I want to get into wargaming but I'm not interested in miniatures at all.
What can I do? Can I play miniature based games with something else?

Hex maps and cardboard chits, like they did back in the 70s.

It's almost as expensive as miniatures, but at least you don't have to paint anything.

You could actually use cardboard chits and a paper map with any miniatures rule set. It'd take some small amount of jury-rigging, but it's doable.

>It's almost as expensive as miniatures
REALLY?! Why?

i want to create a setting in a postapocalypse that revolves around a supernatural winter. like, really, really, really cold with everything being frozen and shit.

theres the basic idea, now its your turn. Any ideas? How did it happen? Why did it happen?
any additional ideas?

also: scientifically speaking, how cold can it possibly be? is there some maximum?

Look up Fimbulwinter for some mythological ideas about a snowpocalypse, OP

>is there a maximum cold?

Yes, it's 0 degrees Kelvin or -273 Celsius. The coldest recorded natural temperatures on Earth are around -90 Celsius. Liquid nitrogen is about -200 Celsius, but you have to artificially create it.

On the other end, there is no maximum temperature, or at least not one we could possibly detect anyways. The Sun's corona is between 1 and 5 million degrees Celsius.
>>
>>44326232
They actually created a gas at negative kelvin a few years ago.
>>
>>44325253

Around -40 degrees and up starts becoming impossible to live for humans.

You accept the two bloody fangs so large they look like they came out of a monstrous animal's mouth.

You suppose that that isn't too far from the truth.

You hate taking the fangs of your kills. It makes you feel like some sort of deranged serial killer collecting trophies. But its what Father Costilla expects of you. And you know it could be worse. Hunters from his generation have been known to preserve the entire head of their kills. Sometimes they even use them to decorate the reliquaries of their favorite saints. You heard that St. Denis in particular likes to be honored with vampire heads.

"There's something weird the two of you need to see" Father Costilla says motioning for you and Abdiel to follow him deeper into the mansion's ruins. "I hope it means less than I what I imagine it to mean."

"It's...well its something you two need to see, yeah." Benny says slowly stepping over plant golem remains. His bomb-proof suit barely squeezes through the hallways.

So /tg/ since the only cannon 40k only movie is shit why don't we make a list of some amazing "not 40k" 40k films that everyone should watch. I'll go ahead and list my suggestions starting with the most obvious

Starship Troopers -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y07I_KER5fE

Event Horizon -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THxBHDsgTDw

Frankensteins army -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMUQ2IMuz8o

I'd like to hear any other movies /tg/ would add to this list.

Telematha was a strange world. When the planet was starting to get colonized by the first Techpriests and Magos it was decided that due to the high levels of underwater sources and the colder temperatures that were found down there only the members of the Cult Mechanicus would be allowed to stay in those cavernous locations were the living standards were slightly better; the sun scalded surfaces would only have small settlements and massive fields of spaceports, solar energy gatherers and titanic warehouses for the Merchant fleets.

Then, aeons ago the proliferation of underground forges and metropolii under the charred and barren soil of Telematha created a huge problem with the planet’s delicate ecosystem; above the ground level the temperatures were so high and the air so thin that an increase in the proportion of carbon monoxide would have turned the atmosphere completely irrespirable and transform the surface into a dead world. This didn’t bothered much to the local Mechanicus priesthood because they weren’t personally affected, but if the planet were to become an atmosphere lacking place then the merchants who wanted to transport biological or living materials couldn’t do it as those would degrade or die in such environment.

The priesthood created a Cybertollah to decide what the best resolution was for this situation. Since the stopping of all the forges was something impossible at the end two possible solutions were considered; turning all those settlements and warehouses on the surface into environmentally sealed spaces or creating the Core Needle; a titanic funneling chimney that would gather all the residual toxic smog that was created from the forges and the fabricatorium, with the aid of massive turbines all that smoke and strange gases would be sucked up until it was completely out of the planet where it would be liberated and left it to drift among the many other gas clouds that plague the galaxy.
>>
>>44324417

Ultimately it was decided to create the Core Needle which would completely cross the planet’s crust deep down onto the nucleus of the planet and ascend towards the skies. Such project became an incredibly ambitious moment of the history of Telematha and at the end there was such a massive brainstorm of ideas and suggestions that what would at first be a simple yet gigantic chimney ended becoming much more. It was constructed on the city of Aquacadens and was also repurposed as Space Elevator and Station; across the inner walls of the chimney a series of twenty massive Elevators were built, each capable of transporting a huge amount of people or goods within, the Space Station was finally given the blessed name of “Sigarum Pharus”.

