Hey Literatos, I've been wondering what you think about comedians.

Honestly I dont read enough, so most of the ideas I get come from movies, music, and stand up comedians. Specially Carlin,CK and Hicks just to name a few. So my thoughts are very influenced by these guys.

My question is, do you consider that comedians are like philosophers for lazy people?
Are the words of these just the simple and digest version of another philosophies?

The good comedians are provocateurs. The bad ones use comedy to forward their political beliefs onto less smart people.
>>
>>9256974
Some people consider Rand a philosopher so it doesn't surprise me that reddit comedians would be considered one too.
>>
>>9256974

Carlin triggers 4chan because he was anarchist/liberal, even though he was genuinely funny and a genius observational comedian. Also cause he is super mainstream or something. Also an atheist, don't mention atheism or you will trigger the pseudo-christ cucks.

Aside from classics such The Prince and Republic, what are the best works of literature concerning political science/theory/philosophy? Bonus points if non-Western.

Also, would anyone happen to know of a website/bookstore which would offer Spanish editions of these books?

Why were you sending your only copy of your manuscript, and why do you only have one copy? Also, are you also self-publishing?
>>
>>9256946
No, I was sending it to a publisher for review but they haven't received it in over a week!

Is this worthwhile reading?

Fixed that sentence for you. And to answer your question, no not for you, read a middle school grammar book you fucking faggot
>>
>>9256856
Your sentence is fine, don't let self-declared linguistic prescriptivists say you otherwise.

As for the book I highly enjoyed it, but don't agree with everything.
>>
>>9256863
The OPs sentence is grammatically correct.

What is this board's consensus on this book? or just Don Delillo in general?

What do you think about Underworld?
>>
Admittedly it's been about a decade since I read it, so the specifics are a little hazy, but I remember liking it a lot.
>>

I have only read White Noise, and am wondering in what direction to go in with Don Delillo's stuff. I've heard Libra and Underworld are two of his other best works, are they worth reading if i liked White Noise?

How many books do you read a week? A month? How long does it take you read say, a 400 page book? What about a 1000 page one? How many hours do you spend reading a day?

Sorry for the questions, but I need a lot of answers.

depends on how depressed I am.

When I'm doing good, I can read about 1000 pages in, say, 4 days, if I read 10 hours a day.

On a bad day, I can't read shit. Nothing.

On average, I read about 4 hours a day.
>>
>>9256739
Haven't been doing too good lately, so it has been around 30-50 pages a day for a month.

Is The Road a good starting point for McCarthy?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I guess?? He's not really an author you need a "starting point" for. Read it if you want, but imho it's a bit shit. Blood Meridian is like "the" McCarthy book.
>>
As far as I'm concerned, it's his weakest book. I'd suggest you rather look up Child of God or the Outer Dark or maybe the Border trilogy, but as the anon above me said, there's really no "entry point"
>>
>>9256685
you could just watch the movie desu, if you want to experience trve mccarthy get yourself a copy of blood meridian

when you have such great ideas but can't write...

>invented austrian school economics before i even know what laze-faire meant

>came up with kant's categorical imperative in school during a class debate on murder

>at age 18 found out my critique of christanity had been expressed before by nietzsche

>independently penned most of hegels core ideas during puberty

>many of my beliefs about culture and society i discovered had been already been made by foucault

now i have a few more thoughts which i know have yet to be at least published, but i can't write so nobody will take them seriously, even though i know soon enough someone else will come up with them and change the world

Amusingly, it outlines many of the strategies he employed in his political campaign, such as negatively responding to critics, coming up with grandiose claims/promises to attract more media attention than the competition, meeting with and understanding foes, setting fantastic goals, and setting up scandals to detract from real issues and make his opponents look like idiots, regardless of the truth. Good read for business, great read for recent politics.

realistically that's a big part of why people even talk about him here or anywhere.
it was a huge move for his career.
Literature is dying and he knew it, this was pretty much the only way to cement himself into the canon before the doors were closed.
"this'll get them cracking at their desks eh what?"

I took a creative nonfiction course with him at Ponoma back in '94. We weren't allowed to show anyone our essays outside of the class for some reason. He seemed naturally intelligent, didnt need to look at any notes or textbooks or prepare for any lectures, he just knew his stuff and was super casual.

I saw him talking to a girl on campus one day. He uncharacteristically wore a Fila sweatsuit, the kind that looks like it's made from the same material as parachutes, and trainer sneakers with a matching bandana. That was his pussy hunt outfit apparently. Several times a week, same outfit, I'd see him hitting on women in it. I once saw him wearing it while carrying an identical outfit from the dry cleaners, he had like 4 sets of same Fila sweatsuit.

I asked him about it in class and he said we aren't allowed to discuss anything unrelated to class while inside class, the same way we can't show anyone outside of class our essays. A student called out "but Dostoevsky isn't in this class and last week you talked about replicating his black tea obsession to test its affects on your own writing". Wallace stared blankly at the student with dead eyes for 30 seconds in dead silence then said "you just got knocked down a full letter grade. Any other smart asses? Didn't think so." and pushed up his glasses with his index finger.

I remember telling myself this guy will either be super successful or kill himself.

Is it consistent to think that something is morally wrong but that it should also be legally right?

- I believe stealing should be constitutionally illegal
- I believe that stealing a loaf of bread from a supermarket for your starving child is not morally wrong

Both sentences make sense but together they don't seem to hold up, I mean, you can't include exceptions like this in legislation.

your example seems to be about the reverse tho
also i don't think you mean 'constitutionally'

adding conditions to morality only shows that the individual axioms, like stealing is bad, are impure and do not suffice as moral tenements. you just have to learn what the root of morality is so it can be all encompassing while still maintaining itself down through the infinite possible scenarios.

Everything is translated if you think about it. The way you perceive words in your native language is a form of translation.
>>
>>9256218
Subtitles are still translations. So I guess you have no way out but to learn the language of every single movie you want to watch.
