Since last thread sold me on summoning her, what jumps would Jalter like visiting?

Cute.
What do you think of Hexes, Square Grids, Theater of the Mind and Absolute Distances in combat? Which ones do you think fit a specific gameplay? What are their advantages and disadvantages?
Pic unrelated.
If there's anything in the rules at all related to distance and position in combat, something to look at will always save a great deal of time spent asking for clarification.
Hexes and squares are basically the same in play. I personally like them, assuming it's for systems that actually care about relatively precise positioning, flanking, cover etc., it's kind of a waste otherwise. I like this style of play.
ToM works when there's less emphasis put on that. Not every game has to be a combat tactics simulator, and sometimes it's okay to take it easy. As long as you don't merely try to pretend your game doesn't need a grid because that makes it more of a roleplaying game somehow, it's cool.
What's Absolute Distance? Some sort of inbetween abstracted method?
Hexes are supreme.

Okay so, new player question again. lord of war, crown of conquest, formations... where are all these defined? I haven't seen these terms anywhere before and I've been digging through the GHB17 I just got. Sigmar seems to pop out tons of little random things that seem important and I have a lot of trouble finding documentation on them.
Am I missing some other important book? I got the 4 page rules and the GHB but there's still lots that I apparently dont have
Been thinking about making a Death army. Don't currently play AoS but I really like the aesthetic of Skeletons and Ghosts - less so into zombies and vampires. Is this a good idea Y/N?

Also any good secret tech for mill aside from the Leveller/fractured identity thing
Board control+combo such as UGx decks that amass resources while keeping my battlefield down. I'm playing tajic. ;-;
In modern D&D and its derivatives, do your actual ability scores even matter? Or is it just the bonus that you should be worried about?

In 3.x and 4e it matters for qualifying for feats. Quite a few feats require odd numbered ability scores to get.

Basically, in the Abyss we have-
-Proxy Great Old Ones trying to destroy the universe to me amoral "Above and beyond thou" Cosmic Horrors once more
-Muderhobo punchmeat monsters
-Demons who are actually Demons and just want to fuck with everyone, and are closer to Demons in settings where there's one for every bad thing you do made manifest, and there's a bit of racial divide here with the others. Basically, these cunts are the most sociable and the ones would would totally support making the world like the one we live in right now
The nine is basically a pyramid scheme built on lies and deceit to the point where they're really weak by comparison and are in effect, the most unoptimized shit-tier backwater business in the universe, with so many erroneous flaws, that it's a miracle that a cabal of PCs wizards have not fucked them over with their shit statistics and lack of developmental progress towards creating an optimized hell.
They're scared of the original denizens, they infgiht too much, their boss is just out to kill everyone anyway so it doesn't matter, they're not even functional as outsiders due to having physical matter in their beings central to their own hierachy of evolution propagandized as a triumph over chaos, when it really is the cosmic equivalent of a crayon scribble drawing, and they don't even pool their souls, each Archdevil does not pay their dues worth for shit, and Mephistopheles Hellfire is going to bankrupt him, it is literally THAT fucking useless.
Meanwhile, the Abyss has Vilefire which makes people it hits evil, meaning more profit opposed to the silly shit Mephy is up to. And if they wanted AC ignoring attacks, then just mass produce their erinyes Razorwing blades to ruin anyone's day.
This is incredibly Apt and powerful, as AC ignoring weapons are the shit that lets PC clerics solo beat the shit out of IUZ in the temple of Elemental evil, that is how fucking broken AC ignoring weapons are.
>>55090887
Philosophy in the Nine amounts to "Imagine your working the shittiest office Job ever, where everyone is a screaming idiot, untrustworthy backstabbing cunt, and knows nothing of proper economics, where everyone just berates one another and is a drain on overall company productivity and performance".

Is there a better sci-fi OSR than SWN with bits of classic traveller, or vice versa?
How would you run a Harry Potter campaign /tg/?
IDK about running, but the chargen sounds like Burning Wheel.
>>55088464
first rule is noone gets to have a shotgun
Why would I even want to run anything based on one of the dullest franchises in the history of movie franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.
>a-at least the books were good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

What would an interesting campaign for a low super powered high school setting where the PCs have to keep their powers a secret?
I just gotta say that naming the edgy loner character "Warren Peace" was painfully groan-inducing.
Sup /tg/,
Long time lurker, beginner DM. I'm running my players through Curse of Strahd as my first campaign, as I absolutley adore the setting. My interpretation of Strahd is sort of a Hannibal Lecter type and as such I'm looking for inspiration on ways to fuck with my players. So what are your most memorable ways Strahd has messed with you or you as the DM messed with your players?
Also Ravenloft general I guess
>>55087836
Get the fuck out you filthy ravenshit secondary and don't ever return.
What interesting, unusual magic systems have you seen in games that you liked?
Pretty much all of the ridiculous number of magic systems in Ars Magica. Giving yourself powers through singing, animating objects and empowering them through ward magic, summoning djinn and making bargains with them in return for having them empower your magic, burning magical incense to command things to move around; there's a lot of interesting stuff.
>>55088209
The one thing that pissed me off about the Folk Witches from Hedge Magic was the lack of an inherent divination type art (except for fucking Dowsing, which is like the retarded little brother of divination). I mean, seriously? That's like the one thing folk witches did 99% of the time for rural communities.
I also kinda wish there was a bit more on the goetic predecessors of elementalists (who supposedly used a similar system, but dealt with ghosts as well as elementals). Canonically they're all dead, but that didn't stop other dead traditions from appearing in some books.
>>55088209
Despite being a huge fan of Mage, I've never been able to really penetrate AM (mainly due to knowing I'll never find a group interested in playing it). Are these all basic reskinnings of the Word system (or whatever it's called), or do non-hermetic casters all have different magical subsystems?
Stat me, /tg/.
I don't know man. What system? In general though, high int but pretty bad wis. There a stat for being batshit?