Aquacadens was a strange city. It was a small settlement at first that only mildly stood out due to its great quantity of natural waterfalls and the many hydrokinetic generatoriums that were built around them. With the construction of the Core Needle it experienced a massive boom in mercantile influx and expansionism that quickly turned it into one of the biggest cities of the planet…and all that was now gone.

on the last message I used the word Irrespirable, my bad I meant to say unbreathable

Empty streets and abandoned vehicles lied as far as your augmented eyes could see. Everything was eerily empty and the few poor souls that were around were confused and scared of you. It wasn’t easy making them come with you, but at the end the human necessity of gathering together and the protection that you could give them made the scared servitors, slave citizens and members of the Cult come with you. It seemed that about 99% of the people were now gone, about sixteen million people suddenly banished into nothingness. After little more than two hours exploring and actively searching for survivors you only managed to find seven civilians, six servitors and a mix of eight Skitarii formed from Telemathan warriors and your own men. Those civilians were kids, slave workers and a couple of techpriests; the servitors were mostly designed for work and not combat and the Skitarii were mostly very disparate in the equipment they carried, some of them had heavy ordnance while other were equipped for close combat or sabotage, they weren’t a true regiment and in combat they would lack the equipment and camaraderie needed to survive.

Unable to survive with those few survivors that you found you decide to continue with your mission and descend into the deeper levels of the city, where you would meet the rest of your army and your generals. Curiously enough you had found another city under the already underground city of Aquacadens, it seemed that the city was originally a miner village with only a small fabricatorium that was used to construct toys or whatever the miners might had required. It was unknown if the mine went dry or another motive made them move away but the undercity was now empty and it looked like the best place to hide. You were terrified of the Idea of being attacked by the Necron warriors at any time, your experience with them was null but they seemed to be incredibly strong…

Become The Vampire 19

You send Catherine one last message to see what's going on with her and finally get a reply. It's pretty long, and the time stamp indicates she sent it right around the time that track let out. It's a solid page of eloquently written text, but it basically boils down to:

I have to go to a party tonight, my cousin is making me come along, he doesn't want me hanging out with strangers, I'm sorry about this. Also this message will probably send late, there's poor reception near the pool and my phone got a little waterlogged last time there was a party so it doesn't work properly sometimes. My physics teacher offered to replace it for me but I'm unsure if I should take him up on his offer. If I don't hear back from you, I'll just assume my phone isn't working.

Attached to the message is a text file, a typed version of your compiled notes along with hers, forming the full bible of the religion. It's pretty much exactly what you had in mind, complete with florid prose to obscure the meaning so you can reinterpret it as needed. You send her a quick thank you message letting her know you got the file and hope that her phone starts working again, as well as to call when she's free so you can go over things one last time.

You look at your phone for a few moments. Sammy still wants to hang out, and that should make you happy, but after what the vampires said and her reaction to you hanging out with the paranormal club, you're not so sure. On the one hand, she could just be upset that she couldn't apologize to you properly. Maybe she had something planned to make things up to you? On the other hand, she could take after her mother after all.

>Go hang out with Sammy
>Head back to your room and work on magic stuff
>Head for the pool and check in with Catherine
>Follow up with Jennifer about the trouble brewing at home
>Message Meliora, make sure she's alright

"Cherry, what are you doing in that lantern?" you ask, slowly.

"I was cold," Cherry admits, in a small voice. "Daddy said I should wait right where he left me, but I got cold, and this was warm."

"...How long ago did you daddy leave you?" you ask in a low voice.

"I dunno. Days? I can show you."

You exchange concerned looks with Amy and Nathan, and hold the lantern up. "Alright Cherry. Show me where your daddy told you to wait. You haven't done anything wrong, okay? You were a good girl."

"Yes ma'am," the little ghost says dutifully. The spectral mist within the lantern forms a thin arrow, which points deeper into the woods.

It doesn't take long for the smell to hit you, and the taste of drawn-out, miserable death.

Cherry's body is still slumped against a tree, in a plain, rough dress. The insects have already started to get to her, but she's been dead maybe a week. You don't see any food or water nearby, which means she took, at most, three days to die.

"Daddy said I was too 'spensive," the little ghost explains, wistfully. "So he took me to the forest to wait for a new mommy. He said a new mommy wouldn't care that I'd killed my old one. His face was red."

You draw in a shuddering breath. "What happened to your old mommy?"

"Daddy says I killed her when I was born."

That soulless piece of shit.

> Cherry, where did you live?
> Nathan, Amy, we should...we should bury her mortal form

In our 5th ed game, a nasty evil thing from beyond space and time has begun nomming on the Gods.

The Good Gods get attacked first and several get destroyed - the rest band together to defend creation.

