How do I into maritime employment?
Is it worth it?
Seems cozy as heck.
This is the boat I worked on last summer, the Lady Washington. After a couple years of seasonal gigs on traditional sailing vessels I finally earned enough sea time to qualify for my AB and 100 ton. Any advice on what to do next? Where to go to school?

Since this is my first post on /n/, I apologize for anything obvious I oversaw.
I am thinking of replacing the shitty rent residence I live in with a yacht.
Israel is my country of residence.
-Financially, it is cheaper to pay for, and maintain a yacht then to pay for rent, and significantly cheaper then to buy real estate here.
Everything is somewhat close to the sea, and I have my own car.
I also have money for sailing license.
But I don't know anything about actually living in a boat.
I was hoping some of you could help me out. Drop some links maybe.
Thanks.
The pirogue (power boat in center) forms the vast majority of our commercial fishing craft.
These guys take the sputtering and misfiring one engined boats over 40 miles offshore to catch yellow fin tuna, dolphin and king fish.
They may be small, but thanks to the sizeable bow, that the pilot can't see passed, they can easily travel in unfavorable conditions often found in these waters
might get an internship on a trawler, hella stoked
Another gas ship waiting to give us the dregs tomorrow

Nah, wasn't me. The barge I move is a cookie-cutter design from Bollinger Shipyards, their 60,000 barrel design. We call em the "Bollinger Bricks", because they tow just like a big heavy brick.

>>1045179
I'm telling you, I built a boat that's pretty much exactly like that, I've even got a 30hp 1984 Yamaha that I bought off of a guy for 300$ and rebuilt myself, misfiring and all. I still find it amazing that the high bow design isn't more popular, for the areas I fish in, (lower Chesapeake bay), I have yet to have water come over the bow even when I got caught out in a storm with near gale force winds and 8ft waves, If I had been in a similar sized john boat I would have been screwed.
The bow can be an issue with a tiller, but you learn to live with it, I eventually found a tiller extension is just about the best thing you can do, and besides there's nothing quite like standing up only holding the tiller extension and a rope to the bow while blasting through chop at night, it really makes you appreciate life jackets, but I've never felt more alive.
>>1050762
some seagoing tugs have high focsle bows like that.
they're supposed to ride really nice in rough weather
>>1050762
>Tiller extension
We just use a section of 3" PVC pipe.
The design is called a Pirogue, but a west Indian variant. The fancy ones are Bowen from Trinidad. On a regular day in the channel you are likely to come across 8' swells on the regular. Though people still cross the 9 miles channel in 12' ribs with 15hp engines.

Huh, apparently CSCL ships became COSCO ships in 2016.

>As part of the integration with COSCO, all of CSCL's North American offices ceased operations in June 2016.
>>1051299
Yeah, I noticed when I was alongside the ship, they still had weld outlines of the COSCO lettering. I don't know if it changed hands again, or if the Chinese just wanted a black hull to blend in with other Atlantic trade.
Having an annoying fuck of a time trying to line up a purchase over the past year. Been mostly looking at older barges and trawlers, do some conversion work and take a bit of a vacation. I've had three times where I've practically been tossing money at a seller only to have them flake.

>>1051429
No shit. You didnt read the post right after the one you replied to?
Getting dragged along
>>1051688
any reason why you guys don't run the line through the bullnose?
>>1051781
It's a balance of factors. When I am riding along a ship, and the pilots asks for a back, I want the direction of the pull to be as straight back as possible.
Since that ship is so high, putting it in the bullnose would put the weight of the pull on the top inside of the nose, creating a pull that is down-and-then-back.
I could alleviate that by letting out more ship line through the nose, but I've got a 55 year old deckhand. I don't want to make him haul in 150' of nine inch line by hand.
Also, running the line straight back to the port side of the H-bit tends to keep the bow of the tug pinched in while getting dragged along (imagine someone pulling a line tied around your left armpit). I do that when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to fuck with the rudder for the ride.
There are all sorts of ways to manipulate the makeup on the H bitts and buttons to counteract wind and current when working a ship. Those tractor tugs have it easy.
>>1051871
That said, I do run it through the bullnose when necessary, usually when pulling a ship off the dock when the bitt is at or near the level of my bow. That's just to keep the line from rubbing on my rails and getting damaged. The downside is that my leverage point is now at the very bow of the tug.
Usually I need to make the line up to the side of the H-bitt due to current. It's not a lot, but those extra bits of pound-feet make a difference when trying to stay up in a 1-2kt current
I've heard some container ships have pools on board?

