For some reason there's no SEA thread up so I'll selfishly make a thread.

I'll be heading north from Bangkok with the goal being getting to Laos. I had planned on going through North-East Thailand because I liked the idea of seeing some nice temples and just wandering around on a motorbike around some more 'untouched' places.

Most people don't understand why I wouldn't just go straight north to Chiang Mai/Rai and cross the border that way. Am I just being a RealTraveler and ignoring that the North is objectively more fun for a white dude with no Thai knowledge?

Also, any comments or recommendations on Laos or Cambodia? Not really sure what people are doing in Cambodia outside of the capital and the two main temple complexes.

But to answer your question, Udon Thani is the biggest and most traveler friendly city in Isan (NE Thailand) and you can cross the border into Vientiane in Laos north from there. Also Isan is undderated

My dad and i are going to go to Toronto for the 2nd time. Apart from the CN Tower, the Royal Museum and the downtown, is there any other attractions that are close enough so we can walk the distance(or take the bus/subway/tramway if too distant.) ?

Everything is within walking distance/public transport. Pick ant Toronto destination you like, you can get there in 30 mins.

Art Gallery of Ontario, Allan Gardens, you can see a Jays game for 15 bucks if you're fine with nosebleed seats, Trinity Bellwoods park, Kensington Market, Toronto Islands (10 dollar ticket), check out the ceramics museum across from the ROM, uhmm there's really not much here

I am debating whether I should take a week long cruise to Caribbean or take bagpack trip to Puerto Rico for one week. I never have been to Central America before, so I am looking forward to explore around. I want your opinion. Would you a) Take a cruise to Caribbean for a week or b) Improvise your own plan and explore Puerto Rico? I am beginning to lean toward option b)

BTW, has any of you been to Puerto Rico before? Any recommendation? Places to avoid? Places to check out?

I wouldn't go on a cruise alone. They're kind of only as fun as the people who travel with you. Fact.

I wouldn't backpack in Puerto Rico. It's very economically depressed, more of a driving vacation, or just going to one or two places, and it's peak of summer. You'd want to do 2 days in San Juan and the GTFO away from 4x as many cars as should be allowed, explore El Yunque, and then go somewhere else that interested you, like a resort/beach area, Vieques or the Fajardo casino, etc, and you will not feel "safe" most everywhere you go...alone. People are nice and awesome, but it's just a suffering economy and that brings drugs and crime.

If you are dead set on the alone thing, and the Caribbean, and you're trying to do a budget backpack thing, I'd suggest Costa Rica or Panama. Fact remains that you get a lot of bang for your buck on a cruise, under $50/day in some cases which includes all your meals. If I was picking a place in alll of the caribbean to be alone? I'd go to Cayman, or pretend I was somewhere else and visit in Miami or the Keys. It's like another country and airbnb is cheap.

Sorry a little miscommunication...
I meant to say, I am planning to rent a car and drive around the island instead of staying in Puerto Rico. I want to explore around the island (beaches, parks, etcs) And I will be going to this trip with my wife, so i won't be lonely

Also I am planning to go there around winter time instead of now. Have you had any experience with Puerto Rico during winter?

I'm going to visit Budapest in the end of September. Is there any Hungarian who can recommend me some nice places to see?

>I'm going to visit Budapest in the end of September. Is there any Hungarian who can recommend me some nice places to see?
Year before last, I went to the Budapest Wine Festival (Borzfesztival) inside the Castle Grounds in Buda, which I swore was such a nice time I was going to return every single damn year to go to it.
It was freaking lovely under the stars in the dramatically lit grounds, with breezes and a view of the water and city below. I spent the whole time with a trio of terrific locals I met in a queue at the langos booth (hungarian street food, fried dough), something I needed not to get so drunk. You carry your wine glass around your neck. The best traditional musicians in the country were there, jammin accordians and violins, as well as all the terrific wineries in the country (like 200?) with samples. There was like a $6 ticket for 15 samples, but for locals the whole thing is quite expensive, so you'll be rubbing elbows with some of the jetset and should dress nicely. September 8 - September 12 Buda Castle terrace is this years date, hope that is when you might be there (if not change your flights, seriously!).
Within Buda, gotta recommend a stay or walkthrough the ruins inside the Hilton (like nowhere else in the world). There's a nice restaurant across the street that has a historical instrument, a cimbalom type of harpsichord that evening musicians play. Sorry can't remember the name, but when you walk along the bastion, just look in the door of each, and you'll see it just inside. Good soup there. Also in Buda, and not to be missed (open at night too) is the Hospital in the Rock, a literal time capsule of medical care in an underground war bunker built in connecting series of caves under businesses. It has pre and post soviet relics, all just as the military left it when it was sealed up. Medical devices in cases and uniformed wax figures to show what each room was used for (swear I saw Abe Lincoln in there).

