For me to make a judgement call on someone in such a situation I probably look at a couple factors:

>How wealthy the person is
>How old the pet is
>The quality of life the pet would have after the procedure

If it isn't a substantial financial burden on someone and their pet had another 5+ potential years of life and we're just like "Fuck it, put it down" then I can imagine they had no real love for their pet and thus I'd probably consider them a cold or detached person who shouldn't really have a pet (or kids for that matter).

At the moment I literally could not afford a $1000 treatment for either my cat or dog who are both above 10 years. If something came up, I would at the very least try begging on one of those fundraiser sites (I feel like sick animals get clicks but there are a lot of needy people I guess). If that didn't work I'd be distraught to put them down but I wouldn't feel guilty as I gave them 10 years of care and affection, plus I don't consider going into debt for your pet some kind of moral responsibility.

I feel like this is part of planning before getting a pet. If I'm going to take on an animal I'm going to be prepared for the commitment. If spending more than $1000 will give it good quality of life for years to come then yes. I wouldn't spend several thousands just to give a terribly sick, old, pet an extra painful week of existence. Of course it depends on your situation.

How about you read up how to actually take care of a skink correctly before you think about enriching his life? At the moment it sounds like you treat it like a dog with scales.

Try to get basic care right first. And no, a simple care sheet is not enough, do some actual reading.

Also with that knowledge you will know how you can enrich his life (mainly diet, they don't need or want much stimulation).

I've read mainly from care sheets found online, but don't know what other resources are out there to be a better owner. I've never been acquainted to a reptile until my SO brought him into my life, so I haven't really formed any instincts on how to care for them in terms of affection.

My SO just tells me Apone doesn't need much and that the canned dog food works great because it's made for omnivores, but I'd like to attempt to be a better owner at least.

It may not be only from fleas. If he is creating or dinking from plastic, the bacteria infesting it could also cause this. My cat used to be mangy looking and scabby with cat acne and switching to glass or metal solved this.

Or he developed kitty OCD. I also had a cat with that and she licked her tail so much it fell off.

I had an issue with an itchy dog.

Turns out he has a pretty aggressive bacterial infection that needed antibiotics. I had to bathe him three times a week. He has a check up tomorrow

Pitbulls can be good dogs if trained properly and have an experienced owner handling them. The problem is that most owners of Pitbulls don't actually know what they're getting into, such as Pitbulls needing tons of exercise because a Pitbull which hasn't had enough to do becomes aggressive and bored. Yes, the dogs have the capacity of great violence, but so do many other dog breeds. I'm not saying you should buy one though, and I personally believe that many Pitbull owners should have their dogs taken away, because they don't know what they're doing and will make the dog a threat to everyone around them.
