What magical/mythological/folklore creatures would make a good house pets in average fantasy setting?
154 posts and 66 images submitted.
>>
I think ever gay sparkly dog deviantart makes
>>
- Small breeds of gryphons like blue jay/house cat
- jackalopes because it's just a rabbit with antlers
- small drakes, they are just dog sized lizards
- with little bit of magic they could have a fish in a floating bubble of water follow them around
- elemental salamanders

Hermits and wizards might have
- giant spiders
- small chimeras
- homonculi

For higher social status people they could have more exotic pets like
- pseudo dragons
- fairy dragons
- tamed small hydras
- de-clawed cockatrice
>>
>>54302924
You could also magic up some of the more mundane pets.
>Semi aquatic cats with scaly skin and fins. They can be kept in a house but require ready water access.
>Long legless dachshunds which slither around like snakes. They wrap around those they show affection to rather than licking them.
>Brilliantly colored koi which "swim" through the air. They can recognize faces and often beg for food.
>Medium sized tortoises which carry soil on their shells for camouflage in the wild. Owners often grow small moss gardens or bonsai on the turtle's backs.

Making History edition

Warmasters Triumvirate is an attempt at creating yet another 40k AU. The Primarchs have changed, and instead of appointing a single Warmaster upon returning to Terra, the Emperor is critically wounded on Ullanor. In order to make sure the Great Crusade continues, the Warmasters' Triumvirate is put in place. Tensions start running high and this eventually culminates in a civil war between Loyalists, Chaos Traitors and Separatists...

Let's at least try to get this set straight. If an evil creature shows certifiably true intent and desire to repent and redeem themselves, is it still the paladin's job to smite? Despite killing a potential convertee?

For an example, let's go over the top. There's a thaumologist who pings as evil. The town he lives in supports his actions. He's trying to stop a curse which would trigger a calamity, which in turn would reduce everything to ash, killing the entire population of a world. Including several million good people. The thaumologist even went as far as to turn himself into a lich/dhampir/other immortal being and bound the curse to himself to prevent it from triggering when the old man who initially carried it dies of old age. So, in essence, killing this man kills everyone else. Because the curse is effectively the creator god's reset button and he believes the world needs to be rebooted from starDOSt again, he's made the man ping as evil. The paladin, who isn't a follower of the creator god knows none of this other than what the thaumologist told him about the curse and how he's holding it back and trying to remove it, under threat of smiting. The chaotic neutral rogue and the lawful evil cleric have both confirmed he speaks the truth. Despite this, the paladin sees him ping as evil.

Does the paladin smite? And if he does, does he fall?

You go kill the god in that situation.
>>
>>54365668
The thaumologist, and byu extension the paladin, only knows there's a curse that causes everything to die being held back by the thaumologist, not that there's a creator god who cast it in the first place. And the paladin only has the words of the thaumologist, the rogue and the cleric that the thaumologist is telling the truth.

No deicide for you until the pally finds out there is a creator god directly responsible for this.

Hey /tg/ ready for story time? I hope so.

Now a little bit of backstory before I make you fall head first into this dank crevice.
October of last year I had watched all of the Godzilla movies in a marathon in preparation of watching a pirated copy of Shin Godzilla (since it only showed in select theaters) and I fell in love with it. At the time I was also planning to run a D&D campaign, but I didn't know what on so using a bit of homebrew and the Airship Pirates system I made my own game and around the middle of November I DMed the following campaigns.

The first campaign was about five of my players as Japanese biologists in the government as weird things have been going on with the environment. Whale corpses are washing up on beaches and radiation is spreading through the sea in small pockets before disappearing, this fucked up the ecosystem around Japan quiet a bit so initially the campaign was really kinda boring.
Several sessions in I would just have them go and see what weird shit is happening and to see their reasoning for it, one player even voiced her concerns about the game, but I told her there was nothing to worry about and I was just trying something new. None of them knew about the second game I was running.

I told one of my friends about the campaign I was planning to do. You see I was just gunna have Godzilla be an NPC controlled by me, but after a long discussion my friend convinced me to let him play in the campaign...as Godzilla.

Now before I go even further into the story here was the system I set up.
The sessions would work as turns in a sense.
One session we would spend with the humans as they try and predict where Godzilla would pop up next. They would also have to deal with Japanese politics along with International politics as well. Deploying the Defense Force and researching new ways to deal with Godzilla were also part of the game as well as you'll soon see.

The next turn however was a little bit different...

Godzilla's turn in the beginning of the campaigns was a little bit strange. The sessions would mostly go with my friend who I will be calling Frank going around the ocean collecting energy and mutating. Frank would also have to stay under the radar of the Japanese/World governments. I would also like to point out that my human team didn't know of Frank and the other game. Made Godzilla a much more formidable foe in the end.

