traveller in a nutshell.jpg
20KB, 400x533px
Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1975. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.
Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.

New stuff in the archives:

Spica Publishing "Outer Veil" has its own folder in MGT1's Other Settings now, and has most of the adventure, but is still missing parts 3 and 7, and nothing after 9.

There's now a character sheet for Cepheus Engine
We've also got Mindjammer for MGT2.
(I know there's some other new MGT2 scans out there, but I couldn't find any when I looked around this morning.)

Contributions are welcome as always.

Things I'm looking for include:

MegaTraveller:
Zhodani and Droyne (Aliens Volume 3)
K'kree and Hivers (Aliens Volume 4)

Mongoose 1e:
Traveller Robots (not Book 9)

Judges Guild books:
JG360 Laser Tank
JG520 Navigator's Starcharts

Challenge Magazine issues 33, 34
Space Gamer issues 9, 10, 11, 12, 80

Houserules PDFs that archive.org didn't have:
Factor career (Sigg Oddra)
Revised Psionics Rules (Omer Golan)

Oops, left out this stuff from IRC:

Cepheus Engine's SRD and Easy Settlements, a sourcebook for setting up and fleshing out cities and stuff.

The 400 ton Donosev Class Survey Scout for GURPS Traveller

And Wreck of the Tereshkova for MGT1's Outer Veil.

What amount of optimization do you accept in games you participate in? How far do you allow your fellow players to go before things start breaking your suspension of disbelief?

I don't play games where optimisation can harm suspension of disbelief.

If you're talking about powergaming and blatant rules exploits, those are shut down as a matter of course, but there's nothing wrong with players wanting their characters to be mechanically competent.

Whatever 'level' the group arrives at tends to be based on the preferences of the players, sticking to whatever the majority are comfortable with. Thankfully the players I know who like optimising aren't assholes, so they'll either tone down their characters in low-op games or help other people properly mechanically represent their characters capabilities in high-op games.

Honestly this. I just houserule out things I dislike from the get-go. Having a flat "no third party" rule usually works wonders.

But then again I mostly run Fate and Savage Worlds, which are designed for GMs with a pick and choose mentality. I know D&D and Pathfinder have a serious problem with players cheesing the supplement bloat. But it's not hard to say "CRB only".

The Watch Kickstarter.jpg

>The Watch is a tabletop roleplaying game set in a "light fantasy" setting known as The Clanlands. It takes place during a dark and horrific war between the now-united ten clans who live there and an invading force, known only as The Shadow.

>The Shadow is a powerful and insidious enemy that is able to enter the minds of its opponents and slowly turn them to its side; twisting them into unnatural foes. For reasons unknown, The Shadow is able to more easily influence the minds of men, and has turned a great deal of the clan's soldiers against itself.

>With most of its fighting force crippled or worse, the clans have joined together and begun enlisting new warriors to defend their homes. Women and non-binary femme people who seem better able to resist The Shadow's hold have been recruited, trained, promoted, and formed into a new order: The Watch.

>In The Watch, you'll play a group of elite soldiers who are called upon time and time again to defend villages, attack The Shadow's forces at key locations, scout the enemy's lines, and much more. Each mission comes with its fair share of costs and compromises and you'll need to navigate them in order to be ready to heed the next call to action.

>It's in these in-between moments where the rules for The Watch focus themselves: What do you do to unwind from the pressure that threatens to pull you down? Who do you spend what little free time you have with, and why? How will you hold off The Shadow's influence so that you can see the end of this war? That's what you'll have to find out for yourself...

Well it's good that in a genre where you're able to literally play anything you feel like, there's finally a game specifically about women and "non binary femme-people" fighting evil men and trying to manage their feelings between missions.

I wonder what the character sheets look like.

We've all seen it. Some people play stereotypical elf rangers. Others play dwarf fighters. Some play some homebrewed special snowflake race/class. So on and so forth.

My question to you, /tg/, is: do you actually judge people for their choice in race/class? If you see a guy playing a human paladin, for example, do you think of him in a certain way? Do you see him differently from the guy who plays a half-orc barbarian?

A player decides the goal for their 5e character is to become a deity.

Is that just an unreasonable goal? What would they have to accomplish in order to achieve that?
24 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>52107327
Depends on scope of game and the specifics of your world. How do your gods work? Have mortals ever become gods before? Do other players have similarly ambitious goals?
>>
>>52107327
Sexual favors for the GM.
>>
>>52107327
My group's rogue wants to steal the mantle of "God of Thieves" from the deity herself, just so he can live longer with his elf waifu.

