Just got approved for a New Zealand working holiday visa. Essentially it's a visa saying I can live in the country for a year. Anybody have any experience with this? Any advice?

A couple things that I need to get taken care of, either before departing or soon after arriving:

>Traveler's insurance
>A place to live
>A place to work
>Finding a bank and transferring my funds
>A cell phone plan

Not sure I'm going, but just trying to feel it out before I make a decision

Book into an airbnb or backpacker hostel when you arrive, don't pay for accommodation you haven't visited. People will take advantage of foreigners. Finding a bank is easy, google what they need (usually you will need an address before you can do this, they might want a letter of introduction from your current bank saying you're a customer in good standing).
>>

Thanks for the advice! I was already thinking of booking an airbnb just to put a roof over my head to start, though I wasn't going to visit first, which sounds naive now. I'll look into it.

And yeah, I wasn't too worried about finding a bank, but it's something to check off. Wasn't aware of a letter of introduction.

One thing as far as work goes, I was thinking of trying to find work that offers room and board, to take care of the living issue as well. Does anybody know if that is viable for a full year's worth of living/employment?
>>
Where are you from ?

Any idea where you're heading?

So I'll be moving from the San Francisco bay area to either Portland, or Seattle area, I already have a few job offers in both areas, but I don't really know what to expect.

I am doing it guys. I always wanted to do stuff like this but I was always scared to go away on a journey like this. I literally went abroad in the 26 years of my life to the all inclusive resorts in turkey and greece never leaving the hotel.

This is a 26 day trip through China-Tibet-Nepal-India. It is organized by a travel agency, they call it as an "expedition", we will be a small group with a guide, the point will be to see a lot and returning only to sleep in cheap ass hotels.

I am leaving on the 18th of July and I am legitimately scared as fuck, do you have any reccomedations what I should do there in any of countries? Or any general travel tips? I never did a thing like this so far, I won't know anyone from our group for some reason I think like a little bitch that everything is going to turn bad.

you most likely aren't the first group that the guide took care of and he will tell you what to be cautious about. it is part of his job.
how much did you pay for the trip?
>>
based on the intro i thought you do this on foot or alone or something.

idk the worst that can happen is you realize how you could have done this much cheaper alone. so don't check the prices.

If you have a tour guide and a group there is literally nothing to be afraid of outside of things that are beyond your control anyway. Be respectful, responsible, and have a good time.

Hey, /trv/

So in about three weeks I will be driving from San Francisco to Orlando going through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Lousiana, and all throughout the southeast states, then back to SF through Tennessee, Missouri, Colorado, Utah - you get the idea.

My question is what are any recommendations for the coolest things to see in pretty much the entire bottom half of the continental united states? Secret stuff, unfrequented by tourists, hidden gems, etc. Stuff it'd suck to drive by without ever knowing it's there.

I'll be moving pretty quickly with about three weeks for the whole thing, and with three days in Orlando itself. Hope I came to right place. Would really appreciate the recs. Thanks!

Good shopping at the hotels. The hotels have really good buffet's too. Wicked spoon was probably the nicest one I went to imo.

If you want something very different, you can try the Machine gun shooting range on S highland Dr.

But really, my personal favorite is getting drunk shooting dice at the Bellagio. Find a good $10 table with a couple folks and just give the drinks lady $1 for every beer. I made $390 in 4 hours and got wasted lol.

I'm 28, I work on IT and I want to live abroad for a few years (I'm portuguese).

Both my french and german are about A2 and I've narrowed down my choices between Hamburg and Brussels.

One of the reasons I'm leaving is because most of my friends are already marrying or also leaving to some other countries and there's nothing here for me anymore. I want to meet new people and have fun both by outdoor activities and clubbing.

I've visited Brussels once but I didn't like the city except for the city center but I found the social life of the city good, and while I never have been in Hamburg I've did Erasmus in Munich so I think I know what to expect from a German city and I'm fond of Germany. The main reason I'm choosing these cities is because I've heard these two are the best cities for meeting new people, expat/international scene, events, etc..

What do you guys recommend?

I'm looking for recommendations for travel blogs. I used to follow (i.e. live vicariously through) a few by english speakers living in foreign countries, but most of them either stopped updating or the bloggers moved back home.

I don't even know if people still do these kind of things anymore or if they all moved to youtube, but I thought it was worth asking. Here's two dead ones I used to like to start the thread off, their archives are still up:

http://www.hellodamage.com/top/ (formerly known as Tokyo Damage? This one seems to have turned into a politics blog, but the posts from the early 2000s were great. Photo is from there.)

Is it stupid to get high right before flying? Not a junkie in any shape but I've been thinking of trying something before and not as insane to attempt any smuggling.

Tried a lot of low level stuff so 'acting normal' won't be an issue however with all the sophisticated swab technology, I'm worried that the dogs might start sniffing me.

