Look at pictures online of what animal looks good to you, look up obedience training, etc.

I would be wary of poodles, doberman pinschers, and Rottweilers but even they can be good pets if their trained properly.

Except pit bulls, I have had one turn rogue one me for no reason scared me shitless, so the humane society took him off my hands.

GSDs are typically not a good fit for new or even novice owners. Echoing what >>2428148 said.

Have you considered looking at shelters or even breed specific rescues in your area? Have you looked into breeds of dogs that are "easy" for new/inexperienced dog owners? Those would be some good places to start your research!

An adult, already properly trained german shepherd is a good companion, though. But you would still have to invest enormously into him. Really not recommended for a first pet.

Why are greyhounds usually really friendly? Are they bred to be like this and if yes, why? What has being friendly to do with going fast?

I beg to differ, becoming a foster care or even a legal custodian parent in this day and age is easier then adopting a dog from a rescue. Social workers and the law (and unfortunately sometimes to the detriment of the child) give you literally every leeway to hold custody so the state can do whatever it can to not take on a ward.

Some of these dog rescues will still hold title to the animal. Why the fuck would I adopt from a rescue when they could (and have in certain instances) legally take your pet away because some fat SJW shelter worker thought your political views count as animal abuse.

My small terrier mix dog would constantly kill snakes that got into the yard, some of them venomous. I nicknamed her Rikki-Tiki-Tavi because of that.

i have a trickster for a dog

he's a small miniature pinscher type thing who doesn't love the water. he once pretended to enjoy swimming so he could get us way far out from the shore, then turned around and bolted back to the beach and ate all the picnic food while we slowly ran back through the water yelling and trying to stop him
