I want to eventually construct a koi pond in my backyard, and I would like to have a turtle to go with it. My only concern is that I live in Maryland, so the turtle cannot be out year round, and I am a little worried about the fish in the pond as well.
Is there really any truth to when I'm told that a pond that is deep enough with enough water flow will keep the fish alive without needing food? Will a turtle stay healthy for the winter inside with a 50 gallon tank, heaters, etc. by a window? And do turtles do well in isolation, meaning do I have to get a play mate for the turtle so it doesn't get depressed?
I also read that turtles may nip at the fins of koi fish, so is a koi pond with turtles even humane in /an/'s opinion?

Koi can hibernate if you prepare accordingly.

About the indoor keeping: First off, 50 gal won't suffice for an adult. A RES for example is gonna need 100+ gal, smaller species still around 70. If you're keeping it heated indoors it'll probably take quite some time until your pond is warm enough for it to be reintroduced, which will probably lead to it being kept more indoors than outdoors, dunno how much that would bother you. You can also hibernate them in a fridge. I don't know how harsh the winters are there, but there's probably also species that could hibernate well outdoors, fridge is definitely safer though.

Turtles are perfectly fine alone. Keeping male + female for instance will just lead to the male constantly bothering the female, trying to mate.

Turtles can definitely be assholes. I wouldn't be able to keep my yellow slider female with any fish. I'd suggest smaller species like a musk turtle or a male map turtle.

I actually didn't even think to look into native species.

So, I don't usually browse /an/ but I'm guess you guys are the people to ask. I was out in my backyard cleaning up when I found this little grubby thing near one of my tree stumps I haven't dug out yet. Anyone have any idea what it is or what kind of bug it turns into?

I live in Northern Ohio if that helps at all.

Can anyone identify this? The tree itself first gave just this summer, whereas past summers it was maturing. It took about a month and a half this time around for it to get to this point

Reverse image search gives me Persian lime but that's definitely a no-no. Geographic location is Southern Ontario if that helps narrow down the search.

Definitely has a nutty smell, but hints of citrus in there too, the insides were stiff hard whites with juices around them, and a half-a-centimeter shell of.. something. (Similar to an avocado's structure, minus the giant seed in the middle)

The white center looked like it was developing a scatter of tiny seeds as well

Thanks in advance!

So my "dog friendly" landlords are trying to evict me from my apartments because I have a dog that exceeds their 30 pound weight limit by like 20 pounds. I already attempted to pay a pet deposit and even offered to pay more but they won't budge and now either my dog leaves or I do. There are dogs twice his size living in my apartment complex
What do?

In general pit bulls and other "aggressive breeds" are the very reason they have those limits. They don't care about the weight, they care about the breed. If the dog doesn't fall under the specified rules either don't get it or move somewhere where it's allowed. Why is that so hard for people to understand?

Although there are plenty of laws out there protecting a tenant from the landlord for doing truly fucked up things this particular situation boils down to one thing.

It's the landlord's property. If he doesn't want you on it you have to go. Pointing at your neighbors dog and going "BUT HE HAS ONE WHY CAN'T I?!" isn't going to help. It might be worth sitting down with the landlord and having a civil discussion about it but that's about as much as you can do. If he doesn't want you there, you have to go.
>>
>>2435809
Did you sign something that agreed to no dogs over 30 lbs? or was it later dropped on you? did you know about any weight limit beforehand? Take a look at your contract before you begin to cry foul. Also if you're positive there are bigger dogs living in the apartments, let your landlord know about the other people breaking the rules, and ask why they can go scott free. If it's something where the weight limit wasn't announced anywhere, and they didn't ask to see your pet beforehand, you might have a case but all it would do would compensate you for your time and money spent on the place where you can't live. I've actually seen this happen a lot with slum lords, they will suddenly put up a pet ban, or somehow single out a tenant's animal because they don't like the tenant, and they can evict them and keep the month's rent, 6 months rent, 1 year rent, however much they have to pay upfront AND rent it out to somebody else. But I am assuming that your landlord is not that much of a slumlord.

If it's a breed thing, you can bring the dog to a vet and get them to say it's a boxer/english spaniel mix. The vets really don't give a fuck. I think for the breed to official, you have to get it a rabies vaccine and a license under that breed mix. If that isn't going to fix it, you can go hard core and pretend you're crazy. Go to a therapist, tell them you're a mess without your dog, you'll need the therapist to give you a referral to a psychiatrist who will give you a 'prescription' for a dog. That makes your dog an Emotional Support Animal. All ESAs give you is a clause in the Fair Housing Act. In the FHA, it states that landlords have to attempt to accommodate the ESA animal, IF AND ONLY IF your ESA animal isn't a nuisance.

I've been in a similar boat so I understand what you're going through, It sucks because even though what slumlords do isn't legal, even if you had the money for a lawyer it wouldn't be worth it because you'd still need a place to live

Hey /an/ons, I need some advice. This bee got into my house and seemed like it was dying. After seeing it still alive after a couple of hours, i thought it might recover and gave it some sugar water, which it drank quite a bit of.

It definitely regained vitality, but it seems unable to fly. It's walking around and buzzing, but when it tries to fly it just rolls on its back.
The wings seem alright to me but I'm not sure.

You think my bee friend has got a chance? I'm letting it rest right now in an open box.

The wings look pretty bent and broken to me, OP. Even if it managed to crawl its way back to the hive, it would be pretty useless as a worker.
It's actually quite tragic.

So I've been reading about crate training. To be honest I still don't really understand how this works... Basically you leave your dog crated while you're away?
Lets say I'm not at home for 8 hours a day. I can train the dog to "like" being locked up in a crate for that long?
Sounds good because they don't get to destroy your house and potentially even harming themselves or eat something they're not supposed to, but I have a hard time convincing myself that it's not cruel.

>>
>>2435528
Basically they see the crate as a den and they feel safe, at least that's what I get from my limited knowledge of dog psychology.
>>
"Crates" (let's be real, its a cage) are good for short term confinement if you have a destructive or anxious dog and need to go somewhere and leave the dog at home.

The trick is to train them to associate it with being "their den", blankets over it, food, rewards and so on. If your dog sleeps in it at night with the gate open that helps too.

Please do not leave your dog in it for 8 hours though, particularly if it is hot or they get distressed.

*fragments your habitat*
Is veganism really better for the planet if it means more development just to produce protein?
You CAN make a wildlife friendly cattle fence, but development just takes from already diminishing natural habitats. You can't share the range with crops and wildlife like you can cattle imo

Buffalo farms are actually coming back in style, although we won't be seeing a lot of meat in super markets for another 5-10 years. Also switching to a mainly insect diet instead of beef, pig and cow is better economically and environmentally
>>
>>2435243
The one thing I don't like about bison farms is that they're going to fragment habitat worse since they need at least a six foot fence. Pronghorn and deer might be able to crawl under fence but fucking elk and moose won't
>>
>>2435219
>barbed wire

It amazes me how many people use it incorrectly. All the cattle fences in my area are single strand of multi-fiber plastic that has tiny thing strands of metal wire woven into them. Then it has enough electric running through them to literally knock you out cold on your ass. Deer just jump over it.