It's a two hour flight within Western Europe

Unless you can exude confidence along with common sense and intelligence that a fair amount of drug users seem to lack, then you should be fine.

If not which is probably your case, don't be a fucking fag. Not even trying to be an ass but I think you need to realize that those drug dogs and ion scanners alert to microscopic amounts of cocaine, cannabis etc.. If you're one of those pussies who will shit their pants not knowing whether you carried drugs or not...don't do it.

>I'm worried that the dogs might start sniffing me.

lol, then it probably wouldn't be a good idea to get stoned. i assume you're talking about weed? do more drugs in your offtime.
>>
At the security at schiphol airport the guy after the scan asked me suddenly 'how am i doing?' (in the sense of how i thought he was doing).
I wonder why. But maybe you can except such things nowadays,

Might move to Heidelberg, from Leipzig of all places. Will it be mind-numbingly boring? Are students in college towns all absolute normies? Sure, Leipzig is annoying with all the lefty dime-a-dozens, but there's interesting stuff to do besides look at pretty buildings and drink beer. I dream of Berlin, half my family lives there, but my major of choice is simply not nearly as well represented there as down south.
I know this sounds /adv/, but I'm really just looking for people who've lived in Heidelberg and the likes for a while, what was it like?

>from Leipzig of all places
what do you mean by that if i may ask?
I will start a bachelor's in Heidelberg in October and I asked a couple of friends who study there and they all love the city. It's not huge but definitely beautiful. You should be able to find the right kind of friends with similar interests in any uni city, if you take the initiative.
Might be different for Masters but usually at least some people who chose to study the same thing as you should be likeable for you.
What will you study?
It's governed by the Green party so there will be lefties around but with almost 40k students in town there should be diversity of opinions.
When it comes to stuff to do, what exactly do you have in mind?

Sorry about the incoherent text but I'm too lazy to edit it now.

Is there such a thing as doing too much studying abroad? It seems like a convenient way to travel the world, but at the same time I feel like if I do it too often I'll end up with no friends at my actual college. I don't want to miss out on making what could be my life long friends.

I met a girl on the train to Budapest who offered to be my guide around Budapest. She was really friendly but I didn't get the vibe that she was scamming me. I asked her if she did it as a business (so money would automatically be involved) and she said no, just to guide in a friendly way.

Is this something that happens in Eastern Europe?

Going to Japan for two weeks. My first 4 days I will stay in Osaka to visit Kioto and other few places after that I'm going to Nagasaki for two days and go back to Toyko for the last 7 days.. I'm going alone I guess Japan is very safe like the most of the cities. Any actual advice?? Cheap places to eat and all that I will bring with me $2500

Have you already paid for your places to stay or do you think you'll be using 2500 to get rooms, food and transport?
>>

I'm not 100% travelling all the way from Osaka just to spend 2 days in Nagasaki is worth it. I've known people to usually do it as a day trip from Fukuoka. It might be a good idea to spend atleast a day in Hiroshima and/or Fukuoka on the way there.

Protip for Kyoto - don't bother with the buses, train/subway is possible for some sightseeing but outside of that just rent a bike instead. Buses are often full if going towards tourist sites. You'll often see a full bus to a tourist site turn up followed by a slightly less full one that's going nowhere near the tourist site. I've lost count how times I've seen tourists unable to get on the first bus jump on the second without checking it's going where they want...

As far as food goes, most restaurants have no problem with singles. Places like CoCo Ichibanya (curry), Marugame Seimen (udon), Sukiya and Yoshinoya (donburi), Ichiran and Ippudo (ramen) are good chains that serve cosistantly decent food and can be found almost everywhere.

This thread is for the people whose home is your country, the world, etc.,
not for people who have to plan out vacations. (Though a general idea of the direction you're taking is obviously acceptable)

>Where are you traveling to?
>Why are you traveling? Spiritual reasons? Simply for adventure?
>How does this lifestyle affect your relationships, if at all?
>How are you traveling?
>What are you doing for money?

Also, post sources, groups, etc., anything that is relevant.

A question for all the nomads:
what personality do you have?
how do you deal with lack of physical contact with long time friends, etc?
what doo you need to travel constantly for any amount of time? what equipment, skills, how much money? Do you actually need interenet?

please, state in what contries/climate do you stay
>>
>>1268513
>what personality do you have?
ISTP. I'm very, very self sufficient. But most people assume that I'm an extrovert because I can act like that when I want to.

>how do you deal with lack of physical contact with long time friends, etc?

Personally I never really cared or missed people. That's probably a reflection on my relationships at home. But I actually talk more to girls that I met traveling more than people at home now.

>what doo you need to travel constantly for any amount of time? what equipment, skills, how much money? Do you actually need interenet?

I'm not a good one to ask for this, my budget is far higher than normal because I saved a fuckload of money before I left and I'm not frugal. But I know lots of people that just make money wherever they are via stuff like workaway. They tend to spend more than they save and consantly bitch about how much stuff costs but they make it work.
