Hey /trv/ I've always wanted to visit Japan and been thinking about surprising my girlfriend with a trip.

The problem is, I've never planned a big trip and I'm fucking poor.

Can you help me get started? Information like
-where to visit
-where to stay
-how to get there

Im thinking the trip should be around 4 or 5 days. Basically any information you could give me on traveling to Japan or planning a trip in general would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that I live in Wisconsin.

Such a waste going all the way to Japan to only spend 4 or 5 days..

But then again, you are american, a slave to machine that keeps your country running. Do you even get paid vacation time?

No, but seriously, your confusion about even the most basic travel questions makes me think you would be missing cheeseburgers from the second your plane takes of..

No but really seriously, check out momondo.com to find cheap flights, booking.com or airbnb.com to find accomodation and buy Lonely Planet japan for literally any information you might need
>>
Japan's really expensive. The flight alone will take a day each way, so you should spend at least a week.

Confirmed for true. But also shoulder season has even more bargains for the layover...wait about a 8-12 weeks for best prices.

Wizzair, Ryanair, Easyjet. Book well in advance.

Hello fellow travellers.

So I'll be reaching Blacksburg, VA in a couple of weeks to attend VT and I think somewhere between the orientation and classes I'll have 3-4 days free. Are there any good places around that I can travel to in the 3-4 days? Also other things to do in blacksburg to keep boredom away?

Recommendations please.

I'm French and I'm going to leave France for a long, multi-countries, trip. In about a year I'd like to go to Russia to take the Transsiberian.

But getting a visa is a pain. I can't request it more than 3 months in advance, and I'm not sure I can obtain it from another country (since it looks like a need to live on the country where I make the request).

Am I stuck here? Do I need to go back to France and wait there during my trip?

I'd be very thankful if anyone could share tips or experiences.

Hey guys, in about a month, I'm moving to South Korea and will be living alone there for a couple years. I'm 18 and have no clue about the culture or about much Asia.

I'd be greatful for any tips or heads-up's about living there. I'll be staying in Busan.

I'm also fat (XXL), I've lost over 50 pounds in about a month already and should drop plenty more before I go, but I know I'll still stick out pretty badly.

Also, language wise, I'm "ok" at Japanese and have gotten "ok" with learning Hangul. Is it tricky to pick up Korean?

I'll take any info or help I can get. I'm kind of stressed about the whole thing because I've only had about a months notice about the move.

BUMP, wanna see people answer this (I'm not OP)
>>
Why are you moving there? What are you going to do?

Also, what do you want to know? Here's a general rundown (I am Korean)

Korea is very focused on physical beauty, so appearance matter GREATLY. You're already dropping weight which is a good thing if you want a chance with the ladies there

Korean isn't very hard to learn, although the grammar structure is different (English has Subject-Verb-Object whereas Korean has Subject-Object-Verb) so literally translating sentences doesnt work.

I would recommend starting to learn Korean now because you can't learn any language in just a matter of days, especially one that doesn't use any Latin letters

Its literally impossible to lose 50 lbs in a month

I'm going to Melbourne for 9 days in September and want to spend time on the Great Ocean Road. Has anyone done this before and can you give itinerary advice.Renting a car for a few days seems more affordable than joining a tour group. Also, general thoughts on Melbourne/Victoria

Couple of days will be enough. You dont really need an itinerary just drive and stop at the well-marked lookout points whenever you feel like it. Lorne is very expensive and touristy, Apollo Bay is a bit nicer as a stopover. There's a facebook page about whale sightings, sometimes you can get lucky.

Ah yeah and get a car please don't do the tour it's awful

I have a 5 hour layover. Anything worth checking out or should I just stay in?

>>1141585
That doesn't sound like enough time to do much of anything.
>>
Just got back from a 2 week vacation there, it depends what time of day your layover is at.

