>tfw 24 and don't know how to ride a bike

I grew up in a bad neighborhood, and never really had the need for one but I want to finally learn since it looks really fun.

How fucked am I? I can ride a skateboard if that makes any difference.

Not fucked at all. You just need to get the balance down, and that's just a manner of keeping your speed up. I personally finally learned how to balance without training wheels by riding my bike down a slightly inclined driveway.

Don't worry. Once you get it even once, it clicks for life.
>>
It's generally easier for adults to learn to ride bikes than for kids - as an adult, you've probably learned to be at least somewhat patient and persistent and logical.

Start by learning to coast down a slight incline with the saddle lowered so that your feet can touch the ground - as you coast, practice turning by shifting your weight from left to right, not by turning the handlebars. Once you've learned to coast, you can add pedaling.

I just got back from my neighborhood park and started to coast down a small incline, and I think I'm getting the hang of it. My seat was lowered all the way, and I pushed off like I was riding a skateboard.

The incline leads to a left curve, but I started to lose balance once I tried turning, but I'm making a habit of using the handbrake.

I tried pedaling a bit but my seat was way too low, so that wouldn't work. I'll go back tomorrow and keep coasting down that hill and hope for the best. Thanks a lot for your advice, anons.

If you find the thief, you should cut off all the fingers on his left hand. Then make him eat the fingers.

You could argue they're run-of-the-mill, the bare minimum of design, and generally uninspired/soulless, especially when it comes to the A320 family. To be fair though, the 737 family has been going down this path ever since the -800.

However, I will have to disagree with you regarding the A330, A340, and A350. They are amazingly beautiful. Hell, even the A300 and A310 are great.

Man it looks like a racoon. The A300 is kinda boring in my opinion, too.

I will concede on the A330 and A340, though. They do look great

I disagree on the A330, I think it looks to utilitarian, but not really so in a good way. It looks a lot better than an A320, but I think the 777 has the "beautiful workhorse" look down so well that the 330 can't beat it there either.

The A340 on the other hand looks absolutely stunning.

Looking to make a model of this DL&W 4-6-0. I've been able to find the original (though basic) drawings of this engine in the attached pic. They were originally camelbacks that they converted to conventional cabs in the later years but there doesn't seem to be any drawings of them during their conversion. Trying to make this in HO scale without just eyeballing it

Two weeks ago my girlfriend decided that we needed a new exercise to start losing weight. I weigh 300 pounds, so it was really about me losing weight more than her.

I was originally against the idea because the last time I rode a bike, I broke it while going to the convenience store to buy more food to stuff myself with. Truly a fitting punishment for my bad lifestyle choices. I weighed 330 at the time. After I broke it I was too embarrassed to try and ride again.

I tried jogging and eating better, which is how I lost the original 30 pounds, but I began to get shin splints and that hurt like hell, forcing me to stop exercising for days at a time while I healed. After some research we found that due to my weight, bicycling and swimming were likely our best choices for low/no impact cardio exercises.

Since there is no pool that is easily accessible nearby, we opted for bicycling. I bought a Huffy Vantage 3.0 because it had the plus tires and it could support my weight. Regular tires can't. I didn't think I'd like it very much at first, but I've actually been loving riding the local walking/jogging trail at the park and around my neighborhood. But I couldn't help but notice two glaring issues with the bike.

The first, and most annoying, was that when I try to shift into the lowest gear on the 3x crank set, the chain stays in second gear for a long time. The only way I can get it to actually go into the next gear is by shifting my rear derailleur into a higher gear. If I don't do it this way the chain will sometimes come off. It's like a gamble, sometimes it'll fall, sometimes it'll shift.

Could this be a problem with the chain length? Or is it more likely a problem with the set up of the front derailleur? If neither, what is the most likely thing it could be.

The second thing is when I shift into a high gear while trying to build speed/putting the bike under load, the gears will slip and cause me to lose momentum. I did a bit of research and found that this may be caused by damaged teeth or the like, but I can't seem to find any damaged teeth. It's a brand new bike, although not very expensive, so I would expect that it would last a little longer than this.

What should I do to try and fix this problem? Is it a common problem? Or am I just paying for buying a cheaper bike? What would you recommend I do now?

I am rediscovering my love for bicycle riding, and it is helping me exercise and lose weight, but I cannot afford to buy a brand new bike. Though I may be able to replace some parts and do the work myself. I have access to the internet for how to videos, and plenty of tools and a workshop, as my father owns an auto shop.

I would really love to keep on riding, any and all help or advice will be appreciated. Thank you.
>>
Sounds like your gears aren't properly indexed. Guaranteed the front isn't with that description and rear problems might be partly caused by shitty indexing. There are plenty of videos on how to index gears in YouTube if you want to try doing it yourself. It's really simple to do and doesn't require any tools as long as they're in the right ballpark when you start working. Or you can take it to a LBS if you are afraid of doing it yourself.

The problem with rear shifting can also be caused by you trying to shift under too much load. You shouldn't shift under full load as it may cause all kinds of problems. So when you're building up speed and shift to a higher gear you want to slightly ease up the pedaling as the derailleurs do their job. If you try to change gears under load the chain is more likely to skip or even drop completely as it doesn't have full contact with the sprockets while switching from one to another.
>>
>>1061733
Thank you for the advice, I'll try and correct the indexing and see if that helps.

Also, about the gears slipping, I feel like I should make it clear that I am not shifting while under load. I make sure to pedal lightly until I am in the gear I want.

The slipping happens when I try to put a heavy load on the bike. It happens in every gear depending on what I'm doing. Going uphill I slip in low gear, and downhill I slip in high gear.

Any ideas?

Well there's your problem

Why all the hate between /n/ and /o/. There would be no problems if we had a city with good infrastructure for both cars and bikes, as well as good public transportation. I love cars, motorcycles, bicylces, ATVs boats, planes, trains, and everything in between. So why all the hate? Love not war is what we need.
So, what is the best place/city which has

>good streets
>a lot of bike lanes
>public transport
>good sidewalks
>and more /n/ and /o/ approved shit.

A car-friendly road system is inherently unfriendly for pedestrians and (bus) transit, though.
>urban freeways disrupt the street grid and divide neighborhoods, harming walkability
>wide stroads allow cars to move faster but are 1) generally high speed and 2) a nightmare to cross, both of which disadvantage peds
>SOV drivers won't want to give up lanes for dedicated bus service or bike lanes, so buses will be perpetually stuck in traffic or in "HOV" lanes and cyclists will have to ride on the street

You could get around some of these by putting all your urban freeways in trenches and lidding them, and building pedestrian bridges/underpasses across major roads, but that costs money and drivers won't vote to raise their own taxes to pay for things that don't benefit them
>tl;dr such a place doesn't exist

I'm in an internet argument about whether or not steam engines had speedometers or other means of measuring speed in them in 1885.

Thank you for any responses :)

in America, at the time. they didn't.
telegraph lines were next to the track and each pole was a certain distance apart. (I think 40 ft)
engineers would count how many they passed in ___ seconds and use that to approximate their speed.

Well, in Canadian Pacific's case the answer is No. The crew timed between mileposts to determine that, and I have been told that counting the number of poles over a given time (ex: 1 min) gives a ballpark figure, the main drawback being that the poles may not be evenly spaced due to terrain etc.

Also heard some may count the number of times the steam exhausts out of the cylinder on one side during a given period to determine speed as well. But that would be different for all of the diffrrent wheel diameters.

I.e. they jus listened to approximate speed; you can do this in a car to within a couple mphs desu
