The truth about succubi:

A long time ago when boys were supposed to be on the path of the holy, being sexually aroused was a big no-no because sex is bad and lewd thoughts are bad because god hates that stuff. The problem, though, is that when young men hit puberty, there's no stopping those hormones that are designed to keep the species from going extinct. Arright, the christian mythological one is easy: back in the day, people didn't know what wet dreams were, this during a time where chastity and purity were virtues, so waking up covered in your own jizz was a pretty scary thing. The story they made up? Succubi. Demons who would take the form of a beautiful woman an mount men in their sleep. As time went on and christian faith declined, the idea of a woman jumping your bones while you slept became less and less scary over time, so they started to tack vampiric characteristics onto the story. She's not just fucking you in your sleep, she's stealing your life force or your "vital" semen or you soul or energy or whatever.

Now, the problem with talking about "real succubi" is that succubus has become a catch all term for pretty much any female nonhuman entity that wants to fuck people (incubus for male entities), so when someone talks about encountering a succubus, they can be talking about a dozen different entities or even certain types of people. There are human looking energy vampires who steal energy through sex, there are totally human magical practitioners who take life force through ritual sex, there are plenty of predatory paranormal species who just want to fuck people before they murder/eat/enslave them, plus people tend to call the female of any species of demon a succubus. Hell, even some beings who aren't overtly sexual or predatory get labeled succubus. "Oh, you're not human but you want to fuck a person? AWAY, FOUL SUCCUBUS!!!"
