Pic related doubles as backpack and I already have one.

If Im to buy a new one budget is as small as possible while providing enough carry space. Im just not sure if 20L will be enough, never done something like this before.

To be honest that sounds like a nightmare to me. 5-6 days for Southern Germany, through Italy, to Greece, to Istanbul? What the fuck dude, how did you come up with that?

Istanbul alone has material to keep you busy for like 2 weeks (actually, forever). I honestly can't understand your plan. You're starting in Munich. Cool. So you have like what, an entire day there? And then sleep on the bus to Venice because that shit takes a LONG time?

Then you're in Venice. What's the plan here? Possibly a morning (lol at seeing Venice in 3 - 4 hours), then the fast train to Florence? Again 3 - 4 hours? Then the fast train to Rome? Now your second day is gone, plus a night since you're sleeping there.

Then to Bari, how much time will you spend there?

Then you take the ferry over which takes A LONG FUCKING TIME again?

Now we're hitting day 4 1/2 at the least, you just arrived in Athens. Spend half a day there, then fuck off on a bus to Thessaloniki which is easily 8 hours again? Now you're on day 5. See Thessaloniki for half a day then go over to Istanbul?

And you want to do all this with a 20L side carry-on bag? Where are you going to shower or are you just going to stink up busses?

What to take with you? Take a rope, because you'll want to kill yourself.

I'm going to be visiting Seattle in a few days. What am I in for? Anything I should know? Never really been to a major city before, so I don't know what it's like and I'm just generally nervous about the whole thing.

People shit talk Seattle a whole lot around here but I liked it a lot.
Nice mix between big city and comfy feels in my opinion.
>>
Google the "Seattle Freeze". It's nothing to do with the climate. Happy reading.
>>
I'm doing the same thing, OP! Visiting family in a burb called kirkland. I really want to do lots of hiking, walking, and cycling, although I probably can't bring my own bike. I love coffee shops too, so I might visit some, although maybe that's just a meme. My stereotypical image of Seattle is hiking through a really lush, damp hillside with lots of tall trees... wonder if I can find that.

I am going to Thailand next month and due to weakening pound I will only have 4500 baht per day for 15 days.
I already paid for flights and hotels.
My question is:is 4500 baht per day enough?
I only plan on sightseeing, no parties, no drinking, maybe one ladyboy escort per three days.
Is my budget ok?

>>

That should be more than enough... you could even drink a bit (or a lot, if you're OK with local rotgut 'whisky' purchased from convenience stores). Fancy bars or nightclubs are beyond your range, but most other places will not be.

It's possible to eat well on the street for less than THB200/day. Restaurants will be more, obviously. But you have room.

Tourist attractions vary but are rarely expensive--a few hundred tops, usually less.

Local transport is cheap--most I've ever spent on a cab was a bit less than THB400, and it should be even less for normal excursions (this was from central BKK way out to the Nonthaburi suburbs--took at least an hour).

The ladyboy escorts are your biggest variable. It's not my scene, but the few times I've spent time with go-go girls I've definitely laid out at least THB3000 all-in. Most girls will ask for two grand short-time; this is obviously negotiable, but it's always seemed disgusting to me to bargain too hard (although there is a whole culture seemingly devoted to ripping off hookers, which you will readily find online).
>>
>>1136976
Thanks for the tips.
Almost all my hotels are booked with all you can eat breakfast so I will gorge on that to save money.
Only one without the option is in Pattaya where I am for 3 days. But I already found a local Thai fast food joint with good tripadvisor reviews where you can good breakfeast for 200 baht. I don't plan on spending more than 500 baht per day on food.
Ladyboy prices seem a bit high from what I expected(1500 baht per short time)..We will see.
>>
>>1136991
If you don't plan to spend more than THB500/day on food, you are absolutely fine. Even with a pricy hooker date every night (the THB3000 I described above included the girls, bar fines [600 or so, just to get the girl out of the establishment--none of this goes to your date, just to her bosses], a few drinks, and some street food), you should have nearly 1000 baht a day to spend on entertainment and getting around. Should be easy.

On my last few trips I've noticed a worrying pattern. Hostels, motels, and hotels are in many places fully booked up, they're also booked up a long time ahead. I also have been noticing the increase in costs associated with travel, camp sites being expensive, entrances to places getting ridiculous in many cases...and yet, there's more travelers out there now than ever before.

Have you guys been seeing the same or something similar? It seems to me like the world is turning away from adventurous exploratory travel (RealTraveler™ type) into more packaged tourists vacations. With small amounts of vacation time I can see the type of people who a generation ago would spend $3000 on a 3 month trip now spend $3000 on a week or 2 week getaway.

