I'm thinking about raising a magpie from egg. Do you have any advices?
How much care does it need? (Im home officed, so I have plenty of time.)
Can I let it out when its older? Will it come back?
Can I teach it to not shit everywhere?

You'll have a better time just putting out bird feeders and attracting a flock to your yard. Keep up the free food and you will have plenty making regular visits. They can get pretty friendly if you hang out near the feeders and try to handfeed them.

Oh, also you now have sparrows, robins, chickadees, nuthatches, and crows making visits too. Depending on where you live.

they are intelligent birds and most of their behavior is learned
this is a huge issue since when puberty kicks in they get the desire to pair up, and leave with their bond for life, but a bird who is badly socialised will most likely die outside
if you raise it from a very young age it will be sexualy attracted to people and try to romance a person, again putting itself in danger

Ive done that, but Im really interested in the process of a magpie growing up and learning.

Yes, this pairing up sounds like a problem. Does all the corvidae has this behaviour?
I find it improbable that it would be sexually attracted to a person. Magpies can recognize themselves in mirrors, so they must have a sense of self.

Maybe Ill reconsider raising one, I dont want to be cruel or anything. But I wanna be sure that there are objective problems in raising it.

It is something that happens to other corvids, and parrots, starlings. I don't know if it is a thing in magpies or not, but since birds imprint it probably is.

A corvid is hardly the place to start if you're interested in a pet bird. They are highly intelligent and will require far more interaction than you realize. Most live for decades and are about as intelligent as a toddler, so unless you are willing to deal with a perpetually destructive child (who has a beak, and also gets horny all the time) then you should seriously reconsider.

Furthermore, like most birds they are flock animals, which means that they typically live in large groups and are constantly surrounded by others of their own kind. A single human will have an incredibly difficult time fulfilling the same social role as 20-30 other birds.

No, you cannot let it out. If raised by humans, they won't learn the various means of communicating and interacting with their own species, and releasing it would be a death sentence. It will NEVER be accepted by other birds, and it won't know how to forage for itself, or deal with winter, or deal with predators. If it was smart it would come back to you, since that's the only way it would survive.

Technically you CAN teach them not to shit everywhere, but it would be incredibly difficult and I wouldn't even know where to start. Birds have it pretty hard wired into their brain to just shit wherever they are at the time, so uh, good luck.

Oh yeah, they totally do become attracted to people. or specifically just their hands sometimes. Yes they can recognize themselves, but like I said before they are extremely social, and if not raised by other birds they get all fucked in the head and start doing really weird shit. Like humping peoples hands to the point of rubbing their feathers off. And all birds will do this, not just corvids.

Also, depending on where you live it may be illegal to own a magpie.