If it's during the day, go shopping and eat street food in meongdong and then get some korean bbq after more shopping in hongdae. Seoul is an eating/shopping/clubbing city

If it's at night go hit the clubs/bars. Mikes cabin and tuesday party in hongdae are fun to barhop between. If you'd rather go clubbing, you can go to one of the biggest clubs in the world at Club Octagon. I also liked noisy basement 2. It's a hip hop club that's busy every day of the week
>>
The airport in Seoul does not offer international flights, except to Narita. You probably have the layover at Inchon International, which is about a 75 minute bus ride from Seoul. Given that, I would just stay at the airport, it has a lot of nice art on the walls and stuff.

hey, I'm from brazil and I'll be studying in vienna in the following winter semester. I'd like some general tips of what to do over there, bar recommendations, etc... I'll be travelling alone, so it would be nice to meet some new people during my stay. thank you

be mentally prepared for winter, although it doesn't get as cold (also way less snow now) anymore than it used to, it still is cold and dark/grey. the glühwein and punsch makes up for that though ;)

which university are you going to be at?
>>
>>1141582
Vienna is prime for visiting a lot of side towns on weekends on short train rides. Can you get visas for hungary and czech rep at the same time (or do you need to from your country, double check since it may be easier to get at your home embassy?). You'd enjoy Prague, Budapest, which are as vastly different from Vienna as from each other. Even shorter popular excursions: Dresden, Melk, Salzburg, etc.
>>
>>1141767
yes, I'll need some time to get used to it, hehe. there's no such a thing as winter in the city where I live. I'll be studying in the university of vienna =)

>>1141773
I'm really looking forward to visiting prague. and no, I don't think I need a visa to enter in those countries, as long as I don't stay there for more than 90 days. I'll check, though. thank you!

So I'm travelling a month to Europe on mid September. I'm planning on spending a week on major cities (Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich and Prague) and visiting neighboring cities from there.

On the last week, I'd like to visit the most in France, so I'll take a train from Prague to Strasbourg>Lyon>Toulousse>Mt. Saint Michel>Paris. I'll take a night bus from city to city to make the most of my time and I'll be spending one day in each city.

I had to drop Annecy and Carcassone from the list because I'll probably won't have enough time.

Anyone has experience doing this? I already know it's going to be exhausting af and that I won't get to know the cities very much but I feel that I need to make the most of my time on the last week.

Yeah.
Not fun and pretty stressful.
>>

>>but I feel that I need to make the most of my time on the last week.
I suggest you reconsider your definition of "make the most of my time".

Is it really rushing through various locations, seeing many places for a little time and stressing about not getting lost, not losing the bus/train, hoping not to get stuck in traffic/lines, getting frustrated because all these people blocking my way are making me waste my precious time and having an awful sleep?

Because that's normally what happens when you plan and decide to stick with too much for too little time. You'll get stressed with every little thing that could kill your planning, even a crowded street where you can't walk fast enough.

I need some honest assessments about our 50th state.

I've been thinking about moving to Hawaii for quite some time. I work IT for a living and after a ton of horrible shit happening with $3,000 to my name I need a change.

How hard would it be for me to start over without being a total pleb? I tend to live pretty lean and really won't be bringing much with me.

What's the "real" Hawaii like?

Everything is expensive in Hawaii because it's mostly imported.

Real Hawaii is wild and poor. Beautiful place but I seriously research the living costs.

Hey everyone, planning on doing a road trip through tuscany for a week in August. We'll fly into Pisa and pick up our rental car there. Any of you guys habe any suggestions about what to see apart from the obvious? I've already been to Lucca, Siena, Florence before, I would like to explore the back country a bit, maybe the Chianti region. Would love to hear your suggestions!

Well, to be more helpful, how long are you staying? Do you know the language?

We picked Moscow as a stopover between our connective flights. We will stay in Moscow for 13 hours. We want to explore places outside of the Red Square.
Should I get a phone card or not? How much do they cost? Should I buy one at the city centre or at the airport? Is it easy to find your way around Moscow without the help of the internet? I used Google Maps and all the street names are in Russian. Me and my friends want to save money.
