I will travel around Paris with eight other friends. Is it a good idea to cook our own food in our house? (found it via Airbnb)

>Is it a good idea to cook our own food in our house?
If you wish to save money, then yes, it can make sense to shop in a grocery or market and make at least one of your meals each day. I often skip a sit down meal while on vacation. It makes sense for sightseeing time as well as money. I get a coffee, and just have a whole fruit or granola bar, might buy some bread or pastries. Breakfast is done! Lunch can be the least expensive way to dine in an expensive locale or famous restaurant, which then leaves you to some homemade something for dinner, maybe even leftovers.

Whether cooking prevents you from enjoying one of the best parts of a Paris trip is your choice. You can still splurge on yummy baked goods, craft foods like cheese and salami to have with delicious mustard and wine, and there ya go. But, to walk around a city famous for yummy things and ignore all street food cause you made a dinner plan at home? Ugh. That's torture to me.

Hi /trv/,

I will be studying abroad in Japan for 4 months this fall, and I'm wondering what I should do for a cell phone that won't get me destroyed by international roaming costs. I could really use some guidance from more experienced travelers because it seems impossible to find a straight answer on this subject online.

> Bring my phone with me, get a Japanese SIM card and put that into my U.S. phone
> Buy/rent a Japanese phone while there

Any other options or opinions on what will be the least expensive for a 4 month span? My service provider is Sprint if that has any relevance.

Hey /trv/

I'm soon about to make a romantic getaway with my gf.
We've narrowed it down to 4 destinations but still can't decide.
Anyone have any experience etc. on the places ?

Any advice is appreciated

The fuck is romantic about Dubai? Can't even kiss the girl in public.
Morocco can be rough on a relationship. Possibly my favorite country but always very stressful.
I'd vote for Budapest. Unusual culture, weird and cheap alcohol, great stuff to post to facebook.

Need some urgent help.

I'm planning on going to Iran in a little over a month and everything is going fine so far except one thing. Apparently US citizens can only visit while under 100% around the clock supervision. The thing is that I'm a dual US/German citizen and I live in Germany. I'd really rather not be supervised while traveling throughout Iran as it kind of defeats the purpose of solo traveling a foreign land. I won't be able to experience a language barrier, true contact with the locals, spontaneous at-the-moment adventure, or plan my travels depending on my location and money situation.

If I travel solely on my German passport and leave my American passport at home will there be any chance of the Iranian authorities finding out that I'm an American? If there do what's the worst that will happen? Thanks in advance.

Probably nothing to worry about. Just make sure you temporarily remove your travel blogs and fb posts about your trip to Israel, just in case. Or that the first thing that appears when someone googles your name is not a page where you loudly proclaim your americanity.
>>
>>1138274
Not the first time I read about dual citizens using their non US passport to go to Iran. I don't think you need to worry. You live in Germany so it's only normal you use your German passport to apply for a visa in Germany. I was never asked if I happened to have American citizenship.
>>
>>1138342
>emporarily remove your travel blogs and fb posts about your trip to Israel, just in case. Or that the first thing that appears when someone googles your name is not a page where you

+1 with that.
It may be an avidence for you but don't brag out about the fact that you are american. a good proportion of people is in fact American friendly (and have some family in the US as they left in the 80's) but you may always fall on a pasdaran...

Hi trv,

Me and my buds, all 23 y/o, We're from Singapore and from different ethnic backgrounds (Malay, Chinese, Indian), will be heading to Vietnam in december, we're planning to fly to HCM city, spend a day or two and then head to Cambodia, specifically Pnom Penh.

1) as this is the first time ever we are going to be backpacking could you direct me to some resources about backpacking? we're not inexperienced travellers, having been to thailand, new zealand, america but we've always stayed in hotels and luxury so we wanted to try something new.

2) things we like doing, we're v chill dudes, we like history, art, music, dabbling in local culture. But other than that we're up for anything really, except prostitutes. Do you guys have any recommendations? in HCM city & Pnom Penh, or any place in between way.

Vietnam and Cambodia in general really. Thank you!

How long do you have?
>>
You say that you aren't into prostitutes, which would make a visit to Grand Sorya Mall in Phnom Penh, safe, and give you the ability to test your resolve. At 2am the ice vampires appear. They are not to be trifled with.

As for culture, you might want to check out some proper Apsara dancing. It is pretty highbrow and classy if you catch the right act to see.

And yes, S21, in your pic, is the place to go to. The killing fields just outside the city, not so much.

Also, don't miss out on Siem Reap. Some hustle there, but one could easily spend weeks there if temples turn you on.

I'd avoid hostels like the plague though. Since you are a group, you can get double rooms for the same price. Or at least a room with room for you guys alone.

Sup guys,
I'm planning my honeymoon. We want to go somewhere we can travel independently and get away from it all, buy a motorbike, stealth camp, that kind of thing, but also relax a wee bit, maybe a cheeky night or two at a resort.
We're stuck between Zanzibar and Bali. Bali seems ideal for the motorbike exploration/chill out on a beach type of escapade. I don't really know what Zanzibar is good for except for clubbing. We're not interested in clubbing. Of course we'd probably have to start in mainland Tanzania, so couldn't we buy a bike there and tour around before going to the island to relax?

My basic questions are these:
-Would Zanzibar/Tanzania be way more expensive than Bali?
-Are tourists treated like shit in either of these places?
-Culturally both these places have very good reputations. Is this exaggerated in either case? I struggle to believe that the Bali experience is any different than that of the rest of SEA, i.e. standing knee-deep in plastic bags while drinking fanta out of a plastic bag while someone keeps trying to sell you heroin in a plastic bag
And I struggle to believe that Zanzibar is anywhere near as cool as the google image results.

