Why are greyhounds usually really friendly? Are they bred to be like this and if yes, why? What has being friendly to do with going fast?

I used to go to a micro pub in Nottingham called Doctor's Orders.
Some guy used to just loose his greyhound on the room.
The dog would then go around and neatly say hello to everyone. Greyhounds and whippets so Goddamn cute.

I had an ibizian hound and she was such a source of happiness, it was unreal.

I also fondly remember the "standoffs" where we stared each other down, she tilting her head a bit, head up while staring and slowly morphing the lips for a deep "woof". she especially liked to do this when trying to get my attention for walkie time.

I still think it's really interesting how different long hounds behave to the average other dog breeds. sometimes it feels like they're something else and not dogs.

Are Greyhounds the best larger dog breed for beginners?

Generally I rate Boston Terriers for medium to small dog breeds as best.

I've been hearing more and more about how greyhounds are calm, low energy, do well in suburban/ urban areas, affectionate, non-aggressive, not to mention easy to get fully trained (retired racers,) but I rarely see them brought up in discussions like this

A quick question for people who have an Italian Greyhound, not sure if these two mix but this seemed like a good place to ask.

My roommates rescued an Italian Greyhound and this animal is super skittish. It kinda wants to be nice but it being so skittish stops it, along with another dog they own. They keep saying that the breed is just like this but greyhounds are supposed to be friendly and I can't see that really as true or something. This also might be a case of shitty owners.

Can I get some advice on Greyhounds or other breed suggestions? I was considering getting one since my unidentifiable terrier mutt mix died about a year back.

For reference, I live in a medium-sized apartment with a roommate with a small (enclosed) yard with a 4ft high fence. The dog would be home alone for 8 hrs 4 days a week (though hiring dog walkers is a possibility, if necessary.)

I can devote 1-2hrs per day training/exercising with said dog, and don't really go out on weeknights/weekends much anymore.

Also I enjoy taking my dog wherever I go (the occasional party, camping trip, and dogfriendly outdoor restaurant patio) so friendlieness and complacency would be preferred.

Taking this into account, I was considering getting something medium-small again (20-35 ilbs,) but I heard that Greyhounds are actually better than a lot of smaller dog breeds when it comes to complacency.

Yea, I kinda want a greyhound because I live in an apartment (lots of parks nearby and I have the ability to go out on walks multiple times a day), but they are pretty fuckin weird looking. Borzois are pretty, though, i think because of the coat. Would a greyhound mix be good too, you think? Pic related is what I found on google after searching 'greyhound mix' and it's so fucking goofy and cute I love it, I assume it's a boxer mix
>>
>>2427364
>thinks they look "pretty fucking weird"
>just wants one because he lives in an apartment

fucking get a chihuahua then
>>
>>2427367
>don't choose a dog breed because it's good for your situation
are you listening to yourself lmao

I don't want a little dog, I want a bigger dog that will be cool with living in an apartment. Greyhounds fit the bill, not to mention they are outgoing and intelligent. I don't really understand the problem with choosing a pet because its personality fits your situation. Sorry you're so buttblasted
>>
>>2427377
If you live in a tiny apartment you just don't get a dog, you get a cat.
Greyhounds have the stigma of being very calm and chill indoors and since you stated you don't like their looks you're probably just lazy and looking for a similarly lazy dog.

The problem people don't get: Greyhounds are running dogs
>>
>>2427446
The thing you don't understand: the dog will have plenty of room to run

I just don't want something ultra hyper like a border collie in an apartment. The place is plenty big enough for a dog, the only factor is that they won't be able to go out ANY time they want, like through a doggy door or something, because they'll need a human to take them downstairs to run. So yeah of fucking course I want something calm and chill indoors, take the stick out of your ass and stop acting like that makes people bad dog owners.

I don't know why you're so caught up on the fact I said that greyhounds are weird looking, like that makes a big statement about me or something. i get it, you like the way greyhounds look and that's cool. I just think that mixes are better looking than pure greyhounds.
>>
>>2427111
How do you think they make the dogs run in the race tracks? They take advantage of their prey drive.

Actually, the only non-retarded reason for getting a cat is for pest control if you live in a rural area. A cat is not a pet.
>>
>>2426581
>apartment
>large breed
Don't. Get a basset hound
>>
>>2427609
If you lived in a rural area, you'd know cats are retarded for pest control. They're just yard ornaments that only kill things on a whim, usually not even actual pests.

The best cats are better than the best dogs because they have all the good parts of a dog with the low maintenance of a cat, but your average dog >>>>>>average cat.

Low maintenance affectionate playful bro-tier cats are fucking great. But they're 1/100 at best. I've met like 2 in my life. Its funny, you see people treating cats like their children, but from the outside, its pretty obvious the cat hates them at worst, and holds them in complete contempt at best.

Most of the fuckers don't give a shit if you live or die. I fully agree that if it could, the average cat would eat its owner if it got bored.
>>
>>2427077
Greyhounds need a lot of space to run, or else they get destructive. Maybe the dogwalker thing would work, but only if the greyhound itself isn't skittish (most of them are).
>>
>>2428370
Yeah I've done a bit more research on them.

I'm starting to lean towards Boston Terrier. I've watched one who was a complete bro, and I can't seem to find many disadvantages to them. I'd be open to other breed suggestions too though.

Greyhounds may be generally chill and sleep in a lot, but they do need a lot of your attention: not only on training, but they also need to go out at least once a day for long periods of time somewhere where they can exercise, play, and run. Wouldn't recommend it senpai

If you want a shitty pet that will probably hold you in contempt, then yes, cats are low maintenance.
If you want to raise an actual bro-tier animal that won't scratch and bite you on a whim, then they need the same socialization that puppies get. But most cat owners are lazy pricks.
