I discovered over the years that I don't like museums or architecture, I could not give a shit about taking pictures of famous buildings and nature is kinda lost on me. I rarely enjoy going abroad and I'm generally a boring, uninspired person.

However I really like dancing to trance music (no, I have never used psychotropic substances nor do I really care to try). Youtube has multiple videos of young attractive people dancing outdoors to psytrance in festivals around the world who seem to have fun, and since I have the money now and my vacations are bland I thought, "why the hell not? let's ask /trv/ someone must have been to one."

So, why not? Has anyone ever been to one? Where are they usually held? Would you recommend traveling abroad just to dance around people you don't know who are likely on psychotropics? Any famous locations I should know about?

I suppose I might be able to find one close, even in such a small country, but I thought traveling abroad for it, being around tourists from many different countries and being less easily recognized by someone would make it more special and let me have a better time. I don't know, it's all just a fantasy at the moment based solely on some videos I saw online this week, it might actually suck being there surrounded by smelly unwashed douchbags with glazed eyes, that why I thought I'd ask for some first-hand stories first.

Anyone?

Moving to Hong Kong next month from Eastern Europe. Will spend there about half a year. How is it? Any thoughts on the city? What should I do and see? Are there any beaches nearby that I could visit on weekends? Are they safe? Is there enough to do and see so I won't get bored?
I'm moving with my partner, we'll have around 30k HKD/month, do you think we'll manage? We'd like to rent a room preferably near Kowloon, go out for a drink sometimes, but nothing fancy, generally enjoy the experience.

I am planning a trip to Taiwan for roughly 5 weeks towards the end of the year (September/October) and was wondering if I could get some advice or if people could tell me whether this destination is for me before I book flights etc... I am in the very preliminary stages of planning. I am really wanting this to be a proper adventure rather than a standard holiday and really want to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.

I have been learning mandarin for a year or so in a night class and I feel like I know enough to get by in terms of getting from A to B and ordering food etc and my hope is from immersing myself in the culture I will have to either sink or swim and I will hopefully come out of it being able to speak a passable amount of mandarin. Is there enough English spoken in the country that I will likely get lazy and not do this?

Also, I would be very keen on hiring a scooter or motorbike for my time there. I am an experienced rider, however having seen roads in China/Vietnam I do believe it is pertinent to ask the question: is this a good idea and am I going to die?

I am also a bit of a loose unit and like to drink and get my groove on. I am typically a fan of the more 'dodgy' 3rd world kind of travel destinations where my kind of reckless behavior is not only not frowned upon, but encouraged. What is the drinking culture like in Taiwan? I am getting mixed results from the preliminary research I have done online. Honestly, it would be a bit of a deal breaker if I couldn't get a bit loose while I was there.

I am a first time poster in /trv/ so I apologize if I am breaking any of the boards etiquette.

Taiwan is not 3rd world, so there is more law and order.
>>
>>1257838
Yeah, this would definitely be the most developed country I have traveled to, other than my own. I guess the thing that concerns me the most is whether there are super strict drinking laws like... bars have to close at a certain time... if you look intoxicated you are not allowed to be served... you are not allowed to have straight drinks in certain licensed premises etc
>>
>>1257847
Don't worry about any of that. Taiwan is great

Hi /trv/, first time poster here.

I´m planning a trip by foot from Austria to Norway, and while I have the route and equipment basically ready I wanted to ask you guys if you had any tips, recommendations, experience with this sort of voyage.
Maybe my timespan is fucked, maybe I forgot some most important gear, I don´t know, I thought you guys were a good source for asking about this kind of stuff.

Info about the trip.
It´s going to start from Kitzbühel (Austria) to Hamburg, over Kopenhagen and will end in Oslo. I´m planning for around 6-8 months duration.

Info about me.
I´m 23, male, starting next year probably around April or May I don´t want to get into polar winter when fucking around in skandinavian swamps. I have military experience and gear for long by foot travel.

