are surprisingly good pets. Litter train it and make sure there aren't any cords on the ground that it can chew.

What's a good resource for a first time owner?
Bumping out of interest. Can you keep them happy even if you're away a lot?
What are some higher quality dry dog foods that are easier to chew? My dog does well on Acana but its a pretty dense kibble and she's having her teeth worked on soon.
Alternatively, is there any reason I shouldn't just switch her to a wet food for the time being until she's healed and can go back to the Acana?
Bonus points for low glycemic carb sources and NO lamb (gives her terrible gas).
Just put some water in her kibble. Let it sit till its slightly soft.

>is there any reason I shouldn't just switch her to a wet food for the time being until
It may be bad for her teeth, especially if she already has some problems with them.

Isn't Acana Blue Grass the softer to chew, easier on the stomach variant?

Ask a guy who just domesticated almost-gone-feral Maine Coon, after 4 weeks of trying to befriend her, anything :)
>feral Maine Coon
it's just a large mutt.

First foto than I managed to snap of her, earlier she just ran off as soon as she saw me

There's a severe lack of nature on the animals and nature board. I'm bored, so here's some stuff primarily from western CO and eastern UT.
Which animals have free will, and which are simply the products of their genetics and conditioning?
>>2240760
No animal really has free will, not even humans.
>...the current work is in broad agreement with a general trend in neuroscience of volition: although we may experience that our conscious decisions and thoughts cause our actions, these experiences are in fact based on readouts of brain activity in a network of brain areas that control voluntary action...It is clearly wrong to think of [feeling of willing something] as a prior intention, located at the very earliest moment of decision in an extended action chain. Rather, W seems to mark an intention-in-action, quite closely linked to action execution.

doggos, but their only free will is to make people happy
pic related, it is my pit bull
Define free will.
A quick question but are bettas better in large tanks or smaller tank i will be upgrading to a larger tank soon and i will be left with a 32lt tank i wanna use i was thinking of keeping a betta.
I read around that bettas are happier in small tanks and viceversa so what is /an/ opinion or should i get other type of fish.
>>2240674
32l is not that small and should be fine for a betta. Some people keep them in 20l or less - Bettas in general don't mind, as long as it is not too cramped, since they are very hardy. That being said, of course betta can thrive in bigger tanks. Keep in mind that bigger tanks bring the benefit of a higher water volume, thus making more stable water parameters and having a bigger buffering capacity.
>>2240674
>I read around that bettas are happier in small tanks
Jesus christ how horrifying
The average betta splendid territory can be almost 3 square metres during monsoon season. but your current size is enough to keep one happy & healthy.
>>2240674
Sounds fine. Mines in a 3ft long tank and is very happy
What do you do for your animals when it's their birthday/a holiday? Meat cake? Treats? Nothing?
I also want to do something special for my cat's birthday, but I don't want to give him too much to eat, but I still want to do something nice. Any ideas?
For my pets I usually get them a treat or two and splurge on higher quality things they have been needing like beds, toys, and other supplies. Might even make them some homemade treats or a meal if I have time, and just take the day to in general make them feel special and appreciated. Nothing too fancy, but it makes us both feel good even if they cant understand the reasoning behind it.
For my dogs, a special walk. Maybe a new toy. A bag of treats they don't normally get.
Cats, nothing. We only know roughly what month they were born, not what day, so we never really celebrate birthdays. They get toys at Christmas though.
a live mouse
Hey /an/. So I've got this predicament. This morning my parents found this bird under a car. It's in a cage right now. I can pick it up without it biting me, and it almost seems fine until I let it go, and then it just flops over and stays there, almost paralyzed. He kinda just flops around in his cage when he moves, which is rare. What do?
In the pic it looks like I'm squeezing him. Don't worry, I'm picking him up gently from the top.
Take it to the vet
Another pic of the bird.
>>2240528
My parents don't care enough to take it to the vet, but they want to to survive.
Find a local wildlife rehab place and drop it off there. It won't cost you anything, and it pretty much definitely will die otherwise.

Why is society so okay with eating pigs when they're so intelligent? People are appalled by eating Dolphins, Dogs or Apes, yet when you bring up that pigs are smart and social as well, they'll go "but they taste so good!"!
>>2240500
>"but they taste so good!"
Well, I mean, they do.
>>2240500
Pigs are far easier to farm than those other intelligent examples. As long as they're killed humanely it's not so bad.
Now what's really terrible in any modern society is halal butchering - complete lack of stunning, and prolonged slitting of the throat for utterly vile religious reasons (so the animal dies in ultimate fear and submission to 'Allah'). That's the sort of shit we should be banning (though it doesn't apply to pigs I guess).
do apes even taste good? i've never heard of anyone eating apes.
people are appalled about eating dogs and dolphins because they're cute, not because they're intelligent.