3000 for a week sounds about right. I like to live a little while traveling.
>>
>>1135501
depends on where you go. over time it's getting more expensive. the golden age of travel was probabl the 70s, when american currency was at its strongest and other countries were a lot weaker. your money would go 4-5 times as far.

from the 90's to the 2010s as well, costs have maybe doubled for non-industrialized countries.

it's still not that expensive though. it just depends.
>>
Well $3000 today is not worth the same amount as $3000 10 years ago. Inflation happens.

Now if you own a hotel or something, or if you are the govt, you feel the effects of inflation and raise prices of things accordingly. But regular people feel inflation a little more slowly, and our perception of what a $20 is worth takes a lot of time to change. Things aren't necessarily getting expensive, its just the money used to buy them is worth less.

Budget? Personal interests? Length of stay? I'm assuming you're not just arriving in Manila and making it up as you go along so where do you plan on going (or where would you like to go)?

My number one piece of advice for where to go is: The best time to go to Boracay is now. It's getting worse and worse as the years go by due to overcrowding, poor infrastructure and not being able to handle the growing number of tourists every year. It's stunning but being ruined.

I've not been to Palawan but from what I understand it's closer to "old" Boracay.

If you are white you will be popular because you have more money than the locals. With this will come the issue of being charged three times the local rate for some things. I went on a five hour boat trip around Boracay with snorkelling and a buffet included. It cost the equivalent of £9 (including tip for the two crew on the boat). They would have charged us nearly £30 if we didn't have a local in our group. Once they saw us they insisted the price go up. They're a poor country so you feel bad, but just be aware that will happen.

Also, on Boracay we had a kid come up to us and offer to take our picture with the sandcastles. "No charge, just a tip". I had only just arrived and had little change. I had 20 pesos, 100 pesos and 1000 pesos. No way he was getting the last two. I handed over 20 and he said "One more, sir". Not only that but two of his friends turned up and asked for money too. I walked off. "Fuck you, Sir". Pretty funny, but also quite sad.

Try the local mangoes, especially on Boracay. Try lots of fruits because they're incredible there. If you hear somebody at a stall say what sounds like "Hello, hello" they aren't. They're saying "Hallo Hallo", which is the national desert. It's not a fixed recipe but it's delicious (albeit with a weird mix of textures) and will cool you down a treat.

I'd type more but this may have been completely useless to you so I'll wait for more information from you for now.

We are going to be over there for a month, Jan till Feb. So far we have booked to get a flight in to Manila and are leaving straight to Cebu after arriving as we have heard it is a nicer place for tourism. From their we have no plans except flights leaving Palawan at the end of our trip so thats where we will end up at. Mostly interested in nice beaches and activities such as the canyoneering in Cebu. Would really like to know about how expensive accomodation is around the area, since our budget isnt huge, we dont mind staying in cheap hostels/hotels.

Today, three of my good, long-time friends suddenly decided that they want to go to India for New Year's. They really want me to join in on the action too.

Problem is, though I've never been to India, I have a very negative image of it: filth everywhere, poverty on every corner, five horns honking at once every second, touts scamming you on every city block, etc. It's basically my go-to image for "filthy poverty-ridden hellhole" in my mind.

Yet these are really good friends of mine who are always really fun to hang out with. On top of that, the four of us haven't gathered in a couple years (always just two or three at a time). So even if the destination is a shitty place, it might still be good fun in spite of that.

What do you think? Do good friends or a good destination matter more? Should I go?

The fact that you have such a negative image of a place you've never personally been to is exactly the reason why you should go.

I like India a lot. In fact, I've been there six times in the last three years and I'm about to go again in December.

I'm not a hippie and I'm not the kind of person who thinks of finding spiritual salvation in poverty. However, I did live in Delhi for a year and a half and have tons of great friends spread out all across the capital city and elsewhere. I can and will admit that the country has a lot of problems. There are a lot of beggars, amputees, perverts, and weirdos. Horn honking is used more as a mode of communication than as a way to warn or signal an impeding accident. And indeed, there are a lot of con artists and tourist touts as well.

Whether or not you enjoy India really depends on what kind of person you are. I'm not saying this to be rude, because everybody is different, but if you need a sterile, safe, cozy, and ordered vacation, then no, you shouldn't go. Most of the other foreigners I've met in Delhi who traveled around loved the country to death. There are exceptions, though, and they're usually the exact kinds of people you'd wonder why the fuck would have gone to India in the first place. Can't shit in a hole a rest stop every so often? Don't go to fucking India. Can't say no to a beggar? Don't go to fucking India. The thought of a guy who makes $100 per month trying to rip you off makes you angry? Don't go to fucking India.

Now, I like India because, beyond all the pestilences and inconveniences, it is a beautiful country with a great number of very genuine and emotional people. I've dated there, I have good friends there, and the decent Indians I've met on the street and on the Metro are some of the best anywhere.

