Here's my winter bike for the winter which never really happened. I've been considering taking the snow tires off and putting regular slicks back on it, but I'm afraid if I do I'll call down a late March blizzard on my part of the country. There's been essentially no appreciable snowfall the past two months... pretty disappointing actually, I never actually needed to use my studded tires.

The flap only drags at very low speeds and isn't noticeable, when riding at more than 10 mph the wind keeps it off the ground entirely.

My Merida Reacto 500. Bought it last fall, as i wanted to start riding. I think its a great beginner bike, and I have no complaints with it, except for the pleb tyres it came with (Continental Ultra Sport). which im gonna swap to GP4s
Some spec:

>Aluminium Aero frame
>Shimano Ultegra 6800 group
>wheels. Merida super AERO 38
> weight. Around 9.5kg.

Its a bit heavy, but so am i.
Any ideas for further improvement?

just picked this up, sucker for the mixte frames. going to put a new stem along with a drop bar conversion and 9sp. probably going with a single front chainring for cheapness as well.

The XTR shifts well. I'm in Phoenix, so I can't really say anything about all weather performance. The Chris King headset is the smoothest I've ever had.

Damn son, your wheels are heavier than mine (assuming you weigh them without a cassette). Getting lighter wheels was one of the best upgrades I made to this bike, made it so much more responsive. I dropped something like 800g from the wheels themselves and a little over 1kg from the tyres.

This is my Winter bike. Got it for Winter and commuting. But I like it so much I might even upgrade the wheels and groupset to 105. Claris is ok but the big cog jumps really fuck up my climbing. Other than that this is comfy af to ride.

Tax return came in, and got a "new" old bike to celebrate passing my third mate's license test. Just got it today back from an overhaul. Raleigh Tourist, 1975 or 1976 model as best as I can tell based on the hub; I have no idea where to look for the S/N.

Yeah I'm thinking Aksium discs, eventually. My current wheels only have a ten speed hub, which for a 2016 bike is ridiculous but thats a different matter. I will probably ride the Claris til it dies before I upgrade I think but that frame is seriously great.

Swapped tires. Was using Corsas on this bike but I didn't like the look too much and I needed tires for a new build anyway so I put Rubino Pros on it. These are my favorite tires yet, they feel great on rough roads.

Thanks! I ended up riding probably 10 miles in a few different locations. This was my first day of riding and it's more fun than I thought it would be. Even put on my LED headlamp and cruised until 10 pm.

Don't. It will look tarded. Cut the steerer _a_bit_ but leave at least a 5 mm spacer on top so your stem fully grips the steerer and the bung top has room to sit above it.

Well I don't think a lack of spacers under the stem makes a bike look more or less tarded. And yes, I always leave a 3mm spacer on top.

Rims are WTB Frequency CX with the stickers removed. And not sure on the tire, though I've taken these studded ones off and mounted some CX tires for the commute now.

I had it fixed for a while, but the gear on the fixed side was too tall for where I am so I switched it to SS.

This is from a customer who didn't want it. Everything on the bike was BTFO, so it ended up being cheaper for him to buy a new bike (a Giant Escape) than to replace all the worn/broken bits. He left the old bike for me to scavenge.

Judging by a quick google search it seems to be Road bikes with PHAT tyres

its like cyclocross but done with mtb components
there aren't really any new bikes like that, its more of a custom thing
they aren't really valid for races, so not much commercial drive for it

basically take a rigid mtb, old chromoly ones from the 90s work well
slap dirt drops, which are wide flared drop bars on there
rig up something with the shifting, either modern 1x10 or (my preference) old 3x7
shifters are going to be a bit hackish, some builds use cheap friction levers that mount on the bars
you can run wide-ish tires
the drive train is tough since mtb components

you can shred like mad on a good rig like that

The focus is shit but I never take photos of my bike.

Does anyone have reccomendations for mudguards (front and rear)? Detachable and preferrably cheap is what I need. I'm an ausfag and it rains once a month, so it's good to have one you can slap on in the morning if it's raining. I use an ass saver extended on the back and it works pretty well, but the spray from the front soaks my lower pants.

How would you guys go about getting a good MTB but at a low price (I can't afford over 500€).

That bikes doesn't seem terrible, not particularly good but a step up from department store tier "mountain bikes". The brakes aren't going to be the worst thing about it, that would probably be the drivetrain.

