Listen up, nerds. This isn't the modern thread anymore, this is the Death's Shadow Jund Thread. If you're not playing Death's shadow Jund, kill yourself please.
I wouldn't ask what you're playing, cause it better be DSJ
I wouldn't ask what you're hating, cause I know it's any deck not DSJ.
I won't ask what you're brewing, cause if you think your little special snoflake retard ass is coming up with something to beat DSJ I have news for you. It's not.
Sideboard? We don't even need a sideboard, cause we win every match 2-0 before turn 3

>Low STR character needs to succeed a difficult climb check up a slippery rope or get stuck in a place that has monsters in it.
>Woo! Nat 20 minus my STR penalty is 19. Do I climb the rope?
>DC is 20
What would you do?
What I did.I let the dude succeed because I didn't know he had that -1 penalty to STR which would make the roll impossible for him. Which means I just told a player to roll for something that's physically impossible to do. So I nudged the DC to 19 and let him climb it.
>>52091346
Nat 20 means you got turbo-lucky and performed a feat. I'd say that (depending on the character) I would either have the character be assisted by the God they worship. That, or while climbing the rope, they swing through a false part of the facade they were probably backed up to and into a secret cavern with a ladder up.
I would have asked "subtly" if anyone wants to help the limp waisted baby climb the treacherous rope.
If they do and get at least a 10+ on their assist check then it confers a +2 bonus making his total a 21 which would pass the check.
>>52091346
I'd do the same. It was my mistake, and if someone somehow knew that exact roll was impossible and called me out for it, I'd own up to it.
If your players need to climb more slippery ropes in the future, just tell them ahead of time what happened previously and that this time a -1 penalty means you can't roll.

Inspiration edition
What inspires you chummer? What moves you through the shadows and what do you follow behind?
What are some great sources of inspiration when you need to get a feel of something in the setting?
A. What contact stats would an organ grinder who you got off of the morgue slab to save from a few robbers have?
B. Does anyone care if I rip off the cool bits of shadowrun videogames?
>>52088478
>B. Does anyone care if I rip off the cool bits of shadowrun videogames?
Shadowrun is a setting built on ripping off things like fantasy, sci-fy, 80s, cyberpunk and more. So I wouldn't mind, as long as you don't put the same twists as the games since anyone that have experience from the games will see it coming.
>A. contact stats
You mean Connection and Loyalty? Wing it, and ask your GM if you need to buy a fixer or not. Just put whatever feels comfortable, just be warned that connection ratings 6+ might be hard to please and maintain.

Book on San Fran just came out.you ban-dodging fuck
I'm making a space sci-fi setting, but I'm torn between making a soft-scifi setting with multiple alien races interacting with humans, or alternatively a ''hard''-scifi without any aliens, with only sentient robots together with cybernetic and synthetic lifeforms in place of extraterrestials.
>inb4 why not both?
I've tried combining elements of the former and latter but it always ends up being an overwhelming mess when aliens and robots and synthetic organisms are stuffed into the setting, since I'm intentionally trying not to make just another Mass Effect/Star Wars universe.
System Shock 2 kinda dodged this issue when it's revealed in the game that the aliens are actually just bio-engineered organisms created from the mutant specimens made by an AI of human origin, but how else could I fix this issue?
>>52075315
How far into the future are you setting this? Would it be reasonable that at least some of the ayylmaos are weird-ass posthumans that evolved from a "First Wave" of colonists, before some shit cut them off from earth?"Weird-ass posthumans" can be anywhere from bumpy foreheads/pointy ears, to REMOVE QU, according to taste.
>>52075315
Fun thing to do in a sci-fi settings is to add a darkage. At some point the FTL system got fucked and society colapsed for a while. Then you can have people not sure what is going on. Are the ayys mutants/syntheyic humans? Could be, and you might find out specificly about some of them. Also lets you have a reason tech isn't tooo advanced, and we can still kinda understand it.
>>52075419
>>52075499
Adding back to these two, bonus if the pre-darkage/posthumans think that they're the only form of life out there, or that they're "true" humans, or that they're superior to thenow-obsoletebaseline human model.
What are some little things you like to add to your character that no one usually notices but you keep doing anyway because you enjoy it? Things like giving them a favorite food, what hand they're dominant with, etc. I often try to give my characters names with meaning ex. I had a soldier/guardsman from a walled city with a last name that can mean "fortification", as well as a pacifist cleric whose full name could mean "vow of peace", or my living wall of a fighter having a last name meaning enduring.
>>52075215
>Character takes research notes on points of interest, historical things, magic anomalies, etc
>Keeps a massive record of their travels and collects other books along the way
>Spends watches and spare time refining these as well as writing and constantly revising letters to his family, including a death letter/last testament, and prayers to give when he reaches a temple
>Character dies, party buries everything with him
I'm not in that group anymore
>Character didn't sleep when the party camped
>Only slept when they were in an inn and he'd have a room to himself
>Only slept near the party when he had gotten to know and trust them.

What kinds of exotic and remote placesdo you like to see in your games?
I like going to places themed off of ancient southern and central american civilizations. It's fun to explore around them and get in fights with blood-thirsty notMayans.
The most exotic of all in a dungeons and dragons game:complete rustic normalcy.