Time, experience, and a helping of patient will show how you to deal with India's inconveniences and trials. I've found that problems with scammers and tourist touts are very prevalent in Delhi, Agra, and a very small handful of other cities - but when I went to Kolkata, for instance,

Yesterday I flew from the Big Island to Oahu on a 717. I was trying to take a nap at take off, but my traveling partner saw another 717 start to take off, lift off slightly, then a loud noise and a large puff of black smoke and then the plane came back down safely.

Are plane malfunctions common? Has anyone been on a plane where something like that happened?

Hey /trv/,

I'm thinking about getting a campervan and roaming around Europe. Money won't really be a problem, since I play the saxophone and hence can busk easily. Has anyone here done something similar, and perhaps has some tips for me? I want to do this either alone, or with my bestfriend who is also a musician. Any sort of advice is appreciated!

I'm kind of upset right now, mostly with myself. But I do need some advice.

I going to Italy next month. I've been really excited about this trip for a while, because a female friend of mine, who we briefly had a thing, lives close to where I will be. And I was excited to spend a lot of time with her... Well,, things changed the past 2 months. And she's seeing another guy.. It makes me feel like shit. And now, I'm dreading this trip. Because I know I'm going to feel fucking terrible once I get into Italy.

What can I do to help overcome this and make this trip enjoyable..?

We'll be seeing sights, going to the beach, cliffjumping, drinking Karlovacko, hiking in Paklencia and Krka, kayaking, bungee jumping and maybe a visit to Dubrovnik.

What else should we try to see and do? Also, what is top tier croatian food?

Dear /trv/

I am looking for help travelling from South Korea to Vietnam.

I will be studying abroad in Seoul starting 24th of August. My semester will be done by the end of december. I really would prefer to travel as cheap as humanly possible, disregarding any kind of comfort is not a problem. I've already been on Thai trains with roaches everywhere.

Are there any bus options? How long would that generally take? A google search revealed nothing at all. If not, where would I best book my flight? I've found flights from Seoul to Hanoi back to Seoul for 200€ (~220$). Is that a good price?

Are there any other ways to get to Vietnam from South Korea? Do any of you have experience travelling in asia? Any Koreans/Vietnamese here I can point more general questions at?

breh I don't think you realise how far away the two countries are

flying is the only option
>>
>>1140467

The only barrier is China my friend. I would have no problem with a 24hour bus trip through Beijing and Shanghai towards northern Vietnam.

Also going by ferry seems to be an option, too, no?
>>
>>1140481
There are ferries connecting Korea to Russia, China and Japan, afaik. Don't know if there are any connecting to Vietnam.
Going by ferry to China and then on land is an option. This could be cheaper if you find cheap land travel in China (bus maybe?), but it'll probably take you like a week or so, may be risky and may save you like US$50.
Never even considered this option because it's retarded, but who am I to judge you if you want to save a few bucks?

Wanted to hear everyone's countries of choice for the following categories:

1. Favorite Urban Destination:
2. Favorite Nature Destination:
3. Favorite Country Overall:
4. Place You'd Never Visit Again:
5. Dream Destination:

1. Cusco, just an amazing city with fantastic culture, surroundings, and people.
2. Monument Valley, Utah, I've never seen a more beautiful sunrise than over there as I rose from my tent (pic related).
3. Peru, it has every type of landscape and environment you could imagine!
4. Nebraska... just nothing there for me
5. Egypt, I've just always been drawn to everything about it

1. Istanbul, all crazy happenings aside, it is a beautiful city and being a Muslim, having a place to pray pretty much everywhere in a modern city beautified as Europe is ideal.
2. Rishikesh, I stayed at an ashram for a while and being surrounded by the Himalayas with the pristine Ganges floating nearby was something that will forever bring a smile to my face.
3. India, for the natural and diverse beauty, friendly, kind, and English speaking population, the safety I felt while backpacking, THE FOOD, unparalleled to all other places I've been to, the ancient history that is found everywhere, and finally the raw simplicity that allows you to look at animal and human excrement beside you on the ground and shrug your shoulders.
4. Seychelles, I went with my family for a vacation a few years back and found it rather uneventful. It felt like one of those places you could go to one and never feel the need to again.
5. St. Petersburg, Russia has been my dream for a long time, likely because I've read too many Russian novels. I'm hoping to save up over the next year or two and maybe backpack through from China.

1. Singapore
2. Bolivia/ Amazon
3. Impossible to decide but probably Bolivia as well
4. Honestly have not had a trip that I would have regretted enough to say that.

2. Sognefjord, Norway
3. Australia
4. Bali, Indonesia
