How did somebody as fucking useless as Constance Garnett become the official go-to translation for Russian literature?
Did it make the English feel good to reduce it to fucking trash? Is this a meme that Barnes and Noble sells her shitty translations as the Classics?
Although you can do better than Garnett these days, her translations are not bad. It's common knowledge that she made mistakes, but if her mistakes are more famous than other translators' that's because her translations have borne the most scrutiny. Russian translators and scholars of Russian literature rarely have much bad to say about her; in fact, they often acknowledge her respectfully as a pioneer who did groundbreaking work.

It's fair enough that she was the first for many to be able to connect with the books in her time, but they turn something great into a chore to read.
Comparing hers to other translations I feel like she isn't the translator books should be getting printed for and prescribed with.

What book are you trying to read? I can probably recommend a better translation.
>sit in front of the computer staring at a blank word page
>sweating and afraid to touch the keyboard
>my vision starts to blur
>write half a page
>it's embarrassing dogshit
>delete it and feel embarrassed for days afterwards
>still cringe at the memory months and years later
Every fucking time. And I'm just to stupid to learn to stop doing it.
What about it is embarrassing?

>university union is apparently one of the best in the world at debating
>attend three debates
>all of them are shit and posses no class, taste or brevity about them
>mfw this is modern day education
Was there ever a more apt time to self-educate than now?
If (you) can read, retain, write and combine-- why not? If (you) need assistance, the resources are at (((your))) fingertips..
>>9261850
I only want to attend Uni so I can become a teacher or a lecturer and so I can say with some conviction, if you don't care for any sort of qualification and you just want to be well read and educated then self-education and youtube professors are the best senpai.

Yeah, try to find half the shit I have with my university resources. It's only awaste of money if you fuck around your entire time.
How many of you read non-fiction non-linearly?
>>9261670
Me
I jump
>>9261670
would never read anything written chronologically non-linearly (e.g. biographies, histories) but i read most other non-fiction in order of what interests me the most immediately
Never, I'm autist and it makes me uncomfortable not to read linearly
I need your help anons. Started a reading challenge with a girl that im interested in (as a robot it's very hard to interact so im desperate to catch her attention and get some conversation topics) and she is clearly mocking with me by selecting YA and mystery books. I need your help to help me chose the next title. It can be everything except DIY or clearly-philosophical books. No longer than 400 pages, tho. Could you help me out?
Kama Sutra. Don't be a bitch. Ask her on a date.
if you were a robot, you'd have a job.
What books describe an economy and/or a social structure of communism and technocracy?
Also, does this idea appeal to you? Do you even know what technocracy is?
I dunno
No
Yes.
>>9261520
Honest answer.
>>9261514
Its not so much communism as nihilism, but A Question Concerning Technology by Martin Heidegger would be a good starting point.
Is there an age limit to read this book? Never read it in high school because my class voted to read The Catcher in the Rye instead. I'm 24.
still a virgin?

Obviously if I'm on this board.

Anyone on /lit/ ever watch David Milch's (creator of Deadwood) Idea of the Writer talks?
i cant speak for other people, but i havent
>>9261457
They're awesome, he basically speaks about his framework of phenomenologically understanding what drives the act and experience of writing framed by his reading of Kierkegaard and Coleridge intersperced with an engaging biography of his life and work as a writer.
Shits dope
Final bump with some lectures regarding it

remember an ep where hannibal was talking about paradise lost
>>9261072
Hannibal reads obscure German philosophers/occultists
Will reads Reddit-core
>>9261153
I don't see Will reading a lot, at least not after he met Hannibal...but i don't think he would surf boards either.
This shit annoys me to no end. The page isn't blank because you printed those words there.
If the must print something because they don't trust their own runs, couldn't they just have picked a nice little symbol or something instead of that fucking line.
>This shit annoys me

Wich translation do i need?
I have direct access to the Pevear & Volokhonsky
and the Burgin & O'Connor. Are these any good or should I buy a different version?
Not sure about any others but P+V was tough going. Dialogue especially felt stilted and unnatural, more like what I'd expect from Google Translate than a published work.
P&V translations are most precise, but have rather rough flow. Just stop being a little bitch and learn Russian, фaм.
Burgin & O'Connor was fine.
Just finished this, lads.
How did it affect your Christian faith?
