I need to get rid of win7, convince me to ubuntu
I already have xubuntu on my laptop and have no problem with linux, I'm just scared for muh gaymes..
Tier 1 help desk. I was told it's going to be all remote support, no heading next door to be there physically to fix stuff.
Anyway, I start in a week, and I'm actually pretty nervous. There's like 2 months training once I start, is that normal? How much training do I need to reset passwords? What's Tier 1 training about?
Also what's the day to day like? When I look for some info, I mostly see either vague stuff or parody videos about how tech support sucks your soul through your urethra with a plumbing snake. So what's a real day to day like, and is there much variation as far as you know between different companies?
Also what's the best way to move up to Tier 2, and keep climbing? What can I do to set myself apart at work? I want to make a career of this, and get myself in a comfortable sysadmin position someday soonish.
Tell me all about Tier 1, and if you got to a better position through help desk, tell me about that. And if there's no way up in this company, how long should I stay and rack up those EXP points before moving on?
My ultimate goal is Linux sysadmin, so I plan on collecting Linux certs while I'm there, too, to further my quest to obtain Wizardry.
Thanks fa/g/s

>it's going to be all remote support
you should have taken the "be there physically to fix stuff" job.
Are you suicidal? This is important.
>>59728749
I didn't get a chance for the 'physically exist to touch computer parts' stuff, this was the only job that was offered.
Is it really that bad? I really assumed it was a meme. I mean it's got to be better than a lot of other jobs, and it's something that you pass through onto bigger and better stuff.
>>59728819
Tech support jobs are thankless hell-jobs. You will be abused by customers. You will be abused by coworkers. You will be abused by management. You will be considered shit-tier and barely human. You will never be able to do the right thing. And you will never be able to do enough for anyone.
Seriously, go work for Starbucks or something. The only job you are qualified for after working in tech support are other tech support jobs.

Hey /g/, recently I took apart an old copy machine that I found and one of the things I got out of it was this stepper motor. I'm definitely not an electronics expert, but I've been trying to learn more and get into tinkering recently.
How would I go about utilizing this motor, and the 5 pin connector? I have a raspberry pi I can use as a controller but how do I go about connecting the two? Also can anyone tell me what the pins are for based on the labels? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
>>59727829
most stepper motors from my experience only have 4 wires but its possible that the stepper motor you have is different. first step would probably be to figure out the model of the stepper motor along with the wire configuration of the pins. what I can tell you though is that most stepper motors work with PWM so once you you figure out the correct pin you just send a high and low current through it to. though i recommend getting a motor controller to make your life easy in terms of setting direction, and the type of PWM that you want to send.
>>59729391
Well I was assuming since the motor is already attached to a circuit board, wouldn't that most likely already be a motor controller of some kind, or am I wrong?
>>59729634
Nah you're right so my best advice would be to see if you can find the data sheet for that motor. but if you cant find one i would recommend attach digital pins to the three pins not specified as voltage or ground and just send some rapid high and low voltages through them though i dont think a raspberry pi has a pin with 24v so you would have to find the power source for it somewhere else. but the code should be easy to implement after a few raspberry pi tutorials
Anyone able to recommend decent computer speakers? Been using pic related for many many years now and the right speaker is starting to go in and out at times.
Budget is around $100.
$150 max.
Obviously I'm not looking for anything incredible, just something decent for my budget.
micca mb42x is as good as it gets
Link to current speakers if anyone's curious.
They're fine for a small computer station/if you're in a small room. Has like...fake bass or something. Sounds ok.

Microsoft doesn't exactly care about developing in asm. They just expect you to build everything with their compilers

still, wouldn't that be a bitch to work with if you're the one responsible for developing the os?

Is anyone else overjoyed that H1B Pajeets have been banned? Spare me the pedantry about details ShariaBlue.
This is the #1 reason I shilled for Trump during the election, and I'm not even American. Canadians have other visas to access the US with, and our wages will not be driven down by Pajeets anymore. Of course, our cuck government will double down on our equivalent of H1B, which is why I am leaving this fucking country permanently after I graduate.

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Why don't we push for a moon base first instead of memeing with the almost impossible (for now) mars?
It seems "easily" achievable right now.
no mineable resources on the moon. not worth it to corporate funders.
People would wanna mine helium.
There would be disputes over who owns the mined helium.
Possible war.
We already got a bunch on the moon
