Gonna take a trip to the South this coming week.

Plan: Drive down from NYC to Annapolis and Washington DC the first day. Second day drive through Shenandoah Natl Park and then head south through Appalachia in NC, SC, and possibly Georgia.

On the way back: Drive to Savannah (possibly), Charleston, Outer Banks, Virginia Beach, etc

Are there any cities/towns/places that would be recommendable for a visit?

Manchester (starting point), Leeds, York, Dunham, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Hadrian's wall, Carlilse, Liverpool.

What am I missing? What should I take off?
32 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Some notes: I have 4 days, doing it by train, and about 700 to blow (tho I'll try to spend less)
>>
Drop Newcastle and Carlisle for starters. Spend more time in Edinburgh.
>>
>>1136570
Why Leeds? Why Carlisle? Why Liverpool? I can't think of anything touristy to do in these locations unless you're a huge Beatles fan or something. Go to a smaller town like Keswick if you want to check out the Lake District, although much of the Lake District is difficult to access via train. Blackpool maybe worth a visit instead of Liverpool?

I can't think of much to do in Newcastle unless you're a heavy drinker looking to get pissed on a pub crawl.

Check out the Beamish museum when you're near Durham. It's not quite as good as the Black Country museum because they don't have canals up there, but it's pretty much the same thing.

What do you mean by bad? Like crime? Posting for interest because I'm planning a trip for here soon. Normally I'd say google neighborhood maps and ratings/reviews for them. Or just google what minority lives where.
>>
I was in SF last year for a conference, and I'm from smalltown Germany.

Had a hotel right in the middle of tenderloin, and while it did not really feel nice, it also did not seem to bad.

Maybe it's just a US thing, to be afraid of everything?

The german wikivoyage just says:
>Sicherheit
>San Francisco ist eine sichere Stadt - mit Vorsicht und Umsicht ist jedoch ein Ausflug ins Tenderloin nach Anbruch der Dunkelheit zu genießen.
SF is a safe city, but be careful when going to tenderloin after dark.

The english one on the other hand, has 3 paragraphs, most of them listing just common sense stuff.

I was just behaving as I always do - walk fast and with an aim, just as if I knew the area, and dont stop around, waving around a camera or a map in "bad" areas. If someone asked me for a dime, It was just a friendly "no, sorry", while I kept walking.

I've been thinking of getting a job on a cruise ship. I can see the world and as long as I pick something like retail it shouldn't be too different from my regular job. I get free housing and food and free travel. Plus there's the whole matter of what goes on below decks. Is it a good idea for an 18 year old American who wants to see the world? What cruise line should I pick? Should I do transatlantics only? How much could I make? Anything I should know beforehand?

As a non officer, you will get precious little time off, hard hours, low pay, and not always off in ports and will be forbidden from fraternizing with passengers like officers can. Assume the majority of the crew that is equal to you are gay or extremely promiscuous, and annoyingly so.
As an officer, it's a good gig if you wish to remain single for a while, because you do have the ability to save 98% of your salary into a bank account, maybe even a tax free situation. If you can stick it out for 10 years, you should have a lifetime foundation of retirement savings or an investment property at least. It's hard on relationships, with officers rarely getting the same ship with each other to maintain a relationship. Also, you will have a bit of a disillusioned image of the company, as it hires foreign nationals of the same origin for each specific kind of job. Yes, only americans, norwegians and brits get officer jobs. The cabin crews, waiters, laundry have shitty low class hours and living standards, but it's right at the level of pay for their originating nations, at least.

Source: Sibling did 4 years as a ships purser on the largest/newest ships for a line as they were launched, and another 4 years of 2 weeks at a time vacation relief for officers on various ships during the summers for same line as he finished his masters. He got his foot in the door by doing ship-to-shore while getting his bachelors. Today, probably need the grad degree just to get the foot in the door.

If I was seriously interested in a sea job? Get the big bucks, and the money is really out there. Go to an accredited Maritime college. If I was only looking to travel with my job, I'd get an FAA pilots license. Huge international shortage. Start with the $5k one, and get your hours up to 40 as you accrue monies. Just being an American should get you a job.

>>
>>1135840
Not OP but just out of curiosity would a recent grad with a standard LA or Business degree be of any use on a cruise ship?
>>
>>1135840
OP here, what if I only have a high school diploma? Should I try to do a 8 month contract to see if I like it? Also, I don't really have any skills outside of customer service and retail so is there anywhere on the ship I could work? Is there anything you'd recommend in terms of skills I should learn to get me the best job possible with my education level or am I going to need to go to college to get anything that doesn't completely suck?

Looking to backpack around NZ this September for and undetermined amount of time and possibly work fruit picking. Anyone have recommendations for must see locations, favorite hostels, or personal experiences to share?

Hiking - southern alps, Hillary trail, tongariro national park. Also feel free to make your own route if there isn't a restriction board.

