Are these any animals that have senses that humans don't?
I know some birds can see ultraviolet light but that's about it.

echolocation of bats
migratory birds navigating through the earth's magnetic field
lateral lines of fish/amphibians

that's pretty cool mane
the mantis shrimp or whatever it's called can see colors we've never seen.

Animals should not be needlessly killed.
Humans are of moral value.
There is no trait absent in animals which if absent in humans would justify the murder/exploitation of that human.
Therefore, we cannot deem animals as not having moral value, thus damning billions of them to lifelong torture and eventual murder.
No, the fact that we eat the animals does not justify murder. Meat is not needed and expensive to farm.
Fight me

What's wrong with you guys?

no. agriculture ruins ecosystems.
Look at this stupid face and laugh!

I've never heard of these before!
Hey, an,
I adopted a 4 month old puppy and everything's great. I'm just curious about something.
My eldest dog went through a false pregnancy recently after her spay and ever since has displayed motherly behavior toward the pup. The pup, having been abandoned/taken too early, eats it up because she loves the attention.
So my question is simply, do these two or dogs in general, have any concept when they are or are not related?
Pic related
>>2321947
Dogs always adopt anything or can be adopted by anything. Doesn't even matter if the adopter/ee isn't a dog.
>>2321952
But is there a marked difference in behavior between dogs that are directly related, like litter-mates, and dogs that 'adopt' each other?
>>2321962
Probably not, at least not in the same way you or I think of it
Do I have bedbugs? Found this little guy when I woke up today. Doesn't really look like a bedbug to me but I wanted a second opinion
That's just a black beetle
>>2320679
bed bugs aren't that big, they're like 0,10 inches
Name a more evolutionarily perfect animal
>>2315108
They're chubby and cute
>>2315108
>Oldest living specie
You have already lost
>>2315108
Tardigrades aren't even extremophiles.
They are only resistant when they are in a dessicated dormant state. They can't actually live in anything but damp moss. There are many other species with much wider ranges of environments they can live in.
Thoughts on keeping pigs as pets?
Only if you actually have real land and are willing to take care of them after they stop being cute
>>2322282
Don't pigs go "crazy" after a certain age/size and *really* need a lot of land?
Hi! my girl took this picture and we wondered what our dogs might be saying or thinking. What ideas do you got?? The dog giving me a paw is Morena, and the dog looking at the camera is Chiqui. Thx!!!
Where the fuck do these normies come from treating /an/ like it's instagram or facebook? I swear only /an/ has this problem. I don't know who the fuck told you /an/ was going to caption your shitty picture for you but they were wrong. Go back to r/thirdworldshithole, Jose.
>>2321382
we need more animal rekt threads bro to keep those normies out

Younger one is a normie, older one says get the fuck off our board you normie faggot

