I'm not a religious man but I would view it like this:

God created us as a science project essentially. He had his toys (angels and etc) who did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. (No free will).
So he got bored and wanted to essentially watch a giant cosmic TV show unfold. God gave humanity free will so he would be surprised by the outcome. While offering the ones who please him (do good, praise him etc) an entrance to join him in his world.