Fruit picking can be done at any farm desu, either look it up on google or just stop by at a farmhouse or Vinery or anything alike and ask them.
Go on a drive on the east coast of South Island, wild seals, they let you pet them if you aren't a cunt. Be nice and buy them uncooked fish from a store if anything and don't be a Chinese tourist and just run up to them.

If you plan to sleep in the car, which is safe, just have a blanket. Sleep at national park parking lots. Don't sleep near or in cities.

Sunscreen. Do not forget to buy sunscreen, especially if you're white, I can't stress this enough. We basically have no ozone layer.
>>
>>1135827
Thanks for the response I appreciate the tips. Ive been reading the backpacker forum and it seems like there are many jobs that farms are always seeking help with. Have you worked any?

I am primarily going for the beautiful landscapes but where do you think has the best night life? I am white so I'll remember the sunscreen and was thinking of hostels but the car thing is good to know when traveling

Why dont you want to sleep near or in cities? Are the police going to have a problem with that?

I want to teach English overseas, preferably in the MENA region (Tunisia, etc).
As a U.S. citizen, I know I must take the TESOL/TOEFL/CELTA certification first. This is usually 120+ hours with a practical demonstration to teach actual students to prove one's ability.
Tunisian programs require at least one year of experience, so I will need to teach somewhere else first..

I live in the Southern California region. Realistically, what are my steps to making this a reality?

(Any good cert programs in the SoCal region? I cannot find any useful info out here.)

Hello /trv/! My gf and I are going near Pula in Sardinia for 10 days at the end of July, I was wondering what to do there, I'd like to meet people and enjoy the time there.

If you have anything to share about your own experience in Sardinia or as a local browsing /int/, you are welcome to post here!

We are staying two days near Orosei, a week near Pula then three days in Alghero. Any recommendation?

I speak little Italian but I'll bring a translation manual to help, we will use our own car thanks to the ferry boat.

Thanks!

Hi dude! Sardinian here, I hope you are still following the thread. I would tell you to definitely go to Castelsardo, one of the most beautiful towns of the island. It's quite near to Alghero. Same for Bosa, even more near to it.

Also I don't know what your interests are but you can find informations about a bit of everything about Sardinia here:

Also, check out this thread where me and another couple guys responded to a Finnish dude who was asking informations about Sardinia as well:

I posted a lot of stuff there as well.

Have fun!

I also want to go to Orgosolo. I know a tiny bit of Italian but I would LOVE to know some (north) Sardinian words and phrases! I have had a hard time finding this online.

go to Lübeck, there is also a great Christmas market
>>
I lived in Kiel for like 4 years, to study. Here are my tips.

>Don't go to Gaarden, it's dangerous, like stabbed in daylight dangerous.
>The City is really boring if it's not Kieler Woche and like the other anon said the Christmas Market in Lübeck is much better.
>go on a walk in Strande, not Laboe overrated as fuck. Except you want to visit a submarine.
>The Schleswig-Holsteinisches Freilichtmuseum is worth a visit imo. If you want to see some old Ethnostuff.
>Never ever go to the Tucholsky-Club, everything is sticky, the Bouncer steal and are aggressive.
>I've lived near the Tiergehege Tannenberg if it's snowy this place is very comfy, from there you can walk to a small ferry over the Kiel-Channel.
>It's free and you get to see big ships if you go to the end of the channel on the North Side.
>There you must visit the Schiffercafé in Kiel-Holtenau it's near a wonderful little Lighthouse.
>Near that Cafe the MFG 5 some old helicopterairport.

Thats pretty much everything worth in Kiel

The easy-goingness of Italy. You wanna chat with total strangers for a bit? No problem: it's a nice way to pass the time between two bus stops. If you did that over here, they'd just as likely throw you off the bus rather than talk to you.

I am debating going there this early November with my wife for a short vacation (4 nights). Last year we went to Prague and Krakow during January and I really enjoyed the mood/setting. Obviously Quebec City isn't Europe but I was thinking for a short trip it would be a good location. Or is it just full of your typical touristy shit?

I want the cheapest fairs possible witbout having to worry about them fucking up and not getting me a ticket like some other sites.

Does Kayak really provide the best prices with the most reliable service?
41 posts and 2 images submitted.

Kayak just basically compares other sites like Expedia, Orbitz and whatever else. Then the lowest one shows on top. You can also use Google Flights, that one is pretty good but can miss out on some airlines. Vice versa for kayak.

I get all my alerts from Kayak. In 5 weeks I am going to New Zealand and I only paid $225 RT from LA. Got the email fare alert from Kayak and booked the flight, so there's that.

I believe it's the biggest or one of the biggest free general admission amusement parks in the U.S. Probably way down on your list in-regards to overall enjoyment. The park does have a certain charm to it.

Also in PA we have Hersey Park which is widely known for its rides.
Not sure where that would be on your list since I've only been to Disney and Universal on your list.