Call up every company, once a week. Stay on the top of their list when they need a mate "right now"
>>1052784
babby mate. Third mate, Unrestricted/Unlimited. Only endorsement I have is FRB. I couldn't get on a tanker to get PIC.
>start calling
I will as soon as I have my license in hand. They told me to expect to wait 4-6 weeks. Last thing I want to do is to get them to think of me when they need a mate, and then get mad when they find out I can't actually sail when they need me.
Any Britbong sailors here?
What's the cheapest way to get on the water in something larger than a dinghy?
>>1052854
Find a friend with a bigger boat.
Go to a boat club and tell them if anyone needs a deckhand to give you a shout.
Anyone here ever sail on freighters in the Great Lakes?
>>1052627
join a union
>>1053535
Sorry, I should be more specific. If you're unwilling/able to sail MSC, then join MM&P, then buy a cheap but reliable SUV that you can throw all your shit in. Drive to a busy union hall like long beach, Oakland, NY, etc. and take all the night work you can get until you manage to snag a shitty 3/m job. Sail, work all the OT you can get, learn as much as you can, then when you get off bum around and crash with friends/family until you've used up all your vacation and do it all again. Alternately, sit in the hall until you get yet another job, and continue to do so until you get a B book. Take all the classes you can take (especially gov ops related courses).
You'd be even better off joining MSC and sailing with them for a few years, doing a pass-through into MM&P.
>>1053548
Did they? That's not what I heard; I'm MEBA though. If you want I can ask some deckies on here in the morning.
>>1053567
>MEBA mates
those still exist? I thought MEBA lost all of their deck contracts.
>>1053184
Great Lakes sailing ain't that great, but I have.
>>1053539
MSC isn't hiring. They've over hired for the past 2 years and had a much higher retention rate since the Gulf went to shit. MSC cancelled all interviews at the academies this year and I know a guy sitting in San Diego who has been fit for duty since November 2016 and still hasn't gotten a gig.
>>1053548
AMO went all online, not MM&P. They and MEBA (essentially the same union) still do the old school union hall. MM&P and MEBA are very closely intertwined, so much as they share their hall in Long Beach.
>>1053669
Though few and far between they still exist...
>>1053669
No, I'm engine. >>1053881 is correct in that MMP still uses their halls, and that they are very intertwined; typically the halls are owned by MEBA and space is leased to MMP to operate there, although it is sometimes the other way around. MEBA deck still exists (barely) with companies like Keystone and Liberty, and the two unions also allow pass-throughs (there are even MM&P engine jobs which are occasionally filled by MEBA).
>>1051871
yeah, that makes perfect sense.
>Also, running the line straight back to the port side of the H-bit tends to keep the bow of the tug pinched in while getting dragged along (imagine someone pulling a line tied around your left armpit). I do that when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to fuck with the rudder for the ride.
we do this too, we'll also put the line on the knuckle like that if we're pulling a ship off the dock while he's backing out, that way it'll hold the tug close to a 90 degree angle so we can continue pulling him off the dock instead of back

any reason why Americans can't sail on foreign flagged vessels?
>>1054070
>>1051871
also want to point out that in this pic, we hadn't started backing yet, so the line hadn't come tight
also gonna dump a few pics the pilot took while docking a 600 foot molasses tanker

>>1054070
Americans can sail on foreign vessels unless they received financial aid from MARAD (like by going to King's Point) and as such have a maritime obligation to the nation.
>>1054079
>>1054083
interesting, I guess they pay would probably be shit though?

