Some friends and I are planning to run a Castlevania/Darksouls/Borne themed tabletop RPG. We were planning to use DnD 3.5 with Ravenloft, but I'm posting here to get some other opinions. Most of us have limited tabletop experience, having played a bit of 3.5 previously. Anybody know a system that might work better for this gothic horror game?

>>
Eh, 3.5 is fine. You could use the whole "casters OP" to emphasize the themes of your source material.

Go OSR, something 1e or BECMI based maybe. It'll be fairly familiar since it's just Old D&D but you won't have as much "Everyone is a goddamn superhero... except for the Fighter, who is the only one with any actual chance of dying" problem.
>>
A friend of mine from school ran a Dark Souls game that used Dread. It was a good way to represent how often you get worked.

In order to gain all the various powers, attributes and items in my possession I've bartered away my soul, mind, linniage and even have to harvest a bottle of my own blood every week. to damn near everyone in creation willing to make contracts I've mangeged to get something from.

I'll probably stick around for a fair few centuries, given all the boons I've amassed, but when I do eventually croak, everyone is gonna come looking for my soul. Have I doomed the world to some kind of divine war?

Nah, they'll just split custody of your soul kind of like how some divorced parents handle their kids.

Nah. When all these dozen entities come to take your soul they will merge into one laughing figure. Figure reveals that it was he Devil who traded your evil for wordly power under different masks. He found in you infinite pettiness, evil and spiritual filth for which you will suffer like no other man did. You will make a decent substitute for him while he goes on hellish vacation.

>I too like to play skyrim

Given how renown you are, there most certainly will be a divine fight. But what kind of being gives you power in exchange for your soul when you already owe your only soul to a much powerful being?

How do you make a setting in the style of Magic the Gathering? Is it as simple as taking five or so color aspects and then building factions and races to match each one? There are some YouTube videos I'll be watching, looks like they do panels at PAX, but I don't really into MTG in general so I'd appreciate some design tips and nuances from people more experienced in it.

It's going to be for D&D 5e, so I'll be reading the Planeshift supplements as well.

>>
What do you mean? Is it planes or other dimensions like that?
>>
I mean, the colors really are just closer to personality types. Everyone is technically able to use all colors but the stronger character traits dictate your kind of magic you can do. Honorable knight does white magic. Nerd and curious Rogue wizard will do blue. A resourceful and practical person may act with black magic since it's the least merciful.

If you want factions then look into Ravnica, Alara, or Tarkir.

So, this thread is for getting advice for DMs from other DMs, to hopefully improve their games. System doesn't matter for this. I'll be the sacrificial lamb to start us off.

I recently booted a problematic player, who had been screwing up our tabletop sessions for years in different degrees, no matter the system. Definitely the right call, like /tg/ usually recommends. However we're sort of spinning our wheels now, we had new players come in and it takes them time to get set up, but we haven't moved on much with the people who have been waiting for this opportunity, and people seem interested in the game but bored with the new people.

Should I forge ahead and not keep the training wheels on for the new people, or do I keep focusing on the players who put up with that bad player's shit to give them a good game, even if the new people might feel a little left out? Is there a better third option?

How do you handle the party being split up? I'm asking more in terms of meta knowledge given. Like for example if one player goes off on his own and ends up getting kidnapped. Do you let all the players know or do you attempt to keep it hidden somehow?

Personally, I'm inclined to pull the player aside when they go off on their own to play out what happens solo, but I feel like this slows the game down and bores the other players. Similarly the other player won't be allowed to interact with the players until their characters have all been reunited. I just believe this will make things boring for people though, but at the same time meta knowledge may impact decisions.
>>
>>55097617
Really depends on the group and the setting. Some groups play well rrgardless of above game factors so saying things aloud just gets them invested too. Setting is really the big one in my eyes, since if your in one that has cell phones or similar its gonna be hard for player to resist the urge of just calling that character to gain the knowledge right away. I see no problem with keeping it hidden either way, so long as you can juggle between groups so people dont get bored.
>>
>>55097302
Well, the biggest advice is always to forget what you want to write, because you're not even a writer, the group is the writer. Doing this alone means you'll probably not create the kind of story where people complain over railroads...

Secondly, the best railroad is the one you create and just leave there, turned off. If the PCs decide to take it, they must then go in and turn it on and get it running back up again all on their own.

And I've recently gotten real good results by adding random 1d100 rolls every single time I can't make up my mind or I'm not satisfied with what would be the "expected" result. So, PCs just barge in somewhere, make a mess and THEN they think about cameras? d100, and so they get that tiny chance of there not being cameras to begin with. PC needs something that they don't normally carry with them? Well, a d100>50 and there it is, they packed it after all. It's gotten to the point that some of my players call for d100 rolls from time to time and it works really well.

As a DM, I just use these d100s to decide how favorably off-scene stuff is resolving, etc. It's fun in that it grows out all on it's own.

I'll start:

>Playing Khans-Theros Standard running a semi-janky whelming wave control deck
>Round one, go up against what seems like a fairly new player, about 15 years old
>He pulls out a 200 card deck
>Kind of amused but don't say anything
>He doesn't play anything too soon, I just start anticipating and fueling delve
>He drops Laboratory Maniac
>"Oh, um, dude, that's not really in standard"
>He asks me what that is
>Tell him cards rotate, and that he should probably go talk to a judge
>Most of his deck is from Innistrad or earlier
>He gets up to talk to a judge
>After a few minutes, this guy starts giving me shit from the next table over
>"Wow dude, that was really uncool"
>"Yeah, he just wanted to play the game, and you wouldn't let him"
>"It's FNM dude, who cares"
>Ask him what the fuck I was supposed to do
>He keeps trying to give me shit until the kid gets back
>He has a mono-white deck that's standard legal
>I didn't really care about getting the win at just an FNM, but I beat him easily
>The guy keeps giving me shit after the kid gets up to leave
>Next round, I get paired up with the guy from the other table
>He's a spike with a 100% competitive netdeck
>He's obviously extremely salty, and is barely saying anything
>Goes "Okay" sarcastically every time I counter or kill something
>Get him game 1 with Silumgar, the Drifting Death
>In the middle of game 2, his gf comes over and he wins
>heart is fucking pounding game 3, it's really close
>He drops thunderbreak regent and another creature
>Whelming Wave him
>Replays his hand, on my turn I hit him with the wave
>Does it again, at EOT I anticipate and hit him with another wave
>Use my fourth wave after his next turn
>Eventually get there with Silumgar
>He angrily picks up his cards, leaves the store with his gf, and hasn't been seen there in years

Currently in my 5e party one of my players has pledged themselves to 2 gods that are imprisoned in 1 body. One of the gods is lawful evil grim reaper styled dude, the other is a chaotic good mother nature life-giver god.

I'd guess all the feudal lords who don't trust all the military power of the land in the hands of a single other individual.
>>
>>55094910
Well, the initial reason the European aristocracy militarized was so they could keep their own peasants in check during the early years after the fall of Rome when everything went to shit and kings had no real power to maintain law and order beyond the vicinity of their capitals. To avoid the rise of knights, you'd have to have a culture where the transition from classical empire to feudalism went more smoothly, without that period of anarchy and isolation.

Italy would be a fairly good example, where things were already developed enough before the Roman empire collapsed that city states could maintain relative order in the countryside as opposed to things reverting to the castle-and-village feudalism of medieval France, Britain, and Germany.