Why does nobody use potassium chloride (KCl) to instantaneous stop an animals heart?
It is extremely cheap and as safe to eat as table salt, but when a tiny amount is injected it causes cardiac arrest.
>>2320519
it's extraordinarily painful
this is a problem from animal welfare perspectives
but it's also a problem for slaughterhouses since animals in pain thrash around and break things
also it's not as cheap as a bolt gun
Do they have to inject it into the heart? If so that would be agony. Imagine the size and thickness of a needle that would be needed for a cow, especially when it's squirming and thrashing.
Bolt guns kill instantly.
>>2320519
Because cardiac arrest isn't "instantaneous" and is painful. For welfare reasons you would have to render an animal unconscious before injection.
On top of that you have to use quite a bit, for a dairy cow Iowa vet quotes 120ml (with a saturated solution of 340g/l), across two 60ml syringes into a vein using 14/16 gauge needles.
So whilst it does not have to be injected into the heart, it's painful and to put it simply as >>2320522 said- a bolt gun, or even a simple knife is a cheaper, easier option.
My dogs' water bowl is a bitch to clean. It's a Drinkwell Bigdog automatic water bowl, so it has a little engine that circulates water, and that means it has a whole fucking lot of little corners and deep places that are nearly impossible to reach with just a dish scrubber. Anyone else have a similar issue? Can anyone recommend a scrubber that can get into the tight corners or down into the recesses?
Also, pet care hardware general to keep this thread from being a single question.
>>2322233
I hate to be that guy but just use a fucking regular bowl and rinse/refill it a few times a day as needed.
>>2322235
I'd rather clean one difficult thing once a week than keep up with something all the time. Just how my mind works I guess. My wife and I did the regular bowl for a while but neither of us had the presence of mind to keep up with filling and cleaning it. The automated bowl lets us just clean it once when we have a day off.
>>2322233
I thought about buying one of those and now I'm glad I didn't. My dog produces so much slobber when she drinks that her bowl gets slimy. I run it through the dishwasher nightly on the hottest setting.
A few hours ago my cat got spayed. Now she's doing this thing where she sticks her tongue out constantly (not licking her lips, just sticking it out as if she had a bad taste in her mouth). Could it be dehydration? She's still pretty shaken and doesn't want water
>>2322008
No. Leave her alone. She's still technically recovering from the drugs and anesthesia.
She's still drugged.
Cats don't get dehydrated in a span of a few hours.
even if she was NPO last night for surgery today, if she was eating and drinking normally before then, she's fine.
>>2322017
Ok, thank you anon. I was mostly worried since it's very hot outside today. I'll let her be for a good couple of hours and then check how she's doing. I do hope she calms down in time for her painkillers
>>2322029
If you are worried, ring your vets. We would rather you rang us and even asked what you perhaps think is a silly question to calm your mind than you not contact us at all and something major goes wrong.
Are these tumors? Very old cat, her butt and backside are really sensitive also, might be related? Does anyone know?
Sorry about my fat thumb in the picture.
ye
Bring it to the vet
>>2321837
>Can you diagnose these lumps with a shitty picture and no other information?
Take your cat to a vet. Why the fuck do you think we can tell you whether or not they're tumors? A veterinarian couldn't even tell just based on looking at it.
What's some good ways to mix up dog meals without harming digestion? The food I like to buy has three flavors, so I was thinking of buying all three bags for each meal: lamb breakfast, fish lunch, chicken dinner. Is that switching it up to often? Is cheddar cheese OK to mix in if it's small quantities?
>>2321420
Mix it with wet food. I always mix my dogs dry food with a good amount of wet food, mostly because my older dog has no teeth (brachy breed, go figure) and is very picky. I also add dog-friendly tablescraps like shitty cuts of meat on occasion, but if your dog has a sensitive tummy I wouldn't recommend that.
Also... why cheese? I mean, sure it's fine in small quantities, but why's cheese your first option? I don't think it's harmful even in bigger qualities -- recently had an elderly couple bring in a senior pug who was fed exclusively cheese and sausage every day for its entire life because "he just doesn't really like dog food, you know?" It was obese as hell, obviously, but as alive as an 8 y/o pug can be.
You could try adding canned fish as a topper. Not anchovies, because they're high in salt, or tuna or salmon, because of toxic metals, but something like canned herring?
Also, as long as your dog has something of an iron gut, then switching food for each meal shouldn't be an issue. Even then an iron gut isn't required, as long as they're used to a large degree of daily dietary variation. My dogs are rarely fed the same food two meals in a row. They don't even necessarily eat the same brand of food two meals in a row. But then, I rotate between about 15 different foods from different brands and always have a minimum of three on hand.
I'm thinking about raising a magpie from egg. Do you have any advices?
How much care does it need? (Im home officed, so I have plenty of time.)
Can I let it out when its older? Will it come back?
Can I teach it to not shit everywhere?
You'll have a better time just putting out bird feeders and attracting a flock to your yard. Keep up the free food and you will have plenty making regular visits. They can get pretty friendly if you hang out near the feeders and try to handfeed them.
Oh, also you now have sparrows, robins, chickadees, nuthatches, and crows making visits too. Depending on where you live.
they are intelligent birds and most of their behavior is learned
this is a huge issue since when puberty kicks in they get the desire to pair up, and leave with their bond for life, but a bird who is badly socialised will most likely die outside
if you raise it from a very young age it will be sexualy attracted to people and try to romance a person, again putting itself in danger
>>2321328
Ive done that, but Im really interested in the process of a magpie growing up and learning.
>>2321335
Yes, this pairing up sounds like a problem. Does all the corvidae has this behaviour?
I find it improbable that it would be sexually attracted to a person. Magpies can recognize themselves in mirrors, so they must have a sense of self.
Maybe Ill reconsider raising one, I dont want to be cruel or anything. But I wanna be sure that there are objective problems in raising it.