Our priorities are good food, nice nature, and ease of independent travel.

Thanks guise

Zanzibar is amazing been there. Zanzibar is not even good for clubbing.

Both have problems with Islam, tourists are treated more like shit in Zanzibar, just look up the news. Acid attacks, murder, it's not safe to walk around at night.

That said it is pretty fucking cool.

I was in the Sistine chapel in the Vatican earlier and there was a gangly, nerdy-looking kid staring down at his phone playing Pokemon Go for a good 20 minutes. He may have glanced upwards to take a selfie before moving to the next room with his phone still glued to his face.

It took Michelangelo 4 years to paint the ceiling of the chapel, on scaffolding that he designed himself, while painting in a very uncomfortable position. Some people don't deserve to travel.

Many people don't deserve to do many things. A lot of rich fucks don't appreciate well made food but because they have money they get to eat those $250 dinners at Noma or El Bulli.

Life is fucking unfair, if you don't understand this you have some maturing to do.

hi guys, i'm 19 and i've never traveled before, in fact I hardly get out of the house, which is why i'm trying to change this. Recently I've been trying to get out more and do things, and I've always wanted to go on a trip outside the US. Anyways, I came here to ask some general tips and tricks for getting cheap flights and traveling economy, I know taking vacations on a budget is a bit of a paradox, but I can't resist.

the place I'd like to go specifically is Salar De Uyuni, in Bolivia. I looked on a few flight websites, it seems like the cheapest round trips for about 3 days cost around $3000. accounting for food, hotels (looked like 100-150 a night around the area), could i accurately assess that I could take this whole trip, for 3 days, for under $5000? I was saving up to buy a car, but just 3 days at this beautiful location i would gladly replace it with. I also found this guy on reddit, scott's cheap flights, who sends out cheap flight deals sometimes, but i havent seen anything around there yet. would it be worth it to try for that or will it really matter in the long run.

any tips or tricks, useful advice or anything of the like for a first time traveler is gladly welcomed. thanks!

Hey bud. Did you read the sticky? There's lots of useful stuff there. I got my tickets using skyscanner, but i would recommend buying them waaaaay in advance. Like plan your trip 6-12 months in advance so you can get good prices. Also, skip hotels. you're 19, go do hostels and meet people. They're cheaper too.

Also book your flights on a Tuesday. It's cheaper.

I watch A LOT of food and cooking shows, shows about chefs, cuisines and all that shit. In a lot of them they travel to other places, or feature chefs from various parts of the world and how they have done visionary things with their local cuisines and other's cuisines as well.

I never see food travel as a topic on this board, so i am wondering if any of you have done any food tourism, or wanted to.

Have you traveled to destinations where food was a major influencer of choosing that destination?
Have you wanted to?
What places have you gone/wanted to go?
Have you been places where the food surprised you?

TL;DR let's talk about food and travel

Dunno if I'd go somewhere solely for the food but it's definitely a consideration. It's easy to remember when/where/with whom I was with through meals abroad.

Best - Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, China, Spain, France
Worst - Cambodia, China, Holland

Would like to try the food in Mexico, Trinidad, Japan.

Avoid using car or cab (cans are expensive, always use the subway and sometimes walk

Avoid the touristy shit. The best food in New York is usually some random restaurant in the city run by a person born in the country of the type of food. Basically, somewhere you'd see a local would go.

Hi /trv/

I'm looking at going to Cambodia in October/November from the UK. I haven't travelled much outside of Europe and this will be my first trip taken alone- although there will be others on the same trip as me, they'll be complete strangers. This is the one I was thinking of booking: http://www.statravel.co.uk/tour-details.htm?tourCode=STREPCAM

A few questions for seasoned travellers or those who have stayed in Cambodia before:
1. How fucked am I? Is Cambodia relatively safe/friendly to tourists? Anything in particular I should watch out for?
2. What is the food like?
3. The brochure I have says the climate around Oct/Nov is around 27 degrees C with about 30mm of rainfall. How accurate is this? What's the likelihood of bad weather?

Also general Cambodia question/discussion thread I guess.

I live there, more or less, so...

1. You will be OK, probably. Watch out when walking alone at night, so know where you are, and know how to get back. Mind you, the absolutely biggest risk of thieving comes from the girls. You are an absolute tool if you bring a girl into your room where your valuables are. Thieving is the national sport, but violent crimes are more rare. Also, lots of the usual scams present. If you are a noob when it comes to travel you will get targeted. Expect anything from paying double for the moto-taxis, to having to pay a bribe when you get busted for weed.

2. Phnom Penh and the ciites has lots of pretty decent western food. The local stuff is alright too, but nowhere near as good as Thai food.

3. Sounds too little. Most days and nights are fkn hot. Your skin will be all salty and you will probably have a hard time sleeping.

Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap have the most scams and hassle. I suggest you get out to Kampot or Kep (for example)
to acclimatise to climate and lifestyle.
>>
>>1137274

More... I see now that you have some holding hands group trip going on... so don't worry too much about safety. We're not talking about South Africa. Just remember what I said about the girls. They would rather rob you than screw you. It sort of makes sense...
>>
>>1137279
>>1137281
Thanks for the info.

As you say, I'm unlikely to be completely alone at any point, at night at least, but it's worth knowing. All the travel is arranged for us as far as I know so I'm less worried about taxis etc. unless I'm drunk. As for the thieving, are we taking waiting until I'm asleep and then making off with my wallet or mugging me in my own hotel room?

As for the food, that sounds all right, I don't mind not eating top class cuisine. How spicy is the average meal? Any dishes to try/avoid?

Weather sounds pretty much what I expected. All accomodation we're staying in has A/C or at least a ceiling fan so that will help, I guess?