I´m also going to ask /k/ and /out/ which are two boards I haven´t used before too, yeah good times.

Thank you /trv/.

>TL;DR OP wants to go from Austria to Norway by foot and is asking for advice.

I plan on staying in some place or another for a while.
What would you suggest was a faster or more efficient way to go about?

Okay I fucked up

My flight home is 28 days away and Don't have enough money for the cheapest hostel even if it did have a vacancy.

I'm in London and need to survive 28 days. I've tried couch surf but they really only do one or 2 days.

I've been staying at an airport for 2 days but I'm worried they'll start recognising me and boot me out.

I was thinking of buying a tent and camping but I wouldn't know where to.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Floridian here, have traveled the whole state, plus 47 other states for perspective, so I like to think that I'm a good source on this.

Florida is the most diverse state. You've got every type of beach town you can imagine, from chill Pensacola to party Daytona, Disney and Universal, Orlando I drive, Orlando downtown, 2 party college towns in Tallahasse and Gainesville (I'd recommend Gainesville), Key West which is the highest drinking per person in the country, Hipster Riverside area in Jacksonville, Tampa (only been once), and Miami jews, cubans, hatians, and insane parties, and lots of rural country parts in between all this.

So it's tougher than usual to generalize about this state. I can say a few things.

The reason you hear about Florida in the news a lot isn't because we're more crazy than usual believe it or not. It's because we have Freedom of information laws that make it easy for lazy journalist to find something to use.

Most people in Florida are first or second generation. Very few people have roots in Florida going back very long.

Most people in Florida are very chill. Low intensity, don't get in a huff easily, and aren't gonna bother you if you're not bothering them. Close to the beach, people are very actively friendly and love to introduce themselves.

It's fucking hot and there's only 20 days a year that require a jacket.

If I had to pick just one place for a traveler to see, it'd be Miami. I was not expecting to be blown away by it, but I was. Too much to say about that city, both good and bad. Honestly though, I could go on and on on recommendations though.

Pensacola is nice. Not much to do but chill at the beach and eat good food, but if that's what you're looking for you'll enjoy it.

Oh yeah, and we're full.

Pensacola anon here

It's a small town made to feel like a large city. There is a very large military presence here and lots of retirees. The downtown has been neglected for years but a boom just recently hit which can be noticed by all of the buildings under construction, liberal yuppies, and revitalization/gentrification. The actual city doesn't cover a lot of ground and the skyline is lacking but there is endless suburban sprawl. You'll hear more southern slang and redneck accents than proper English. The main attraction, the beach, is a 20 minute drive away and is overflowing with people during the summers and weekends. Nightlife is meh. For some reason all the college age kids only attend 1-2 venues; Wild Greg's Saloon and Seville Quarter. The city has been working on street life and festivals so there will sporadically be activity going on. When it comes to the people, southern hospitality is evident. The city is like 30% black and there are no go zones. The city is trying hard to keep the feral blacks out of the downtown but the ACLU keeps sueing them. The police are cool too. Although being in Florida, Pensacola barely has any hispanics at all. I've noticed a huge influx in Muslims in the last 5 years too.

UWF, which I attend, is like a puppy mill school for degrees and feels like a giant community college. No sports teams, no student life, just nothingness. Surprised they call themselves a University. Not to mention the campus is full of hideous 60s and 70s buildings with a 66% shortage of parking spaces when the total numbers of students is taken into consideration.

Good thing about Pensacola is that you're in Florida. Bad thing about Pensacola is that you're a 10 hour drive away from real Florida.

Traveling with family/ tips on planning for groups.

Me and my family (3 over 50, 3 under 30) want to go to Italy next year and since I'm most used to traveling abroad the logistics and budgeting for the planning were left to me. I've never planned for so many people before, does anyone have tips on planning for groups vs planning solo? Any stories of traveling with family? I'm worried that with the age and income gap things might get troublesome.

