Ok so i just got back from a Star City Open in Jersey, and on the way back my buddies and I talked about what kind of new plane we'd like to go to after Shadows Over Innistrad.

One of them suggested going to Kaladesh for the whole Indo-Persian feel, friend 2 suggested Dwarves/Scandanavian and friend 3 came up with Conspiracy, but with Pirates.

Thoughts? WWYD?

What are /tg/'s thoughts on goblins and how are they used in your campaigns?

Have you ever played as one?

i personally like goblins more when they are tribal folk who are just trying to make a living. I like when they aren't locked into being an evil race either. In the campaign I'm in currently the gobbies or gorlops as some racists call them are like above. In the campaign i'm playing a goblin who is a paladin of kord, it's pretty fun.

Why is the hatred for "metagame mechanics" (rules that interact with the players but not their characters, like arranging dice sets for different results, managing whatever version of fate points you use, deliberately having misfortune befall your character for fate points, expending encounter/daily powers, making declarations about the lore of the game world, risk vs. reward based on fairness as a game rather than simulating what would really happen, etc.) much more vocal than the support for them on /tg/?

Is there something about metagame mechanics that causes people who like them to silently nod their heads in approval, while people who hate them go into a frothing rage? Is it because D&D is the ur-RPG that 99% of people play, and D&D teaches that metagaming is worse than Hitler?
56 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
It's pretty much that. Most modern RPGs have some sort of meta-mechanics in them and most people with broad RPG experience are perfectly fine with them. It's the same sort of people who raged and hated D&D 4e (Despite it being a wholesale improvement over 3.PF) just because it was unfamiliar and different. They want to keep playing the same games they've always played, and anything unusual scares and disturbs them.

4e wasn't great, but at least it more or less did what it intended to.

3.PF is awful and has ruined an entire generation of gamers.

Are divinely-ordained kings the best form of government?

Even with fallible gods, it seems like it's in everyone's best interest to have a person selected and backed by a good god to be made head of state.

Or, is it more important for a ruler to be democratically elected, so that the populace will ideally take responsibility for their government?

>>
>>43900031
If gods were real then yeah.
>>
>>43900083

That depends on the god though. If the god is benevolent to all beings then maybe it could work; if it's benevolent to just its followers and has a "smite the non-believers" stance then religious freedom might go down the drain; meanwhile, if the god is an asshole then you might have problems.
>>
No form of government is a good government if it lacks princesses and princes who can pretend to be princesses.

Doesn't it seem kind of silly that having an odd-numbered stat like 15 or 17 is no different than having a stat at the lower value?
The only point of having a stat at that kind of value is for leveling up.

I mean, explain it away as much as you what, but as far as I can tell it seems kind ridiculous.
I feel like, if a character has 17 to strength, they should just have 17 strength not 16.What if your characters don't really level up? Are you just supposed to make their stats even numbered each time?
What if through some effect, you manage to increase a stat from 12 to 13? Does that raise mean nothing?

You might say its too little of a difference to mean anything, that its more like some weird measure of experience or something. But I don't know about that.. I mean 18 to 20 is the difference between peak human ability, and a demigod and 12 to 14 is the difference between a notably strong person and a relative brute.

When you really think about it, there is a lot of middle ground between these two stages. That's just a fact, and to me it feels like you're missing out on the possibility of making a character feel more detailed and tangible while at the same time bringing undo awareness to how a character's stats look instead of what they mean.

Shouldn't there be some kind of actual benefit here independent from leveling or rare effects?

I'll never get over this shit.

Let me ask you DM's a question. It might get a bit /pol/y so forgive me. What are humans like in your game? Do you base them off of a certain culture or race of people? Such as in my fantasy games if there is an empire it is Always roman, perhaps modified to fit the times but roman in nature. If i go to spacey or more advanced it because more slavic, and thats mostly because of some of my personal preferences. Also will be dumping my greentexts

Anyone else here read these books? They sound like a great setting to run a game in.

Acidic seas with giant creatures, magic fueled through bio-"science", steamboats powered by organic engines, mildly eldritch monsters terrorizing the land with equally eldritch monster hunters and an crime underworld of necromancy and monster fighting pits.

I ask you /tg/, what rulebook would be best to run a Monster Blood Tattoo game?

You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

After paying Nerillian's daughter Sibylle a visit, you returned to the palace and spoke with Lord Bernadotte about the councilmen opposed to the crusade. He offered you some advice on how to convince them, then you made your way to the meeting room. It's time for the first council meeting to begin, hopefully you're ready.

“Please be seated, the High Council Meeting will begin shortly."

You take a seat at the long table. Laurentius seats himself next to you, and the honor guard stands in the back behind you. A moment later, Lord Bernadotte enters the room as well, and takes his seat opposite you and Laurentius.

“Where is his highness?” Laurentius asks.

“His highness is resting in his room. He says he feels ill, but reaffirmed his previous stance on the matter of the crusade.” One of the councilmen responds, an elf with a trimmed beard.

“His majesty really should get rid of that useless healer. First the prince, now him.” Another grumbles, this one an elderly man with a bald head covered in liver spots.

