Hi /n/, Klaus here. I'm spending a few days in San Francisco which is basically an /n/gasm. Taking loads of pictures, any requests or suggestions? Like specific lines, places, vehicles, etc.? I'm mostly taking pics of cable cars, historic streetcars and trolleybuses, but I'm open to anything. I'm also thinking of going over to Oakland to see Jack London square with the trains right in the middle of the street.

Pic related isn't mine, I'll post the pics in a week or so when I get back home, since I'm a disgusting hipster who shoots on film.

You should go visit Berkeley, its like bizarro america. Interesting place to walk around, not sure if any notable /n/ related stuff there though.

In SF down at the wharf you can see them spin trolleys by hand.
>>
>>1049957
Funny, just today I was in Berkeley, my brother was doing his master thesis there.

I've seen the cable car turntable at Powell and Market, it's breddy kewl.
>>
fisherman's wharf in SF is also cool if you are into boats.
there you can find a WWII Liberty ship, submarine, an old sail boat, and other cool boats

not far from Oakland in Tilden park you can find the Redwood Valley Railroad. it is a 15 inch gauge miniture loop you can pay to ride. they have a 4-4-0 and a 4-6-0. Immediatly below is Golden Gate Live steamers, a live steam club that has 7.5 inch gauge.

not close but still in the bay, is the Nile Canyon Railway museum. it is down in between Fremont and Sunol.

Have fun in the bay.
>>
Do you need to pay a fare to ride the cable cars or are they free?

you pay,
it has become more of a tourist attraction than a practical public transit device
>>
>>1049999
Welp.
>>
>>1049969
thanks pham.

>>1049979
they're really expensive at 7 dollars for a single ride. But I'm getting one of those passports and I'll spend the whole fucking day riding cable cars and streetcars.

Cable cars are kewl as fucking FUCK, but riding on a PCC is a pleasure that should not be underestimated. Seriously you guys, those PCCs are WAY more comfy than any modern bus or streetcar I've ever been on in my life. They must be like the absolute zenith of streetcar design. And to think in Barcelona we once had actual american-built (as in not some shitty licensed eurocrap) PCCs, bought 2nd hand from Washington DC. I WANT MUH PCCs REEEEEEEE

>>1049999
Will throw myself in front of cable car tomorrow and post results.

jk OP have a good trip. I love you. I love EVERYONE on /n/ no matter how autistic you are.

You should go to New Orleans. It's the PCC mecca of the U.S.
>>
>>1050194
That's a Pearly-Thomas not a PCC.
>>
>>1050194
>PCC mecca
>literally one of the very few important systems in the US that never got PCCs
you had one job anon
>>
>>1050194
You fucking retard. There are no PCCs in New Orleans.

Fun fact:
Besides the Disney-level eclectic mix of different fun mass transit trains, the San Francisco Bay Area is notable in terms of trains in another way: it's a sort of Mecca for ridable miniature railroads. The 22-inch gauge ridable miniature railroad in the San Francisco Zoo has the distinction of running San Fran's only steam locomotive. Pic related.

Other notable ridable mini railroads with steam locos in the San Fran area:
Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad Los Gatos
Tilden Regional Park Berkeley
Sonoma TrainTown Railroad Sonoma

The zoo and the latter two in the above list also have super historically-legit antique carousels. The one at the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad for instance was at the 1915 Panama Exhibition in San Fran and is one of only two British-made antique carousels (or gallopers as the call them) in operation in the US (you can tell it's British because it turns clockwise rather than counter-clockwise like US-made carousels).
>>
>>1050532
The Billy Jones RR was the inspiration for the train at Disneyland and Billy Jones himself operated the Disneyland trains for the park's openly weekend.
>>
>>1050540
I recently did a complete rewrite of the Disneyland Railroad article on Wikipedia (with sexy references top to bottom).

When Disneyland was still in its planning stages, Disney wanted to explore the option of buying already-existing trains to save money and approached Billy Jones who had a whole set of one-third scale mini trains to sell. Jones gave him a price, but Disney thought it was too high and declined. Disney decided then that he did not want a "zoo train" like the ones Jones had and decided to build his trains bigger and in-house.

