Nissan/Infinity have a dock on the LA side, I think it's TI 170. LB 60 is the Toyota/Lexus dock. LB 205 imports Mercedes and exports Teslas and Smartcars.

Not really commercial, but I ran across this cleaning up some pictures.

Apparently it belongs to a Australian network guy, hence the comms, and he refit it to provide all the amenities of a super yacht.

She passes by once every couple of years and anchors for a few days to some weeks.

Probably my favorite pleasure boat in terms of aesthetics.

Since this is my first post on /n/, I apologize for anything obvious I oversaw.
I am thinking of replacing the shitty rent residence I live in with a yacht.
Israel is my country of residence.
-Financially, it is cheaper to pay for, and maintain a yacht then to pay for rent, and significantly cheaper then to buy real estate here.
Everything is somewhat close to the sea, and I have my own car.
I also have money for sailing license.

But I don't know anything about actually living in a boat.
I was hoping some of you could help me out. Drop some links maybe.

The pirogue (power boat in center) forms the vast majority of our commercial fishing craft.

These guys take the sputtering and misfiring one engined boats over 40 miles offshore to catch yellow fin tuna, dolphin and king fish.

They may be small, but thanks to the sizeable bow, that the pilot can't see passed, they can easily travel in unfavorable conditions often found in these waters

Moran has four 6,000 horsepower Z-drives, and McAllister has two or three Z-drives. That's it for the harbor. Everything else is conventional, usually around 3000 horsepower

I'm telling you, I built a boat that's pretty much exactly like that, I've even got a 30hp 1984 Yamaha that I bought off of a guy for 300$ and rebuilt myself, misfiring and all. I still find it amazing that the high bow design isn't more popular, for the areas I fish in, (lower Chesapeake bay), I have yet to have water come over the bow even when I got caught out in a storm with near gale force winds and 8ft waves, If I had been in a similar sized john boat I would have been screwed.

The bow can be an issue with a tiller, but you learn to live with it, I eventually found a tiller extension is just about the best thing you can do, and besides there's nothing quite like standing up only holding the tiller extension and a rope to the bow while blasting through chop at night, it really makes you appreciate life jackets, but I've never felt more alive.

The design is called a Pirogue, but a west Indian variant. The fancy ones are Bowen from Trinidad. On a regular day in the channel you are likely to come across 8' swells on the regular. Though people still cross the 9 miles channel in 12' ribs with 15hp engines.

It's a balance of factors. When I am riding along a ship, and the pilots asks for a back, I want the direction of the pull to be as straight back as possible.

Since that ship is so high, putting it in the bullnose would put the weight of the pull on the top inside of the nose, creating a pull that is down-and-then-back.

I could alleviate that by letting out more ship line through the nose, but I've got a 55 year old deckhand. I don't want to make him haul in 150' of nine inch line by hand.

Also, running the line straight back to the port side of the H-bit tends to keep the bow of the tug pinched in while getting dragged along (imagine someone pulling a line tied around your left armpit). I do that when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to fuck with the rudder for the ride.

There are all sorts of ways to manipulate the makeup on the H bitts and buttons to counteract wind and current when working a ship. Those tractor tugs have it easy.

Usually I need to make the line up to the side of the H-bitt due to current. It's not a lot, but those extra bits of pound-feet make a difference when trying to stay up in a 1-2kt current

Sorry, I should be more specific. If you're unwilling/able to sail MSC, then join MM&P, then buy a cheap but reliable SUV that you can throw all your shit in. Drive to a busy union hall like long beach, Oakland, NY, etc. and take all the night work you can get until you manage to snag a shitty 3/m job. Sail, work all the OT you can get, learn as much as you can, then when you get off bum around and crash with friends/family until you've used up all your vacation and do it all again. Alternately, sit in the hall until you get yet another job, and continue to do so until you get a B book. Take all the classes you can take (especially gov ops related courses).

You'd be even better off joining MSC and sailing with them for a few years, doing a pass-through into MM&P.

we do this too, we'll also put the line on the knuckle like that if we're pulling a ship off the dock while he's backing out, that way it'll hold the tug close to a 90 degree angle so we can continue pulling him off the dock instead of back

Americans can sail foreign, but most choose not to for various reasons. I, for one, am a little sketched out by having my pay check come from someone who may not be subject to US laws or regulations. Pay, working conditions, and schedule are other things to consider. A certain percentage of people who graduate from US maritime academies may also be in the US Navy/MARAD strategic sealift officer program and are required to sail on US flagged vessels for a certain amount of time (maintain US license for 8 years) after graduation.

I know a guy who graduated from Mass Maritime and sails for BW Group on one of their LNG ships, he does well for himself. A bit isolated, because he has been the only native English speaker on the vessel for quite sometime and most of the guys have a limited working knowledge of English.

I work in the boating industry in Florida, I previously worked for Tow Boat and now work on fuel barges refueling large yachts and ships. It's decent money and I get awesome tips. Some of my buds work at Port Everglades driving forklifts or working as dockhands and they are part of the longshoreman's union making $40+/hour plus overtime and benefits.

I used to run some charters to the Bahamas and Virgin Islands but rarely do it anymore because I have kids now. Considered working on container/shipping vessels but the pay and living conditions and schedule are all not worth it to me.

Can someone give me the rundown on what the west coast business is like right now? I think I've reached a tipping point with the latest blizzard to run riot over the east coast. Tired of working and living in this climate.

What's it like working on the west coast? Ship assist, bunkering, coastwise work. Are any companies hiring, or is it just as locked up as the East coast is now? What's the standard rotation over there, and payscales? Do the companies treat you like an actual human?

I'm interested in finding work out there, coming with an NYC resume, but I really have no idea what it's like. My entire social network works on the eastern seaboard and Gulf coast
