>Old-school Dungeons & Dragons
>10-level dungeon underneath a fiendish temple
>Party of four: a precocious boy wizard raised by gypsies; a cowardly gentleman technologist; a reckless dwarf warrior with no self-control; and That Guy, a mysterious brooding sociopathic assassin
>Campaign goes on for many weeks, party explores the dungeon. Players develop their character's unique ticks.
>Boy wizard becomes a master manipulator and magnificent bastard
>Gentleman technologist's signature move: using steam-powered jetpack to escape from anything remotely threatening
>Reckless dwarf drinks, gets drunk, kicks down doors, kills monsters
>Edgelord assassin knifes anything that moves and keeps the victims' eyes as a trophy.

>At the bottom of the dungeon is Fenrir, guarding a portal
>Party can't kill a wolf-god, they run for the portal
>Teleported to Barsoom. Part 2 of the campaign, everyone's crazy strong and can jump like John Carter
>Reckless dwarf dies after Leeroy Jenkins charge at a small ARMY of green Tharks

Then, sweet comeuppance:

>Party does the Princess of Mars thing, saves the world, back to "Earth"
>They have to visit the underworld to resurrect the dwarf. Meet Charon, board the ferry across the River Styx
>Only, the boat won't move.
>Eyeless souls in the river holding it back.
>That Guy literally in tears as his character has to dump his bag of trophy eyeballs into the river to move the game along.

How was that That Guy? Keeping the eyes didn't seem too out of place. That just seems like the DM being clever and hooking in something the character did.

Keeping body parts from victims in a game where you can't use them to make potions is *always* That Guy behavior.

Pastebin shit: http://pastebin.com/2MSV2Y8m
(contains info dumps, summaries, and other crap; not up to date because of procrastination)

You are Hauptmann Lukas Weisenkranz, a company commander of the venerable Grossreich of Czeiss, servant and acquaintance of Kaiser Adam Paulus. You are currently participating in the Invasion of Delschau, a company commander of the Reich.

The Grossreich has declared war upon the illegitimate states of Strosvald and Delschau, after decades of tolerating their disrespect of their fatherland could no longer be tolerated, as in times of great need they let the calls for aid to the Reich go unheeded. Their contempt for the Grossreich must have been great, as their miserable armies offered little resistance to the invincible will of the Kaiser.

In Delschau you bowled over the defenses of the enemy without much trouble. Strosvald seemed to be even less competent. You had heard that many of the lesser lords of Strosvald had turned their coats in return for promises of autonomy over their wealth and lands, betraying their own countrymen without thought. Such behavior could never be found in a citizen of the Grossreich.

Suffice it to say you felt that the conquest of these lands could only be beneficial to the world. The hope of an everlasting peace under an endless empire seemed a naïve goal to you; all empires of history had crumbled, and there were empires before them that were mere dust in the wind. Such an ambition seemed out of place coming from a man who had shared your experience in a hopeless war, yet somehow he had seemed as earnest as when you had first met when he outlined his plans and his need for you and his other comrades.

It was initially amusing in a way, but the ideas took hold somewhere that you thought you had forgotten forever.

You and a section of your forces had broken through the enemy lines, yet managed to avoid an enemy counterattack that is now running up against your reorganizing platoons. You ordered the platoons accompanying you, 3rd and 5th, a tank platoon and a heavy tank platoon respectively, to hold the village and the road you had just taken against further Delschau reinforcements.

You would teach the unblooded soldiers-for-the-holiday of this resort nation to fear the might of the Kaiser.

It is not long before you encounter what appears to be the enemy. They are ununiformed, only identifiable as enemy troops by their weapons and yellow armbands. Most likely militiamen, drawn up from the local territory to bolster the numbers of the defenders. They appear to lack any heavy weaponry, likely not having been trained in their use. They were filler soldiers, their only purpose being to shoot and hide.

From your position in a stunted litter of evergreens you observe a G-230 dive in. They scatter like rats as the fighter bomber’s machine guns stitch their way across their group. The strafing run does not seem to have had a great effect; the enemies were able to disperse enough in the long grass to minimize casualties.

However, the close presence of the plane appears to have masked your approach. Their backs are turned to you as you close in.

>break through their formation and hurry to the more substantial troops; this chaff will not hold on its own

>methodically destroy the militia; the possibility of being surrounded is unacceptable

>Find a way around them and try to remain undetected

“What the fuck is that!?” screams Thorn.

“It’s a Super Pershing!” yells Rascal. The big fat gun barrel swivels around to Rascal, immediately picking up on her noise. “… and it’s about to kill me. RUN!” A loud buzzing noise pierces the air. As you grab Thorn who’s still caught under the rubble, you see the end of the barrel glow intensely red. Rascal, Greta, and Aurelia scatter.

“Guys!” you yell. They all look back.

“No!” Greta immediately runs over to you and bodyblocks you and Thorn. The Pershing fires. The bunker is blasted apart. Concrete and rebar are sent flying everywhere. Drones within a small radius are immediately disintegrated. You feel the hot warmth of fire all around you, washing around Greta’s shields. The Pershing steps back, turning its body down on you once again, trying to search for you all.

The three of you lie beneath a pile of snow and ice that had fallen upon you. Judging by the fact that you can feel all of your limbs be stung by searing heat, you’re fine. “Greta?” you whisper. “Are you okay?”