1/2 before the trip

this last january i went to japan for 2 weeks with 7 family members (including me) ages 23 months to 67 years. i was the primary planner for most of the trip before and during.
>figure out who’s really going, and what everyone’s budget actually is
this can require some bluntness and questions that may be uncomfortable, but is critical. it affects where you stay and how long you stay. and until someone has a plane ticket, hope they’re going but assume they’re not really.
>keep everyone involved in planning
this is important both for what to plan, and to keep up enthusiasm for a distant trip. we’re fortunate that we live close to each other and have dinner together at least once a week allowing us to face to face, but with group texts and facebook and whatnot it’s easy to keep everyone in the loop. find out what activities are most important for people, and what they generally want to do. see if anyone wants to take over any specific aspect of the planning; for example a big part of my wife’s travel experience is good food, so I let her run with finding restaurants. and don’t be afraid to bug the shit out of people to find out what they really want. you know who in your family are people pleasers, keep beating them down until they admit that they really want to do something, or really don’t want to do something.

So ill be in Portugal for most of July. the first week and a half of my trip will be spent in Lisbon. Then Ill be off to the Algarve, and then inland to see some family. What are the best ways to get around? What are the best things to do for a 24 year old male traveling alone looking for a fun time?

Buses are comfy and cheap, look at the Rede Expressos site.
>What are the best things to do for a 24 year old male traveling alone looking for a fun time?
It depends on what you consider "fun". The Algarve is a normie tourist trap so you can drink until you pass out with lower class British package tourists at beach resorts if you like.
>>
Algarve is shit, as the other anon said. After Lisbon, you should visit Porto and then go inland.

I'm from Los Angeles. For a variety of reasons, I will probably need to move to the East Coast next year. I need to know if it's plausible to find a decent apartment in or near New York City or Boston for 1000 dollars per month. I know most people in those cities use public transit, so I'm fine if that's the price of living in the area. Also, does it get expensive to heat your apartment during winter? That's obviously not an issue over here.

>Iraq
>Iran
>Syria
>Turkey

>Jordan

Relatively safe, but culturally quite westernized
>UAE
>Kuwait
>Qatar
>Cyprus
>Israel?

Am I right or wrong? Any recommendations?

>>
Of those countries, I'd only place Syria, Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan is safe, though) and Yemen in the "too dangerous" category.

In some of the countries, like Egypt, you should just be aware that some areas are probably best not to visit, but the country as a whole is fine.
>>
Oh and Iran is among the safest of all the countries that you listed, probably safer than Israel as well
>>
>>1259027
Add Lebanon to safe and nice
Add Iran to safe and nice
Add Jordan to safe and nice

Egypt is a toss up. If you're not a relatively young and strong male it's to avoid all areas. As a male you can do Alexandria, good parts of Cairo and the Nile delta. Sharm is good, too, but a lot of caution needs to be taken in Sinai. Dahab is a hidden gem, you can go there from Israel/Jordan. There should be a ferry from Jordan to Nuweiba/Nabq.

It's a vital part of travel, but there is very little discussion about it

simple question, how does one get the cheapest flights?

airlines do their level best to ensure this is a fraut business, it's a mess of commissions, taxes, shadow advertising and fine print

One way trips often cost more or virtually the same as return flights
Airlines own websites have worse prices than comparison sites
Many comparison sites "forget" to compare certain carriers

Today for instance I found that KUL to london is 700US
...but when a leg from bangkok is added it's only 330US INCLUDING THE EXACT SAME KUL-London flight
and to make this even stranger, if I didn't catch the bangkok-KL leg my whole tiet would be canceled

I'm sure some of you have some real skill in this, so this could be a really productive thread

I would recommend STA travel for youth tickets
Skyscanner has a very functional search with an "open destination" feature that is very useful for identifying cheap routes

Rome2rio has a useful integration of train, bus and air timetables that can be really handy in europe
>>
And I feel the need to send a special fuck you to Expedia, for consistently trying to charge 5x the standard air fare