So, in an indirect way, Jones influenced the design of the Disneyland Railroad, but it was no where near as significant of an influence as Disney's miniature Carolwood Pacific Railroad in his backyard, or the full-size Grizzly Flats Railroad owned by Disney animator Ward Kimball (arguably one of the greatest railfans to ever live) in his backyard.
>>
>>1050784
Speaking of Disney, San Fran has the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio, and one of its star pieces is Walt Disney's original miniature locomotive from his backyard railroad. It's coupled to a miniature caboose that Disney carved and furnished himself, including a tiny potbelly stove that actually works (he was nuts about trains and also miniature models).
>>
I didn't get to see Jack London Sq, damn shame too, weather was godawful and I had some things to do with my senpai. Couldn't be arsed to go see the miniature railroads either, sounds kinda intredasting but tbqhwy my interest lies mostly with anything that somehow qualifies as public transportation, so it was a low priority anyway.

I'm about to get on my flight back home, I'd say keep this thread bumped until I can post pics but fuck it this is /n/ and the thread will last weeks before being pruned. Crossing my fingers that I got some decent shots. See y'all in a few days.
>>
>>1050915
A bump for you my friend.
>>
>>1050194
>new orleans
>only major streetcar system to NOT upgrade to PCC's
>PCC mecca

I don't know if you meant to trigger the collective autism of /n/ or not, but you sure pulled it off. Get the fuck out, you casual.
>>
Went to photo lab today, will take about a week and a half to get them back because I used slide film (negs would be just one day). Cost me a bunch, too. I just hope it was bloody worth it...
>>
>>1051363
Post 'em b4 the thread's dead.
>>
>>1049955
Take the ferry all over the bay. Bit pricey, but amazing views.
>>
>>1053809
I've been back for a week now pham, but thanks for the tip.
>>
>San Francisco
>/n/-gasm
oh my god no please stop
SF has the worst public transit out of anywhere I've lived in the US despite how "extensive" it is
take a fucking look at BART ffs
TriMet was nicer than any public transit system i've been on in the Bay Area, and that's saying quite a lot.
>>
>>1054372
Then you've only lived in New York and Chicago.
>>
so......are the pictures ready yet?
>>
>>1056927

So I went to the lab today and it turns out all four rolls of slide film I shot got ruined in developing. Only the one roll of neg was saved, which has about 10 useful images. I'll post what I've got.

Only a few pics look that "good" the others are completely or almost completely white.

Yeah I got my money back, they didn't charge me for the two neg rolls and I got four fresh rolls of film. Poor schmuck was sorry as hell, not even really their fault since they outsource slide development (and will likely stop offering it after this). I'd still rather have had my pics ;__;

>>1057652
You can get a ticket for unlimited rides over a few days, they're not cheap but worth it to ride the cable cars all day erry day.

>>1057648
Not much to do desu. There's almost no color information left, and most pics are totally burned out.

Here's a cable car being turned around.

even then, i understand why nobody wants to commute using these. unless you're a "rich liberal hippie."

Years ago when I went to SF I noticed they were doing this to a bunch of old buildings. Supporting the facade, demolishing rest of the building, and constructing a new building behind the facade.
>>
>>1057809
I was thinking the same thing
>>
>>1057803
There aren't hippies anywhere around the cable cars. Totally wrong part of the city. Don't let that fact stop you from having something stupid to say.
>>
>>1057766
iirc Provia 100

>>1057803
there's no point in commuting by cable car. the lines are only a few miles long and run mostly around gentrified downtown and the business district.

Not sure if i'm too late or not, but SF has some old ex. Blackpool 'Boat' trams as I recall. Not sure which line they operate on. These were imported from the seaside 'resort' of Blackpool in England years back.
>>
>>1057902
They only run on the E and F lines.
>>
>>1057902
This:
>>1057911

The E and F lines run all of the heritage electric streetcars. They have several historic ones from all over the world in operation. Very eclectic; very charming.