I have no idea how to even begin planning on that. Luckily they're only level 3.

Making a game. You roll for STR, WIS and CHA (no more stats). Roll under with a d20 to succeed.

You get 1 talent each level. Talents are divided in three groups. Depending which one you get, you also increment the relevant stat by +1

STR

Fighter: you deal +d6 damage with your chosen weapon (you normally do d4-d6-d8 depending on your weapon size)
Tough: you're big and mean, you get +1 armor
Acrobat: you're agile as fuck, you can attempt wuxia jumps and ninja stealth

WIS

Doctor: You can tend the ill, and fetch any kind of chemicals from your bag (roll to see how useful they are). On a miss, something works awkwardly or the patient gets worse
Tech guy: You can repair things; you get a mysterious device. At anytime, say what it does and roll to see how it works. On a miss there are requirements for it to work, or it's not as good as you said
Investigator: Once per day, you can claim that you know a secret about something (ask your GM and he'll tell the truth) or state retroactivelly that you had prepared for a situation (set a trap, asked for help, etc). Roll to see how well you did it.

CHA:

Bard: When you play, you get to say how does a specific person feels, how does your music help somebody or the underlying feeling of a crowd. On a miss, you still get one, but something goes wrong
Witch: When you perform a ritual, you can roll to ask favors to supernatural forces. On a success, they aid you on a task; or you enchant something to enhance it's power. On a miss, there are unwanted consequences or costs.

As you see, I'm lacking a CHA talent for all my system to be mechanically pretty. What should I add?
I'm thinking on Animal Companion, but if I find something better I'll fit it under the equipment section.
Also thought on making like a Mystic Monk ability (spider sense - shadow replication - Kamehameha) but this covers too many feats and they even could be covered by other talents.

Any other ideas?

>>
Seems incredibly generic and basic. What are your design intentions and goals for the system? What are you trying to achieve that other systems which already exist do not?
>>
>>52106922
just some light hearted adventure system. I want something simple for my group; I don't have an specific, prepared setting; but I like to mix fantasy with modern elements (OP's pic). I'll run a mercenary campaign but improvise it depending on the characters my players make. I'm also making a table for backgrounds, and other for monsters; but as far as mechanical rules go, this is all
>>
>>52106922
Also, related to

>What are you trying to achieve that other systems which already exist do not?

I love rules light systems, but I cannot find one that isn't either:
a) pretentious and made solely for the designer's ego, disregarding the fact that other people has to play it
b) optimized for dungeons (or taking unnecesary things from DnD)
c) imperfect for some reason (to my needs, and my humble opinion)

Hi /tg/, /co/mrade here. I've been thinking about trying something new, and the game "Deadlands" immediately caught my eye. I love alt history, wacky cowboys, and ooky spooky magic. I went to the deadlands page to see an order for the gamebook but was met with oodles of add-ons, supplementaries, and other fluff. I'm willing to spend money, but I can't help but feel like I'm bein bamboozled here.

So, my question to you /tg/, have any of you ran a deadlands campaign? would you recommend it? I've played D&D 3.5 and 5.

Thanks!

>>
>>52105622

All you need to play Deadlands is the Savage Worlds CRB and the Deadlands: Reloaded book. Total this is like forty bucks. Cheaper than the 5e PHB.

Deadlands is fun and has the tools to play a lot of different kinds of games. My only real gripe with it is the alt history stuff makes little sense (the CSA dismantling slavery and institutionalized racism just cuz) but that's so easily fixed there's no real reason complaining about it.
>>
>>52105622
Deadlands is far and away the game my group has most enjoyed in the years we've been playing together.

The supplements aren't necessary to play, but some of them have some cool fluff and mechanics.

DMing is tough and if you're only in it to tell your story then it's not a role you are suited for. Good luck anyway, but honestly the most important thing is familiarity with the rules so reading the Players Handbook/DMs guide is a good place to start
>>
>>52105592
nah im into the technical aspects, its less about story and more about expanding the game mechanics and incorporating real life shit like larp and alcohol and drugs, what with music and shit, make it a bit more immersive.
seems possible i just gotta know how the game is in practice, i had someone on another thread i made give me alot of advice i didnt get from the core books, but yeah you're right, i might not even like it, id rather find out before putting in all that effort

There's a book called the "Dungeon Master's Guide" which is most of the best advice you need.

The problem with being new to DMing is that you don't really have a frame of reference yet for what advice will be useful to you, so my advice is just learn the basics from the guide, start playing, experiment and make mistakes, and only then worry about stuff that the guide doesn't have.