>I'm also interested and any tips for travel (best tickets for public transport? are cab fares reasonable?) etc would be appreciated.
For safety's sake to avoid the sleaziest of crime against tourists, from the train station and airport both, I would recommend a taxi driver connected to your hotel. Prearrange transport.
After that, unless it's late night, within the city, public transport buses are fine, and the ancient metro is quite historic (worth seeing) and useful up and down Andrassy Av which is utterly walkable between Terror House Museum and the Szechenyi park baths. Do both of those, allowing 4 hours for each. Don't rush them.

Budapest has a WW1-WW2 "coffeehouse" history, such as Gerbeard, much as Vienna has its Sperl, so you should highlight them on your maps and stop into them for the lovely frescos and signature pastries (and chocolate) as well as the coffee break.

How do you find people to travel with?

There's so many trips I want to take and so many places I want to visit but I'm tired of doing so on my own. I've traveled all over Western and Eastern Europe as well as North America but I've only done so solo. I'd like someone I can cut costs with, plan trips together, share adventures and knowledge with, provide company to, actually do things with, etc. Meeting people in hostels is okay if you want to walk around aimlessly through the city together and then forget about them forever once you leave but other than that it's no good.

All of my friends either have no interest in traveling, have no money to travel, or only care about flying to some exotic place just to get drunk. How do I find people who are actually open to genuinely experiencing traveling and not just want to stay in the hostel bed until 1pm and then get drunk every other night until they eventually pass out at 4am?

Is there a website where you can meet other travelers? Hell, I'd even be open to meeting other people from /trv/ to see things with. I literally don't know where else to look and find someone I can journey with.

Memes aside, I wouldn't mind it but it's not like I can just get the perfect girlfriend overnight. Women also come with some extra liability too. You pretty much need to exclude any strenuous physical or outdoors activities and keep an eye on her.

I have a girlfriend but we haven't traveled together once in two years. We've taken a few short, in-state trips, but I've done all of my traveling overseas exclusively by myself. Now, having said that, I do think it'd be enjoyable to go somewhere with her - the problem is that we both work. She's already graduated university but lives with her parents, as is the norm in her culture. Most of her yearly vacation time goes to whatever family trip her mom put together, which is usually back home to India.

Anyway, as I said, I've never traveled with anybody else. Without a single exception, every time I've gone to another country I've stepped on and off the plane entirely unaccompanied.

Traveling by yourself is easy. If you want to travel with somebody else, you stay at a hostel for a half second and you'll make friends for a day, a night, or a week. I've kept in contact with some hostel people for years. As I think is often said on /trv/, traveling alone only entails being alone when you choose to be.

Not sure why people are so reluctant to go themselves.

In my case, I prefer traveling for at least a few weeks or months at a time. It's hard to find anybody who can do that. Since neither I nor any of my student friends are rich, I don't bother asking around, because I know nobody is going to have the proper amount of time and money allotted to go here or there. Plus, I genuinely enjoy being able to decide where I want to go and how I want to get there on the spur of the moment without any major interference from anybody else.

We will stay in Barcelona for a week. What are some good places outside of Barcelona for a short day trip?

Local here. It depends on what type of transportation you have available.

To be honest, the best places are only reachable by car. Anyway, here are some places you might wanna check out:

- The Costa Brava (the coast in the north of Catalonia). Some of the bigger towns, e.g. Platja d' Aro are reachable by public transport (bus), although like I said there are some hidden gems (e.g. Llafranc or Calella de Palafrugell; I absolutely recommend those places) and I don't think they are reachable by public transport.

- Sitges. It's a coast town about one hour from Barcelona by train. It's not as cool as the Costa Brava in terms of nature but has a really cool vibe to it (and is world famous for its gay community, >implying). To give you some perspective, my girlfriend is Dutch and my in laws are currently visiting for a few days, and we are going to be taking them there tomorrow because of how easy it is to reach and due to the fact you still get dat dere Spanish coast village feeling going on.