He was asking if you had short arms, probably because you have the saddles so far forward. You really need to work on your fit, I can't imagine the bars on that Diamondback are comfortable at that angle and the Giant looks like it'd put a lot of weight on your arms.

I thought about upgrading but I decided to keep it the most original I could. I did upgrade the RD and FD to suntour units. This particular year came with plastic (yes plastic )simplex derailleurs that were notorious for breaking which mine were when I found it.

The frame however is single butted Reynolds 531. Very responsive for such an old bike (1971). A little heavy but makes for super solid and comfy over rough stuff. Thanks for the kind words

I bought this last week at a department store. The only reason I got this is because my gf wants us to have a no/low impact activity because I weigh 300 pounds and she is 230.

I chose this one mostly because it was cheap, at only 70 bucks, and it could support my weight. I got her a cruiser for 70 as well. I didn't want to put a lot of money into getting them because I figured she'd lose interest in it soon enough.

I'm the type of person to do a ton of research before and after buying something. I'm a little more enthusiastic about bicycles now. I know this would be a shit bike for any kind of hefty use, like a downhill MTB trail. In fact the handlebar has already come loose and I had to re-tighten it, and the things shifts like garbage. But it's been fun re discovering my inner child.

Also, my daughter likes riding with me. I got her an in-step bicycle trailer and she enjoys the ride. I think I'll be a little more serious in the maintenance now.

the thing with a BSO is its really hard to know
some of them are suprisingly good, and can last for years and ride well
some of them won't make it a month

a big part of it is also that department store bikes are assembled by employees who don't know how to do it properly, or aren't paid enough to care
if assembled properly most of those bikes would probably be fine
they'd still have shit components and poor overall build quality, but they wouldn't just disintegrate
however, if the bearings weren't greased properly and aren't adjusted well then they will die faster than you can imagine

that's probably because the cables aren't routed well and the indexing for the derailer hasn't been adjusted well (or at all)

stuff like this is all fine if you know your way around bikes already and have the tools to correct it and the desire to do so for a cheap bike
however, just starting out, a BSO can be bad to the point where its dangerous

That's fair reasoning, don't be put off by other's opinions. Before you buy a new stem try flipping the current one and it looks like you could raise it a tad too (unless that fork has a carbon steerer, in which case it's recommended to have a spacer above the stem). Also if you do replace the stem you may find that a shorter one could actually get you more upright than one with more rise. You can also play about with bar width to vary your positioning .

Plus, who's to say your core strength won't improve over time, and one day you'll run into a nasty headwind and the drops will come in handy?

What if the hoods were still too far forward for the guy and he only ever used the tops then? Would you still say he should have drops instead of flats? Also a drop bar bike would be more expensive due to the hydraulic disc brakes, slightly less so if they were cable but it's still more money for something he wouldn't use.

It's a roland packsaddle comp. 1990s. Fully rigid. Chromoly frame. Shimano stx group. Converted it from canti to v brakes. Much better power. My first mtb I built and have been on it for 2 years. I'm now looking for a entry level hard tail with a suspension fork. Let me know if you have any questions.

Not bad. The fork will probably shit out, but with tires that big, suspension is probably redundant anyway. If you've got a local bike co-op, throw out some feelers to see if they have a suspension-corrected fork on hand in case the worst happens.
Also: THOROUGH BIKE CHECKUP. Bearings lubed, drivetrain adjusted, wheels trued. Always expect crummy setup on a dept. store bike.

I'm a newbie with bikes but I'm looking for something other than my full suspension MTN bike to ride around on.

that would make a decent commuter, and would be pretty fun to ride around as a road bike
you're going to want to replace saddle and pedals if you get it, so factor that into cost
it won't be very fast compared to modern road bikes
downtube shifters take some getting used to, but are very tough and reliable
2x7 drivetrain is out of date and has big gaps in ratios, but is simple, and should reliable and easy to maintain, and is plenty for most riding
the rack/fender eyelets on the dropouts are nice, that makes it easy to set up for commuting or getting groceries and stuff
modern levers and hoods will be comfortable, and bars look decent
chromoly frame will be kinda heavy, but smooth riding and tough
drivetrain looks like its in ok shape, but make sure to lube the chain or replace it if it is worn, and double check the indexing and derailer limit screws

i would buy it for < $200 probably, but keep in mind that its ebay, so you have to factor shipping cost into price
also, ups can seriously fuck over bikes sometimes, so its possible that if it gets shipped it'll be trashed by the time it arrives, so make sure to insure the shipment