“For once, I believe we're in agreement Moeller.” Lord Bernadotte agrees. “Regardless, if his majesty will not be attending today's meeting, then let us call this meeting to order.”
>>
>>43898380
“Right then. As first order of business, I believe we should continue our previous discussion about the new tariffs on-”

“With all due respect, Traultmann, I believe that topic can be saved for later.” The bearded elf interjects. “Besides, our guests have come a long way, it would be impolite to delay the matter which they've come all this way to discuss.”

“Daffner has a point. Are there any objections to starting with the matter of the crusade?” Lord Bernadotte asks.

No one raises their hand. Lords Traultmann and Moeller frown, but say nothing.

“Good, then let's start with our guests. I believe neither Siegfried nor the good Captain require any introduction, so let's jump to the heart of the matter.”

“Yes, let's do that. Tell us Champion, why should we send you men and resources for something that has consistently failed time and time again?” Lord Moeller says, not even trying to hide the venom in his words.

You feel a pang of irritation from Galadriel at the old councilman's words. Something tells you this is going to be a very long meeting for her.

You are Irue Valen, and the little sculpture in front of you won't shut up. It's been talking incessantly since you entered the room, and you've started to boggle at the idea that this may actually be what it was supposed to do. To make matters worse, this room is by far the coldest place you've encountered since you arrived - Which is saying something, considering you were currently standing inside of a glacial palace. You had been forced to fight a persistently frigid gale coming up the stairs just to reach this room, and now that you had arrived, it wouldn't be inaccurate to describe the swirling snow flurries and constantly whipping winds as a localized indoor storm.

One which, you note disdainfully, has been furiously blowing past you and back down the stairs you had come up. This wouldn't be an issue, if the strong winds weren't currently threatening to take you with them in their whirlwind escape.

You take a moment to shift your feet, breaking the encroaching ice that has been steadily attempting to overtake you since you began the descent into this Atelier, and refocus on the task at hand. You felt like you had gathered nearly enough pieces to start making sense of this whimsical winter wonderland, and this place practically boasted itself to be an important part of those pieces. Your dark red eyes narrow at the constantly chattering sculpture, the only truly notable object in the room, as it continues its one-sided dialogue.

This thing, like the king and queen before it, seemed to believe you were family. If all things previous held true, then that would make this a statue of that errant daughter's little brother. While the detail itself was innocuous enough, one discrepancy nagged at the corner of your mind.

Why hadn't you heard of them until now?

This was the previous royal line.

Though usually unwelcome, the contemplative voice broke into your own thoughts with a baffling line. You close your ears to the small sculpture's incessant prattling in order to pay more attention. "You figured out who this was?"

No. I was interested in Mana, not royal lineage... But I think I may have an idea. Did you know that the royal family currently on the throne was not the one originally leading La'Fiel?

You remain silent. You knew what Irue knew, and their memories were an open book to you... Which meant nothing if you didn't know where to read, or what you were looking for.

What we know as the 'Royal Family' is more a title for the current crown's line of succession. In other words, it's an office to be held, rather than a bloodline. It just so happens that office can be passed down in a hereditary manner.

"So what does that have to do with this place? Did they get taken over by force or something?" You grit your teeth against the chill, wishing your shadow would get to the point already.

It's more accurate to say that they expired, leaving the throne empty. While I can't speak for the specifics of the family, I remember reading that their daughter refused inheritance, citing the call of Mana to go on pilgrimage. She was exceedingly adept with the manipulation of wind, so when her behaviour began to change through-out the pilgrimages, it was of little surprise to the Shrine that she eventually vanished. Most had theorized she had finally crossed the line and become an Aeon of Jinn.

"We're standing inside of a giant ice palace, in an underwater spring, guarded by countless Undine apparitions, and you're telling me this place was made by an Aeon of Jinn?" You deadpan blithely.
>>
It was the prevailing theory, and what history has recorded. However, your scepticism is accurate. There are... Discrepancies. For one, I do not recall any mention of a second child. If there had been two children, the dedication of the daughter to the Mana would not have caused the family line to end, and the throne to become empty.

You narrow your eyes at the sculpture which has been cheerfully informing you of its various adventures and escapades as the wind within the room swept against you with a bitter chill.

As for the other... From what we've learned, the daughter wasn't a talkative person. By all rights, she seemed the most subdued of the family. Those aren't qualities that Jinn favours.

"Then, this sculpture...?"

Yes. The queen mentioned it, but signs of favour which were strong enough to elicit a calling to pilgrimage can typically be seen from a young age. Jinn favours freedom, flights of whimsy, and light heartedness. In other words...

"It wasn't the sister that Jinn was calling, but the brother."

Hey /tg/ my character is being hunted by my paladin brother in game. I killed our parents as part of a ritual to gain cool warlock powers. When we meet I just knock him unconcious and frame him for various crimes or just take all his shit and hang him from a flagpole.
So far I have:
Killed some hookers and left him naked in the room with them
Killed every guard in the jail and locked him in a cell
Buried him alive
Hung him from a flag pole.

I don't want to kill him because I am having a lot of fun. Any ideas on how I can drive hum insane?