The Evil Gods, meanwhile, decide to get the fuck away from the thing who just ate their the Lord of War's face like it was nothing and take corporeal forms upon the realm of Mortals. Though severely weakened, they're still Gods. How do I make their encounters interesting and different from other fights in case the party runs into them? How would they interact with said evil Gods?

The Gods in the setting are pretty Greek-influenced, so they're not all just evil for the lulz, despite their alignments. They also don't want to destroy the world, because belief and faith = everything in the setting, so they need people who believe in them to remain powerful.

Gods are as follows;

>The Destroyer: Lord of slaughter, destruction and mindless carnage. Appears as a red-skinned brute howling in fury and bearing a battleaxe. Chaotic Evil.

>Lady Lament: Goddess of Misfortune and failure. Appears as a weeping, black-haired woman with a broken sword and a withered bouquet of flowers. Neutral Evil.

>The Despoiler: The goddess of decay, deceit and dishonesty. Appears as a skeletal, withered young woman with a bloody knife in her hands. Neutral Evil.

>The Leviathan: The god of natural disasters, the abyss and unburied dead. Appears as a terrible sea-beast of many eyes and mouths. Chaotic Evil.

>The Collector: The god of disease, famine and poverty. Appears as a gaunt figure riding a sickly horse with a scythe and a heavy bag full of lost souls. Lawful Evil.

>Venal: The vengeance, corruption and tyranny. Appears as a regal man clad in black with a crown of jagged iron, holding a long blade in judgment. Lawful Evil.

>The Queen of Winter: The goddess of winter and the fear of wild and unknown places. Appears as a beautiful, statuesque queen clad in white furs and surrounded by malicious, malnourished white wolves with bloody teeth and claws. Chaotic Evil.

>The Lord of Riots: The god of anarchy, evil urges and excess. Appears as a handsome man splattered in blood standing in a roaring pyre. Chaotic Evil.

>The Adversary: The god of temptation, of hasty action, criminals and prejudice. Appears as a young man beckoning to follow him. Neutral Evil.

>The Keeper: The god of forbidden knowledge, black magic and self-interest. Appears as a black raven. Neutral Evil.

Why bother with alignments at all then?
>>

Because they are still evil and adhere to their alignments, but they are not evil because they are of a certain alignment, they have a certain alignment because they are evil. Y'know?

And besides alignments are a part of D&D. And if I'm going to play D&D, I'm going to use alignments as well.

How do I represent imperial top-caste as utterly corrupt? We are talking immortal archmages here, able to do about anything (as long as they do not interfere with other archmages).

Also do not give me any "avoid being edgy/turns into loli" bullshit.

I want to shock my players. In a single stroke I want to say "absolute power corrupts absolutely and these guys are absolutely corrupt".

At the moment I have an idea of commoner mother being kidnapped along with her kids, bloated by a spell to large proportions and then have her devour her own children in front of archmages who are entertained via a telephatic link with mother and children during dinner.

Even if I know they will pop up, all haters may kindly ignore the thread.

Mindless cruelty and a desire to see people suffer goes a certain distance. One need only look at Yukkiri and Fluffy (god save us all) abuse fandoms to find endless material to that effect created and consumed by NEETs today. There is some primal instinct in many people to watch undeserving things suffer horribly before dying. What I'm saying is, that isn't a fantasy spontaneously developed once one reaches high-level corruption, that's something many people desire even at the lowest rungs of society. Back then we called 'em dog fights.

What distinguishes the powerful is that they have the resources to actually materialize these fantasies, and to live them by tormenting actual people.

Hello again my fellow creators of /tg/. After a very long hiatus on my part, I've returned to continue our EvoGame where we left off.

Those of you not familiar with this how these threads function, I'll give you a brief rundown. The goal of this Game is to see far the evolution of these critters go, and to also see how many days we can keep this running of course. As GM, I'll be actively working to make phylogeny charts to track the evolutions, and also throw in some random events, and extinctions of course to keep this interesting.

In regards to the Phylogeny Charts for the critters of this game thus far, there have been 360 created species, since this began back in October, and 297 still live in this Game. The Phylogeny Charts for these animals can be found in the Imgur link below since the file sizes are too big to post now.

Phylogeny Charts: http://imgur.com/a/zuAl1

Previous EvoGame Threads:
Its suggested you use these for making new creations since all the creatures in the Phylogeny Charts have had their sizes and resolutions adjusted for the charts.

>> 43024144
>> 43050136
>> 43080345

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Adding size increments or names is optional, but would be appreciated.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic
• Roughly every 12 hours I'll add an update Phylogeny Chart to track changes.
• About every 24 hours I'll be rolling for a Random World Event.
• Every 24 hours counts as about 12 million years of time on Planet Evo.
• Have fun

A refresher on the Setting will be on the next following post.

