Found this snake in my yard, I live in southern Florida. Any ideas what type of snake it might be? And if it's venomous or not?
>>2312010
Garter snake, it looks like. Things are totally harmless. I grabbed these things up all the time as a kid and played with them, so they're quite docile. Let the dude go on about his business. I don't think there's any snakes native to FL with round pupils that are venomous, so that's how i've always checked. Could be wrong, though, and there's a shitload of non-native snakes in south florida.
Very Deadly Florida Bucket Snake.

On January 31st we had to put our old lady down( pitbull, female), within a day she had lost so much weight and grew some huge tumor?on her right side and putting her down was something that had to be done. Of course it still breaks my heart so much, seconds after they had injected her she was gone, my pretty girl was tired.
Share your stories/pictures and maybe some (sad) songs.

Sorry for your loss.
Is this the same pit that got attacked by the shitty bulldog?

Yes :(
hey /an/ ive been getting into moths lately, does anyone have any experience in keeping one? is it a good idea? where do you get one? how do i keep it happy? what are some options in western canada?
post qt moths also
they generally don't live very long as adults or take well to captivity as adults. how do you feel about caterpillars?
>>2311740
I used to keep moths as a child. My cat would rip them to shreds so I'd take care of them until they died. Keep in mind this was before the internet was as grand as it is today, so I highly suggest looking up how to care for one.
I kept them in a small critter keeper with some fauna. They couldn't fly because cat. To feed them I'd make a water/sugar mix. I'd add sugar and taste test it - if I didn't gag from the amount of sugar, I needed to add more sugar. Then I dipped a paper towel or napkin in the solution and let them at it. I did this at least 2x a day. Life spans varied as I didn't get them from caterpillars and the extent of their damage also played a part. I had one moth that I did get as a caterpillar that I kept in a cage too small and permanently fucked his wings when he hatched. He lived about 5-6 months. He was a fucking giant
Whenever I noticed a moth not eating for a day or more, he was exiled outside in an attempt to let them fuck before they died.

Also you're really getting into caterpillar rearing. Saturniids (silkmoths, the pretty ones) do not have mouths and only emerge as adults to mate and die.
The other major rearing family, Sphingidae, may be more rewarding but you should only rear local species because they have a chance of escaping
>family dog is sick
>my parents take him to a vet
>has some sort of skin infection
>get some medicated shampoo and have to give him these antibiotic injections
>supposed to give him bath once a day with it for a week
>parents don't want to deal with bathing him
>parents too afraid of hurting him with needle
>I try to do it but have no idea what I'm doing and afraid I'm going to fuck something up
>younger sister is a vet tech who lives out of state
>she tries explaining to me how to do it over the phone
>absolutedisaster.jpg
>she ends up using some vacation time to come visit and help us out with him
>she gives him the shots like it's nothing
>she's giving him the medicated bath and walking me through how to do it
>infection is all over his stomach and dick so she has to make sure to shampoo there
>she just starts nonchalantly rubbing shampoo all over his genital are
>"um... shouldn't you use gloves or a brush or something?"
>"what? Anon, it's not a big deal. You just lather him up down there and rinse after letting it sit"
>"but you're touching his dick, doesn't that weird you out?"
>no, not really. It's just another body part"
now not only do I feel absolutely useless next to my sister, but kinda creeped out. Wouldn't most people find touching dog dick to be weird? I can't be the only one
It's no different than bathing your new born baby. Don't be a pussy OP, help your dogbro out. It's not like you're jerking him off, you're getting rid of an infection that makes him uncomfortable.
>Wouldn't most people find touching dog dick to be weird?
Well yeah, if you're just bored on a Saturday night, sure that would be weird.
Given the context however it was something that had to be done. The dog can't do it, so as a responsible owner you gotta do what you gotta do. Just remember it's for the dogs health, and try to look at it as a belly rub with a happy ending. No big deal.

It's like changing a baby's diapers OP. You really should be embarrassed your sister had to take time off to perform a couple of menial tasks.
My pug has had slow head bobbing tremors and lacks balance/coordination when walking, pic is unrelated (from a while back) currently she's 6 months old, please help me.
>>2311506
Sounds like a case of take her to the fucking vet. It's a common disease among pugs but easy to treat if you take her to the fucking vet, you twat.
Sounds like that disease where their brain is too big for their skull and causes them neurological issues/pain
get ready for the vet bills for them to crack your pug's head open to fix it. hope getting a suffering meme breed was worth it
Probably common for deformed dogs like a pug.
Who here is watching puppy bowl? This shit is adorable.
Yes.