>he DOESN'T ask his players to give an actual home / nice farm / family for their background
I mean, do you have your players be literal murderhobos with no place to call home, not even a back alley?
When one of your players has either been doing exceptionally bad or exceptionally good, have you ever fudged dice rolls in their favor/against their favor?
Is it justifiable to fudge rolls to help out a player who can't catch a break, or to hinder a player who is mopping the floor with your encounters?
No, fudging dice is stupid. If you change the outcome, why fucking roll anyway? To give your players the "illusion"? Forget it, they know.
No fudging.
Rolls in the open.
Final destination.
>>52094780
Just talk to the player who's causing problems about it. If they don't change then don't play with them. Passive aggressive dice fudging seems like a way to prolong the suffering of everyone involved.
>>52094780
as gygax said, the only reason the DM rolls dice is for the skunf they make
im not advocating always messing rolls, players arent dumb they will catch on and notice if you do it too often, but as DM fun is priority one
and really, the players are gonna blame you anyway if they fail 10 checks in a row due to bad luck
best way to get started in mtg?

I'll bite.
Google search 'magic color pie' and follow the rabbit hole to decide which colors you like the gist of.
Browse magiccards.info 's advanced search to find cards by set, color, creature types etc.
Find a local store, play casually with friends. Maybe make some at the store.
If you decide you'd like to try competitive play do some research into what Standard is, and maybe Modern.
It's possible you'll want to keep casual, and Commander/Pauper might be more up your alley.

Give Magic Duels a spin just to get a grasp of the basic rules, I find their teaching tools pretty good.
If you're still on board, there's always Prerelease next month.

I'm quite fond of PA's The Eyrewood and its inhabitants.
Good thing the game is on it's way, looking forward to it!
I think a good Elder Scrolls RPG would be fun, it done well.
>>52096380
Go play D&D, then. It's where all the slobbering Skyrim fans go, thinking that D&D is a way for them to let out their autistic video game tendencies on a DM's world and plot and fuck up the game for everyone else playing by doing "LMAO I rob the guard natural 20 NATURAL 20" shenanigans.
Skyrim players are among the worst D&D players I've ever encountered, closely followed by Dark Scrolls faggots. Really, any video-game-playing twat who comes to RPGs because he thinks it's going to be like Diablo, needs to get fucked. They come in with this mindset that it's going to be just as fast and entertaining as their video game and also centered around them. These fuckers are usually the type to bring their phones and play stupid-ass meme videos while I am trying to talk. They also have motherfucking ADHD and cannot shut the fuck up for more than two minutes without mentioning some anime or making a reference to the latest episode of whatever, completely ignoring the fact that the DM is talking. You know why? Because these twits sit in front of a computer 10 hours a day, jamming their keyboard and drinking Mountain Dew until their fucking hearts explode. Then they come to RPGs and expect the same fucking type of mental stimulation, and when they don't get it they become a fucking menace to the entire table. And you can say "well just make a no phones rule" or "be a more assertive speaker" or some other bullshit nonce advice for pussies with confrontation issues. When in reality what you need to start doing is outright removing these people from your playgroup. Take them aside and give them one warning: this isn't motherfucking Oblivion, this isn't motherfucking Diablo, this isn't motherfucking Dark Soul, this isn't motherfucking World of War-Crap. This is a TTRPG. And if they have an issue with it, and play their stupid skyrim meme videos again, you kick them out of your house and don't give them a ride home like you promised to earlier.

Is cloning people inherently evil?
My DM and one of the other players go into a spat over this. His character attacked a neutral NPC scientist when he described his foundation's attempts to clone a famous sorceress.
>>52090442
No, cloning isn't evil. The player is a retard.
>>52090442
Attacked as in tried to kill?
>>52090442
...Why would cloning someone be inherently evil? That's like saying making cheese is inherently evil, or having children is inherently evil. The action in and of itself has no moral direction or component. It's why and how you do it that informs that. Cloning Hitler to lead your Third Reich is probably evil. So is making cheese so foul and stinky it counts as a lethal weapon in 38 states. Cloning someone in order to give someone who died in a horrible accident a second chance at life is probably good.
Now, the *ethical* issues of any form of created life are a fucking jungle. But that's about consequences and responsible use more than anything
Whenever specific Guard regiments get written about it's because they're so cool and awesome (Cadians / Tanith 1st / whatever) or because they are the most grim dark things imaginable (penal legions).
I can't really find any regular Imperial Guard regiments that just suck dick. Always just mentioned in passing as "a Guard regiment did a frontal charge and all got wiped out rip"
So what are some regiments that just do human wave attacks or just suck otherwise? Wanna know for some writing.
>>52087321
Valhallans do a lot of human wave tactics to the point where they're infamous for them, but even they get the hero treatment in the Ciaphas Cain books.
>>52087353
I think that's because Sandy Mitchell ignored the moderately racist existing lore and wrote his own fluff for them.
>>52087353
Yeah Sandy Mitchell sort of undid that.
Trying to have a Commissar talk about good and bad regiments he's been in, for good I have some random Cadian one because of course, but I'm struggling to find actually useless cannon fodder ones for the opposite.

Yeah, sure
>Rolls all 14s or lower
Might just stop applying since there's no decent build with that
>Rolls two solid stats, shit at the rest
Oh, here we go, have to play a fucking wizard or a rogue with almost no variation in choice
>Rolls all high, 14+ with at least a 17
Sure, no inherent problem with the rolls in themselves, but still annoying when the guy basically has an advanced template strapped in compared to the rest of the party
>>52084293
It matters more in post-AD&D editions
But if you're playing AD&D or a retroclone, you can generally get away with it.
All the more reason that, if you want to play D&D, you should join the OSR master race.