“As I’ll ever be,” she croaks, groaning as she lays on top of you two. “Thorn?”

“A-OK,” she mutters.

You blink. “Rascal and Aurelia! They-“ The Pershing shovels the snow off you, immediately locking its cannon onto you two. “Get her out now!” You and Greta grab Thorn hastily, then rip her right out of the rubble like a bandage. She yells in pain, one of her Strikers sparking and crackling. It’s been damaged severely. Thorn might just be out of this fight. Damn it, you need Thorn! You need everybody! Its turret swivels around to you, ready to fire again.

Only for Rascal to jump onto the turret, screaming and firing point blank into the shell. Her shots go through, but the insides regenerate faster than she can damage it. Aurelia too tries to hop on, only to hang off the hull, kicking her legs in the air as she tries to get up.

“Greta, get Thorn to safety!” She nods, pulling Thorn deeper into the bunker. Another drone tries his luck on you. But you quickly smash him into the ground and blast him with a burst. The huge crater the six of you are in now is actually working in favor of you. The debris and rubble are sending the smaller drones into chokepoints, meaning they can only come in at most one or two at a time.

But there’s still this Pershing to deal with! With Rascal and Aurelia hanging off of him, you’re not sure…

So, uh, let's try this again. Hopefully this is a better starting time. Posting the last post from last night.

Information first, you decide. Ignoring his question, you instead present to him one of your own.

"So you and Laura... Laura really has no idea?"

"No," Mark responds vehemently, shaking his head. "You really think I would tell Laura if I was so worried about you finding out?"

"So you're saying that Laura's a blabbermouth," you say dryly.

Mark snorts. "No, I meant that this is really, really important, and that you should let me get started on the mindwiping thing before they notice that we've been gone for too long."

You wave off his worries. "They're drunk and sleepy, it'll be fine. And nice try, but you're not getting anywhere near my head."

Before he can respond, you continue. "Anyways, what's with the spikes coming out of your back? You realize you've got holes in your shirt now, right?"

Mark tugs at his shirt and mutters a curse word. "You don't need to know," he says stubbornly.

You take a closer look at him. The spines grew either during or after you were beating him up, but they seem to have stopped growing now. Two are around his shoulder blades, and one seems to be coming from his tailbone and poking up from beneath waist of his jeans. You try to get a better look, but he just frowns and scoots to face you.

Mark is getting restless and looks like he's about to say something. You realize that you should probably do something and either knock him out or try to convince him. You're reluctant to continue with the physical violence, however, as he has been your good friend so far and Laura really seems to like him. Comparing how studious and uptight Laura was in high school to the way she's opened up now, Mark's relationship with her might not be so bad.

Still, he is some kind of seduct...tress? er? You can't completely trust what he's saying.

You consider calling Susan, but the thought of running to her for every issue leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You're not going to be much of an agent if you can't take care of yourself, and besides, this issue seems to be within your capabilities to handle.

>Tell him what you are and attempt to convince him

You punch the wall several more times, as if strength alone could break this space and let you go back to the real world.

Jessica is in danger out there. You aren't sure who or what it was that broke down the door to the warehouse; but if they're breaking the door down to get inside, chances are high that they're not friendly.

You take a breath. There's nothing you can do for her now. From the moment you hit 'yes', you resigned yourself to being out of the real world for an hour...

You'll just have to hope that Jess can hold her own against who or what ever is there. Because the truth is that in here, Abigail, Safi, and Boss are all in danger as well.

And you. But you know what you can handle. And at the very least whenever you've surprised yourself over the last few weeks, it's been in a good way.

Your hands are shaking, and you're feeling antsy. This feeling of restlessness just won't seem to quit, no matter how much you try to shake it. But maybe that's not such a bad thing...

Sup /tg/.

All of us who've run games know that things go sideways easily - you have to keep things together without the players realizing that you're directing them, or how much of the session you're pulling out of your ass. For a project, myself and a bunch of other DMs are putting together a care package - a pdf for download that will have a whole bunch of game resources.

At present, we've got the following:

Adventure hooks - a few hundred, divided by genre.

NPC Generator tables - a helpful tool to quickly roll up a name, personality, and background for an npc you're generating on the fly, again broken down by genre.

Location generators - similarly, a handy tool to quickly roll up villages, cities, governments, even entire planes, if an unexpected plot direction takes you away from where you've prepared.

Links - online tools, dice rollers, ambient music, tip repositories, the kind of thing that you've relied on in running a game.

Despite the bulk of this, it still feels sparse - not enough of a resource. With that in mind, what else would you add? Anything that goes in has to be strictly text-based; as much as we'd love to, we can't include an actual dice roller in this package.

Also, general DM tip thread - things to help out first time DMs, and the best DM ass-pulls, when your players took your campaign entirely off the rails.

>a bunch of tables aren't going to teach a DM how to improv
>basics of improv

A good point - I actually come from an improv theater background, so the problem for me had always been what to come up with. I usually tried to do the standard D&D thing of plotting out everything, statting NPCs, and figuring out every which way the plot could go.

Then my players got distracted by a carriage with an imperial seal on it that I had put in for plot direction, and I threw away the entire plot for some bullshit about a doupleganger coup that I had to cook up AS I WAS PLAYING.

It was the first, but not the last, time I had to throw away notes.
