John Henry was a steel driving man. That means he hammered out blasting holes for dynamite.

Somewhere along the way the story got changed to him driving spikes.
>>
>>1057678
And what was the dynamite for? Creating railroad tunnels.
>>
>>1057678
This is the most bizarre part. It seemed pretty obvious he was racing against a "steel-driving" drilling machine for drilling holes to place explosives for tunneling, I don't get how everyone thinks it was some kind of track-laying competition.

How do sailboats move forward when they are against the wind??
10 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1057525
drawing the sails in and using momentum from when the wind was with them?

plus i think most modern ones have an onboard motor for that + maneuvering to dock and whatnot
>>
>>1057526
I don't think that would work, because people sailing across the Atlantic would have the wind going against them (right? winds usually go west to east??) the whole time.

Do Nations bother to protect the railroad tracks for their trains? At first glance a single person breaking tracks seems like a pretty good way to bring down a huge expensive train but is it more complicated than that? Can trains continue on their way without trouble if the track's planks are damaged or removed for a short distance? Or do Trains primarily only require the metal of the track to remain in safe motion?

For those wondering Author not terrorist.

Always worth a watch, also the tracks planks are called sleepers.

Some place like to fence the railroad tracks, especially around urban areas. Here in Spain tracks within urban and metro areas usually have some sort of fence, though it's usually some shitty little fence mostly to keep retards from accidentally walking onto the track.

What is more common than track damage is the communication cables being stolen. This has at times left significant stretches of track out of service because the cables had been stolen.

Some more daring robbers try to steal the overhead wire. This also leaves the track somewhat useless if the railway is highly dependent on electric traction.

I don't know how many missing sleepers are a problem, but certainly missing the occasional one is no big deal. I've see trains passing trackwork where there were fewer sleepers than is usual and there was no problem. I guess you'd need to remove/break quite a few before the rails lose stability and the train derails.

I guess they don't worry much about people damaging the tracks, at least here, because there's little point other than terrorism in damaging tracks, and it's really hard to do so in the short span of time between service ending and starting again (add to that the danger of trains during the night, like freight and sheit). Also trains are no longer as essential as they were in the past.

In past times, it was not uncommon to sabotage rail tracks. A relatively small explosion can damage the tracks enough to make them unpassable.

Here's my winter bike for the winter which never really happened. I've been considering taking the snow tires off and putting regular slicks back on it, but I'm afraid if I do I'll call down a late March blizzard on my part of the country. There's been essentially no appreciable snowfall the past two months... pretty disappointing actually, I never actually needed to use my studded tires.

>saddle is somewhat uncomfortable
I know there are people, including me, who would love to have that uncomfortable Flite saddle. There's a saddle thread in the catalog, I posted a few that I have in my parts bin and would happily trade if you were interested. I have a couple of others too, just saying...

Love that bike, looks like a fun ride. How are you planning to use it?

Japan made plenty of great stuff but low floor tram isn't one of them

The trams (as in LRVs, not streetcars like people always associated them with) that were used in Echizen and Fukui railway are german tech that were license-produced

How about instead of trying to get her a different bike, you fix up the one she already has?

Has anyone here got an electric bike? I've been looking into getting one but they're rather expensive, especially the higher-end ones.

Are E-Bikes just a meme or are they actually decent for commuting longer distances?

Yes, no, yes.

If you want to save money and have the knowledge and skills then build one yourself.

>>

Can you build a regular bike? If you have the skills for that you could probably manage an electric conversion.

Hi /n/, Klaus here. I'm spending a few days in San Francisco which is basically an /n/gasm. Taking loads of pictures, any requests or suggestions? Like specific lines, places, vehicles, etc.? I'm mostly taking pics of cable cars, historic streetcars and trolleybuses, but I'm open to anything. I'm also thinking of going over to Oakland to see Jack London square with the trains right in the middle of the street.

Pic related isn't mine, I'll post the pics in a week or so when I get back home, since I'm a disgusting hipster who shoots on film.

You should go visit Berkeley, its like bizarro america. Interesting place to walk around, not sure if any notable /n/ related stuff there though.

In SF down at the wharf you can see them spin trolleys by hand.

Funny, just today I was in Berkeley, my brother was doing his master thesis there.

I've seen the cable car turntable at Powell and Market, it's breddy kewl.
>>
fisherman's wharf in SF is also cool if you are into boats.
there you can find a WWII Liberty ship, submarine, an old sail boat, and other cool boats

not far from Oakland in Tilden park you can find the Redwood Valley Railroad. it is a 15 inch gauge miniture loop you can pay to ride. they have a 4-4-0 and a 4-6-0. Immediatly below is Golden Gate Live steamers, a live steam club that has 7.5 inch gauge.

not close but still in the bay, is the Nile Canyon Railway museum. it is down in between Fremont and Sunol.

Have fun in the bay.

ITT: Post any cool pictures, info or stories regarding railroads and railroading in the Great White North.

Pic related, British Columbia Railway train in 1980.

Fly or sail a boat.

Your license is totally acceptable here in Canada if you're visiting, just remember to switch to km/h.
The only thing that would prevent you from doing this is being stopped at the border for being a wanted criminal or trying to smuggle shit over.

https://sec.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/bombardier-says-cancelling-toronto-rail-deal-would-cause-irreparable-harm/article34339490/?service=amp

https://www.thestar.com/amp/news/gta/2017/03/02/metrolinx-talking-with-another-supplier-for-eglinton-crosstown-vehicles-amid-bombardier-legal-battle.html

Metrolinx is trying to cancel because Bombardier is already two years late with delivery with no firm date in sight.

Metrolinx says they are liable to pay up to $500K in penalty to construction firm if track certification is delayed due to lack of train sets, prolonging the construction period.

How do you feel about this?

Makes me feel glad we went with Alstom instead...
>>
Go with Bombadier, your agency's end is near.

What they should be doing is negotiating with another company now so that when they're freed from this contract they can award a new one immediately to make sure they get them on time. That's what my agency did when it took them an extra two years and four tries to make a structurally sound prototype on a design they've made before and has been used by the agency for almost 20 years.

So Rubber-tyred metro / AGT?
Just make a guideway bus / BRT.
>>
Yeah, the main problem is how to make it better than a vanilla BRT line รก la Curitiba.

Guideways are awkward and are worth it if you use vehicles much bigger than buses. So if you plan to use capsule-size vehicles, just use a slightly modified bus.

Save the guideway for when you build a train.
>>
Even a bus is better in every aspect. A total waste of money.