Bow, forward of, obviously. Phone posting is so tiring.
MV Persia, the red vessel near the yellow pilot and containers, sank a couple days ago outside of Trinidad. Note that Lady Michelle, the drug boat, is out doing some drug running.

Generally yes, in comparison. There are exceptions though.

what would be an exception? a yacht?

good thing it was light, otherwise that tug wouldn't have done shit

Americans can sail foreign, but most choose not to for various reasons. I, for one, am a little sketched out by having my pay check come from someone who may not be subject to US laws or regulations. Pay, working conditions, and schedule are other things to consider. A certain percentage of people who graduate from US maritime academies may also be in the US Navy/MARAD strategic sealift officer program and are required to sail on US flagged vessels for a certain amount of time (maintain US license for 8 years) after graduation.
I know a guy who graduated from Mass Maritime and sails for BW Group on one of their LNG ships, he does well for himself. A bit isolated, because he has been the only native English speaker on the vessel for quite sometime and most of the guys have a limited working knowledge of English.
>>1054478
Where does he operate?
Garber Bros. tug Sea Oak, outbound Lake Worth inlet.
I work in the boating industry in Florida, I previously worked for Tow Boat and now work on fuel barges refueling large yachts and ships. It's decent money and I get awesome tips. Some of my buds work at Port Everglades driving forklifts or working as dockhands and they are part of the longshoreman's union making $40+/hour plus overtime and benefits.
I used to run some charters to the Bahamas and Virgin Islands but rarely do it anymore because I have kids now. Considered working on container/shipping vessels but the pay and living conditions and schedule are all not worth it to me.
>>1054713
is the chick who works dispatch for towboat US Ft. Lauderdale hot?
i hear her a lot on 16 and she sounds hot
>>1054766
All women sound hot after you've been at sea for a while.
It's unfortunate that this industry attracts really weird types of women, and for the decent ones, there's an insane amount of competition.
Also, fuck the USCG. Just because their REC is too "busy" to deal with my application doesn't mean I should get pushed back two fucking weeks in the queue. At least let me know right off the bat, not after you've sat on my application an arbitrary amount of time then forwarded it on to another REC.
>>1054311
All crew of 9 survived.
They released a statement today, official news travels slowly here, that there was nothing wrong with the vessel. Waters just got too rough between t&t and Grenada. Seems like the helms man was just plowing straight on.
We have had a small craft warning all week this week. High winds and a serious swell.
>>1054843
You said you work on the bunker barge down there, are you on the tug Indian river?
>>1054713
>Schedule
Fuuuuck being at sea for 3+ months. Even time 2 or 3 week tugboat hitches are where it's at if you want to work the industry and maintain a semi normal social life

why even work in the industry bros
>>1054949
>You will never transfer to a shoreside job because you have nobody on land cares if you shift barges around
>You will never move into the office because you slighted someone in there once

I beg to differ. I'm an ILWU first aid man in Canada and I read science fiction at a professional level. Yeah, the trade off is attending accidents, but it's comfy as fuck in here.
>>1049321
You have the stink of the low board about you.
Ran across some abandoned military tugs in Richmond the other day.
Can someone give me the rundown on what the west coast business is like right now? I think I've reached a tipping point with the latest blizzard to run riot over the east coast. Tired of working and living in this climate.
What's it like working on the west coast? Ship assist, bunkering, coastwise work. Are any companies hiring, or is it just as locked up as the East coast is now? What's the standard rotation over there, and payscales? Do the companies treat you like an actual human?
I'm interested in finding work out there, coming with an NYC resume, but I really have no idea what it's like. My entire social network works on the eastern seaboard and Gulf coast