Now for about three sessions I had my human players doing pretty basic work. They would go to a location take samples study it and that's it really. Their theory was that the Fukushima radiation spill was really fucking things up in the ocean, and while they couldn't explain the disappearing pockets of radiation they "could" explain the other happenings. Or so they thought because while I had them fucking around with dead animal corpses Frank was going on a fucking rampage.

He was attacking nuclear subs like a fucking madman, stealing the precious cargo within and in a very short amount of time he managed to rack up so much MP (Mutation Points) he believed he was ready for the reveal. And how right he fucking was.

He starts by mutating into Godzilla's first form "seen" in the movie and moves into Tokyo Bay. Water begins boiling and a red substance is seen spreading throughout the water.

My human team begins getting ready for what they think is just another job.
>cont
>>
The Japanese government starts evacuating citizens from the area due to reports of volcanic activity. My humans get to the scene in only and hour and set up a small base to see what the fuck is going on. Soon reports and rumors of a giant creature make their way to base and the team is freaking the fuck out, then a massive tail sprouts out of the water and begins waving around.

They all shit their collective pants and pack the fuck out of there before seeing Frank start to move into the water canals. Once they get back to HQ they're immediately bombarded with questions by not only high ranking officials, but the Prime Minister himself. They start trying to form a plan as Frank finally makes his way on land.

At this point he's already evolved into Kamata-kun and is barreling down streets as fast as his legs will carry him. The local police try and stop him with various blockades and weaponry, but he makes all of his rolls and tells them all to fuck off with a headbutt to the everything. It's only when tanks begin to show up does Frank get serious. He charges a tank column at full speed taking shots as he does so. While Frank is throwing tanks around like chew toys the humans are trying to mount a full scale offensive with helicopters and the works.

The team is analyzing everything about Frank as he fights the tanks. Everyone is very hopeful as the tanks are beginning to do a number on Frank since he's still just a wee babe. It isn't until the helicopters arrive does Frank get spooked and evolves into Shinagawa-kun. The team shits their collective pants again and the Prime Minister allows all forms of weapon be used against Frank, and to make matters worse Frank is running out of steam and needs to get the fuck outta there. He does manage to escape albeit heavily injured.

Why is it that humans are constantly and consistently depicted as the quintessential race and culture within the bounds fantasy? This is especially prevalent (and notorious) in Dungeons & Dragons.

They're always portrayed as having the most land, resources and overall influence compared to other nations
Shorter lifespans? Means jack shit for some reason. They apparently learn and adapt in decades what takes centuries for the other races. Immortal humans? My god.
Think elves are the masters of magic? Nope, humans have pushed it further and produced far greater wizards.
The gods themselves are modeled after the fucking homo sapiens, what gives? Were all the gods originally human or do they favor them above the others?

They're also almost always white, privileged or not.
What the fuck is this?

Human writers, human readers, easier to self-insert that way, nobody got Lovecrafts point, but rather fellate ourselves in fictional works because reality is harsh.

It sometimes doesn't even make much sense if you think things through and ultimately just amounts to writers bias. Personally I'm tired of it, there is nothing original or engaging about it and most of the time I'm not even sure what the author wants to tell me with it.

>>
>>54365088
Depends on what they're fighting and what the character is. I generally avoid describing misses as 'you miss' in favour of enemies defending themselves successfully or taking an otherwise telling blow on armour. It makes the character seem competent and the enemy threatening.

I find excuses to use ghouls, minotaurs and illithids in battles a lot.

My favourite battle I ever ran as a DM was the PCs vs a rival adventuring party that consisted of
>Minotaur Wizard leader
>Troll Fighter
>Umber Hulk Monk
>Illithid Assassin
>Displacer Beast Rogue

Highlights included the party Strength Cleric and Barbarian bullrushing and pinning the troll fighter into a bonfire and the Illithid activating the post hypnotic suggestion it planted in the parties dark elf rogue 5 sessions earlier and making him eviscerate the party sorcerer.

Good times. Two of the PCs survived and them having to rez the rest of the party segued them into the next part of the story.

I cast imbue with spell ability and transfer righteous might to the fighter. I then cast bull's strength on the fighter. He has multi-classed into barbarian, so he rages. He now has +12 strength, and his duel-wielded bastard swords now do 2d8 each due to an increase in size category.

The fighter has an artifact called the "belt of battle", which means he has a total of 12 attacks at 13th level when he activates it.

He has a potential damage output of 24d8+180, if all attacks hit, barring any critical hits.

I've heard of things more broken than this, but still, this is pretty ridiculous. The thing is, we now have a nuke in our pocket in the form of the fighter and the cleric buffing him.

We're going to abuse the shit out of this, probably.

Is there anything I can do to further buff the fighter as a Level 13 Cleric with access to 7th level spells and a wisdom score of 25?

Picture related, it's what I'd imagine my fire genasi cleric to look like.

Normally you're not allowed to cast so high level of spells, and the school transmutation isn't supported by Imbue with Spell ability.

But my DM says "through a miracle of Kossuth I'll allow it"

So I dunno. We bent the rules a bit.