I've been offered a 2 year old Alaskan Malamute for £150 (micro chipped and has vaccines)
I am a 6'0, 210lbs man with an active life style, I could easily tire that huge pupper out every day.
I've never owned a pupper before though, and this may not be a good idea.
What do I need to know before decoding on adopting a malamute?
Tell me everything!

They're powerful, but also independent and stubborn. You've got to set rules and stick to them, no matter what. From the moment the dog comes home with you, it will attempt to train you to do what it wants. If you let that happen, you'll have a big, bossy, noisy, destructive animal.
However, with patience and an equal amount of stubbornness the dog will respect you, trust you and you'll have an awesome companion. You just gotta be prepared to put the work in.
Get ready to brush, brush, brush. But yeah, training and exercise is mandatory, like any large breed.
Why does my dog whine everytime I go over and kneel down near it? This usually happens when it has a toy, but while whining it wags its tail even if it acts sort of meek
>>2311200
Tail wagging isn't a sign of joy, its a sign of strong emotion. Don't be fooled by a dogs tail. Pay closer attention to their body language and facial movement.
If your dog is whining, it may just be submitting to you. Is the dog new to you or young?
Sometimes, people can startle animals simply by the way they approach it. the typical way people try to pet a dog is by bending at the waist (pic related). This makes you loom over them. spoopy. its best to squat down and get closer to their level (personal mobility permitting).
Has your dog been around many other dogs? Sometimes a dog simply doesn't know how to properly emote. My sisters dog went 2 years without seeing another dog and tries to meow sometimes, imitating her cat. Your pupper may just be trying to play.
Best of luck anon, to you and your pupper.

Anyone have experience with culturing these things? I find them fascinating. Biologists seem to be more experienced with cultivating single-strain algae on agar and then propagating them from there.
But this means the complex interactions between cyanobacteria, diatoms, algae, sulfurous bacteria etc never get documented formally. The best I've been able to find are field excursions reports in salt marshes.
>>2310524
like most marine aquarists I'm great at culturing these things.
we try really hard to get rid of them, that's probably why they're so easy to grow.
anyways all you need is a saltwater tank with reef lighting, no filtration, poor water movement, a deep sandbed, tons of nutrients, warm water, and a long photoperiod. They pretty much grow themselves.
Bump for interest
>>2310537
would it be self sustaining? Or would you need some rotten fish or something in there too?
What would win in a fight in 3 feet of water.
Grizzly Bear or Great White Shark?
How the hell is a great white gonna swim in three feet of water?

hows a bear going to be super mobile in 3 feet of water?
>>2310491
still more mobile than a shark
Why don't birds/reptiles/fish get prion diseases?
>>2310435
Well what do birds/reptiles/fish all have in common?
They all fucked your mom!
we wouldn't know it if they did.
>>2310435
only faggots get prion and it's a well documented fact that the only faggot here is OP
I live on rented appartment in Finland. A service man entered my home with out permission. My 35+kg dog attacked the man and tore out part of his hand.
Now i wonder how fucked my dog is...
Should i hide him to my relatives?
I don't know what the laws are like in Finland, but if they're anything like in the US, yes, hide the dog.
In the US, the landlord generally has the right to enter the apartment (and give servicemen the right to enter the apartment) whenever he damn well pleases, but it's simply polite to give notice.
Read your renter's agreement. If it were me, I'd hide the dog and say I got rid of it.
>>2310354
in finland we have very strict home protection laws (thou we are not allowed to shoot people :D)
>service man broke the law by using the key
I will now hide the dog just in case
When your dog smiles at you do you feel it's genuine or do you put it more in the sociopathic simulacrum category?
Static dog smile is ball python tier, it's in your head only - they pant to regulate their temperatures and the shape of the upper lip is a breed-related thing. But them opening and closing mouths in excitement would count as a genuine smile I think.
>>2310197
But my dog does a closed lip smile every time a i rub her ears while she's lying down
>>2310186
It can be happiness, yes, but It can also be a submissive grin, a sign of stress, or your dog is just hot. Like most mannerisms in us and dogs, it's dependent on context and the way it's being done.
What's with this guy? Is he gonna die or turn to a cocoon?
How do I help this little guy now?
Make him use harden. He should evolve.
Make sure the pupa is in a safe and wide open container. If the butterfly hatches in too tight an area the wings might not unfurl properly and it could end up crippled. Don't plan to keep it in that jar is what I'm saying. Get something sizeable like those butterfly rearing net cages you see for school science projects for example.
>>2310117
Do you need to have the correct plant in the jar for a caterpillar to turn into a cocoon?
I know Monarchs only consume milkweed.