>>
The Setting:
The planet is most similar to Earth during the mid-late ordovician period. Roughly 20-25 mya, the planet a cataclysmic event by a Supervolcano eruption, enveloped the planet in ash. 20% of life was wiped out, but for those that survived, flourished in the fresh new world. The aftermath of the mass volcanic activity, has left Planet Evo today with lush world of fertile seas and lagoons, as well as marshy shorelines and loamy earth, which has become home for the brave pioneers of terrestrial life.

• As life presses on ever more into land, organisms begin to adapt to the differing climates of the three larger landmasses.
• The mountainous Eastern Continent, home of the now dormant Mt. Khornus is lush with fertile grounds for plants, and mix of cold highlands, warm valleys and isolated expanses of freshwater lakes and flatlands.
• The Northwestern Continent is the most land dominated by low to sea-level lands where the grounds are always moist, while more northern regions are found to be dryer and more hilly.
• The Southern Continent is home to the great desert on its northern landmass, where precipitation is rare, while the southern region of the land is known for its welcoming, temperate climate.
• Planet Evo now has about 15% less oxygen in its Atmosphere then compared to Planet Terra of the Sol System. It also contains Nitrogen, Hydrogen, and traces of gaseous heavy metals of the past Ash Cloud.
• In some of the shallower parts of the oceans bare rock has been exposed, a potential substrate for more sessile organisms to easily settle in. These regions of the oceans while, tiny in size are comparably warmer and clearer than else where in the ocean.
• The night skies have been filled with an array of light as of recent. While likely unnoticed by the organisms of the planets, shimmering auroras and meteor showers have been flying over the skies at night. It would appear, according to my probes that a nearby Star has recently destabilized.

I've always been interested in implementation of meta elements into roleplaying games. Has /tg/ any experience doing this? I've heard about a group who played a game on one of the player's cottage and brought a replica handgun with them, and whoever had the replica was also having the only gun in-game. Was some kinda psychological horror-murder-mystery whatever. Another game I heard about a different group playing where I live was they did a tactical espionage action style game and in one session, the DM left his bag in the living room while they were playing, with a phone set on timer to imitate a ticking bomb when the players reached a certain location in-game.

Anyone have any ideas or stories of meta elements affecting the actual game?

There are literally dozens of games that employ rules that engage the players on a meta level. Almost all the narrative "indie"/"storygame" stuf do. And a lot of traditional games from the last decade or two showed an increasing number of mechanics that need decisions on part of the player that have no direct equivalent in the in-game fiction (see all the lucky rerolls, fate points and so on).
Unfortunaltely, some fucker decided that these were "dissociated mechanics" and somehow bad for the game, and that's become a meme in some very vocal fandoms.

That's not really what I meant. Fate or luck points aren't really different from any other powers the characters have at their disposal the way I see it.

I'm actually interested in concrete, real world objects, actions, utterances, etc. having some kind of an effect in game. See what I mean?

I feel the same, anon.

In the mansions of Madness boardgame there is a mechanic of opening safes and rerouting wires that the player has the pieces in front of him and can only swap/move pieces in a round equal times his character int status. I used this in my warhammer fantasy roleplay 3rd edition and worked like a charm. The players loved the "mini puzzles"

What's Guild Ball?

Short answer: The best game you haven't played

Slightly longer answer: Medieval mob ball crossed with gladiator combat from the coliseum.

Long Answer: Guild Ball is a table top skirmish game for a fantasy sport. You win by reaching a set amount of points before your opponent, which are gained by taking out his team, scoring goals, or a mix of the two. Playing Football or focusing entirely on combat are equally viable ways to win.

Teams represent one of the various trade guilds, currently there are 8 playable guilds with more being released next year. Guild ball is simple to pick up but hard to master. Teams are composed of six models, fielding a team for a full sized game costs <$100 USD.

Rules and templates for proxy models are available for free http://guildball.com/#downloads

Abridged Lore:
> Stupid humans are stupid humans and start fighting amongst themselves. Conflicts continue and escalate, strings of wars break out across the entire continent that become known as the Century War
> Century War is fucking ruining everything. The various trade guilds realise this is ultimately going to do nothing but bankrupt them and leave all their customers dead.
> Guilds unite behind the political scenes and simultaneously lean on all the weakened countries to eventually broker a peace.
> Realising that humans are fucking stupid ass animals, if they don't give them something to channel their aggression and nationalistic pride into the peace will be shortlived and the wars will resume.
> Guilds nationalise mob football, a popular peasant game in every country, as Guild Ball. Guild Ball essentially becomes Europe's The Premier League + Roman Gladiator fighting.
> Guild ball is keeping the peace but also making the guilds a fuckload of money.a

Lots of nice paintjobs out there, but never for Masons. Everyone seems to paint them like burn victims. Why?
