So my party recently trapped a whole squad of soldiers in the lair of a Mind Flayer to replace the first set of slaves they killed. A Paladin trailing them (because this isnt the first time they've gotten up to evil shenanigans) found this out and added this to their list of crimes. My question is, What would be the name of that crime and what is an appropriate punishment?

Human trafficking

thanks. if everything goes close enough to the way I hope, i'll make them fight the mindflayer. I really want to describe a brain getting sucked out in gory detail
>>
>>52110944
Human Trafficking, Slavery, A number of amendment rights out the window, Theft of a body (See cerebropmorphis) Ecoterrorism (wants to put out the sun), and a shitload of other things. Illithid are guilty by nature.

>>52111026
Their entire bodies are an organ dedicated to brain extraction, battle-wise, it's almost instant, and they kill via a hidden tentacle that strikes the center of the brain after releasing an invisible ensyme that allows them to press into the skull, but the worst way to go is when they use their teeth manually to saw off the head and dig in using psionics to numb, not entirely, but to work parts of the head as it delicately works the brain, removes that outer layer if you've ever seen Hannibal and then take it's first piece, and holding the victim in position as it's nervous system goes haywires, jerks around, and keeping it alive as long as possible as it eats ot only them, but every figment of their being through their minds.

If there's ONE THING to maximize Illithid horror, it's when they capture someone and make the party watch and FEEL them feeding as they stand behind a protective shield, screen or barrier.

I did that once, and it was equivalent of slow, agonising, rape to the party member that suffer through it, it's infact a very violent hyper-patriarchal act of complete domination and control in itself, and it is a thing of totla obliteration of self.

Also, they make a clack, clack noise with their mouths when working/cleaning out the skull bits.

Performance Eating is one of their worst little debaucheries, but to name a few.

So, in my campaign there will be an arc where the main characters need to traverse through a thick, wild jungle, which is currently being ravaged by a war between a more imperial faction against a very guerilla (VC) type of enemy. I was thinking the conflict could have a racial difference for ease of use. Wood elves sadly can't fill that position. There will be poisonous fog clouds thrown out and about, and combat in awful conditions, followed by ambushes and traps everywhere.

Here's my question to you guys. Who should the invasing army be? And who should the protecting army be? The setting is extremely generic fantasy, all races from the PHB exist (even some few from other expansions).

Also, trap ideas and cool questlines of characters are welcome!

>>
Aarakocra (birdmen) would be super cool as the indigenous defenders. I'm imagining them hiding in foggy canopies, swirling down and death-from-aboving the invaders.
>>
VC: Goblins
USA: Dwarves
It doesn't offer the 2 kinds of vietnamese (one allied one opposing to the 'invader'), but it gives you an easy kind of superiors tech+superiority complex+severe stubbornnes. Also potentially gyrocopters and all the other tech to truly cheese it up. The reason for zhe dwarves to invade would be resources. Thinking about it it's the standard scenario for dwarves anyway, but not under the earth.
ALSO forest goblins are best goblins.
>>
>>52110813
I also thought they would be cool! But my other idea was maybe Tabaxi (cat people) or perhaps a variant of Eladrin? (Misty step for diversions) or a new subspecies of Dire Elves?

For rolling stats, hand your players six sets of 3d6 in different colors (red for strength, blue for intelligence, etc). Take a one minute sand-timer, flip it, and tell the players that they have one minute to roll as fast as they can. They can stop whenever or reroll as much as they want, but the catch is they need to reroll all their dice. When the timer stops, their stats are whatever their dice are showing.

>>
>>52109610
You clearly underestimate how fast my players can reroll their dice.
>>
There's a mathematical problem in there. If you have a given number of re-rolls, what is the optimal target you should aim for before stopping?
>>
>>52109610
One minute? Easy. Keep anything at 16 or above, and end with god stats.

Look,I roll high, so this is fine for me. I have only ever really needed one reroll for a stat at 12.

But definitely prioritize the sets of dice for stats critical to you character.

And what's to stop grabbing all of them, and rolling all together thanks to color code?

As a DM I want to engage my players on a personal level. I want them to think outside the box and deal with tough moral dilemmas. So I was planning on having them go to this dungeon where a particularly cruel lich has rounded up all of the town's children as well as the family members of the party's paladin. All of the prisoners are divided in two special cages, the kids in the left and the family in the right.

The cages themselves are Deus Ex Machina. They are 100% immune to any form of tampering and are impossible to break into or out of without using the lich's special key, which he has so graciously placed on a pedestal in the room with instructions. The key will open up either of the locks but it can only be used once. It cannot be copied or altered in any way or form. Once a cage is chosen and unlocked it will dissipate and those batch of prisoners will be free. However, the cage that was not chosen will be hit with a deathknell spell and its occupants dropped into a portal to the negative energy plane where they will be instantly and eternally destroyed with no chance of reincarnation or other restorative spells.

The paladin is the only one who can use the key. If he chooses to save the children he will effectively be sentencing his family to death. Alternately, he could allow innocent children to die by selfishly saving his family, severing his connection to his god and falling from grace. By choosing to do neither then all the victims will slowly expire from thirst and hunger.

Either way he will never confront the lich again and never have an opportunity to right the wrongs he will have a hand in.

So I'm kind of burned out on the standard fantasy elf, dwarf, hobbit etc mix, along with their subtly (or not so subtly) renamed equivalents. I am, however, currently reading the Malazan books, which include a really cool idea: T'lan Imass – immortal zombie Neanderthals, forever bound by magic to the dread task of genociding the fuck out of the Jaghut.

So ITT: world build some fantasy that, rather than using the classical fantasy races, uses proto-humans. Also, discuss the same if you can think of some other examples in fantasy fiction.

~~~
So the Malazan books contain two examples of cool magical proto-humans.
The T'lan Imass I've mentioned. They were once the Imass, flesh-and-blood stone age Neanderthals that got enslaved by Jaghut tyrants and occasionally accidentally squished by normal Jaghuts - Jaghut magic operating on a scale more commonly recognized as ice ages. So they said, screw this for a handful of carefully knapped flint arrow heads and performed a great magical working that bound their souls to immortal never dying bodies. Armed with this power, they then made millennia long war against the Jaghut until that great race was all but extinct.
The other is the (somewhat less cool but still interesting) Eres. The Eres are more or less homo errectus. They were enslaved by the proto-dogs, the magical Deragoth, and evolved to stand upright to help the Deragoth watch for threats. Such as flying mountains driven by hive-mind dinosaur lizard men because when you live in the Malazan world, that is just how you role.
>Cromagnon = Human, baseline human
>Neanderthal = Dwarf, stocky, live more underground than aboveground
>Denisovan = Elf/Fey, so enigmatic, mysterious and rare some even doubt they exist
>Habilis = Halfling, same as human but worse in every aspect
>Fire = Magic, who masters fire can accomplish feats of wonder, like cooking and not dying of cold, and create artifacts of immense power and utility, like metal tools or clay pots
>>
dont forget the barghast moranth and trell, who are direct descendants of the t'lan imass, but not the main humans of the series
>>
The Nightmare Stacks by Charles Stross (and part of the The Laundry Files series) contains 'elves' - a human subspecies from a parallel dimension who evolved the focused psychopathic minds needed for 'safe' ritual magic. They live in a hive like society enforced by magical compulsions called geass.
