Pledging to a lawful evil dog or a chaotic good dog does not mean you need share their alignment. The person could be just trying to keep both in check. Otherwise, to worship both something that is evil death-based while worshiping good life-based would be schizophrenic. One cannot side genuinely with evil and still "worship" good. The reverse too.

Take away good and evil and you can split the two in balance, as >>55100690 illustrates, but pure evil and pure good cannot be compromised on, otherwise they do not truly uphold them.

My fear is that if played like they are schizo, or that they pick both gods paths with equal frequency, or if they play it like they are bullied by the more vocal one at the time, their characters actions will be unpredictable. That is bad for the party, as they cannot be trusted or relied upon in a game which forces the PCs to be together, often working towards the same goal.

I can't see this working out well as long as good and evil are involved.

Has an unironically good point, though. You could fluff both gods as just loving their work to an unhealthy degree. Death god loves killing people, even if they could live a while longer, life god loves creating life, even cancer or invasive species. The paladin loves bringing death as much as he loves bringing life.

They do, but no one worships the Sovereign Host (Good to Neutral) and the Dark Six (Evil, and that one Chaotic Neutral guy) at the same time. Certain ideals can't be reconciled.

Seconded. What's the point to an evil death god? The reaper should be neutral, or only good people would die. You can't even do the strictly lawful thing if you've also aligned yourself with life and life is chaotic.

Really, by creating these two gods and giving them polar opposite alignments, the GM has created a setting which states to the player that there is no common ground between life and death. And then the paladin player said "I DO BOTH LOL".

There are certain rules that should be upheld no matter what the cost. The possible hypocrisy is worth it. A hard god that punishes murderers, racists, and blasphemers specifically and ruthlessly.

In all other things, do the best you can and do all the good you can. Is that thief being beat? Is that punishment proportionate? Is killing him over bread going to make the world a better place.

Set up specific laws (real life example being murder) and a couple of situations up for interpretation (like how not speeding while everyone else is speeding might cause more accidents than just driving like everyone else).