- Montserrat. Touristy af but also super easy to reach. Essentially, it is a rocky mountain with a rocky temple on top.

tl:dr

Assuming you have no private tranportation available, I'd go for either Sitges or take a bus to some place at the Costa Brava (although the Costa Brava is a bit far away, so it might be worth it to stay for one night). Montserrat might also be your thing; just google it for more info.

Are you interested in amusement parks or aquatic parks?

I'll be thinking of more interesting places while I wait for your answer.
>>

Parks Guy here. I'm going to recommend you a couple cities to visit. They are geographically far, but you can get there in about an hour or hour and half (train or car).

>Figueres

Beautiful city, lots of historic places, Dali museum.

>Girona

If you somewhat know what to look for, the streets are interesting as fuck, lots of small monuments. It's like a big city, but with less people and silenter.

I feel dumb because I am from a town near Barcelona, but I have a hard time thinking of places that would interest a tourist. I'll keep thinking. I'm trying to help.

I posted a thread in /adv/ but I might as well ask here too.

It's break and my parents want to go on a family vacation while I'm still home. They asked me about places I want to go, and my number one choice is Japan since I have friends there, as well as weebshit. Thing is, I don't think I would be comfortable going with parents. Last year when I went to Japan alone, I really enjoyed not being dragged around to places I didn't want to go, and not having relatives look through my purchases. My parents and I don't share the same interests and I feel that if we were to take a vacation to Japan, it wouldn't be an enjoyable experience for anyone.
I'm also not sure how well they'd react to seeing エロ本 at 7/11
In Thailand you can get a retirement via with proven 25K USA in the bank, or 2K income a month. In Phillipines you can get a retirement Visa with 10K in the bank, so I'd use these as benchmarks for annual living

In Phils you can retire as early as 35 as long as you have the cashish.

Wew lads! Time for yet another India general!

I'm the same guy who made the last few. I lived in New Delhi for about a year or year and a half and have been to India half a dozen times since 2013. I recently left my job and am going back in August and staying until January. I'll be doing some freelance work and taking online classes before heading home to finish my current degree program.

Feel free to ask whatever. I've spent my fair share of time in the tourism industry and can probably give advice on many parts of India that I haven't visited. Not an expert on festivals and stuff, though, as I'm not too interested in spiritualism or religion in general. I'm sure there are other /trv/elers who are well-versed. Had some really interesting folks in the last thread.

I know there's another India thread, but I wanted to start something more positive. Helps me get excited to write about India when I'll be heading back in a few months.

Probably going to visit a buddy in Nepal, so feel free to give me advice on there.

Hey there again, just got back from 2 weeks in India and just wanted to thank you again for the advise. Of the places I visited I rank them Jaipur > Delhi > Dharamshala > Amritsar > Agra > Rishikesh.

I hear a lot of good things about Poverty Valley, strangely enough. Should of went there instead of the shithole tourist town that is Rishikesh.

Also, try as I might, I couldn't find any food I really loved and the "spicy" that I kept hearing about was less painful spicy and more overbearing.

Noice m8. I think I remember you from the last general and am happy that you enjoyed some of the places I recommended.

Six trips to India and I still haven't been to Jaipur. I'll be back in a month and will have to stop making excuses and check it out. What did you like about it so much? Also, what did you see and do in Delhi? I can't remember whether I gave you any suggestions for the city, but I'm happy you liked it nevertheless.

I'm going on a road trip to Colorado to explore a good amount of it.

I've never left south FL and want to see more cities and terrain and people than the flat swampland this is.

Renting a car in Miami then going to Orlando to go to Kennedy Space Center the next day to see a rocket launch.

Then from there going to St. Augustine -> Atlanta -> Chattanooga,TN -> Nashville -> Memphis -> Little Rock -> Fort Smith, AR -> Oklahoma City -> Albuquerque -> Four corners then enter Colorado.

Reason for this post is if anyone can recommend any places or things to see on my route that either in the cities I have planned or along the way.

Also any tips for traveling alone? This is my first time doing anything like this but I feel capable.

Every time I travel I go through the same circus. Look for shoes, settle on something that's too narrow by buying two sizes bigger. Feet rock back and forth in the shoe, destroying the insoles, savaging the rear area of the shoes, and giving me mad callus.
