Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, defeated a group of shape shifters, discovered one had taken the place of one of his allies, assured the bonds of friendship with Gabby remained strong and asked a question. Now, he struggles to explain himself.

“Dolah! Dolah! Do you think I'm – HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.” Eve has finally gotten back up to a standing position. Dolah sighs as Eve's cascade of laughter finally comes to a most likely temporary lull. Before you let yourself get any redder you leap to inform them why you just asked that question.

“Listen. I can explain why I asked that.”

Dolah nods. “I can too. Alan, go to bed. You've been up for twenty four hours and you look exhausted. That's not healthy. You need some sleep.”

You think to yourself. You've actually been up for twenty six hours doing multiple strenuous activities. You do feel very tired. But you can't let them get the wrong idea about what you said. “No, but I can tell you a very good reason for why –”

“Then tell us after you've gotten some sleep, Alan. You'll be much more eloquent. We'll listen.”

You nod your head and relent. She's right. You'll be up at around noon anyhow. You say your goodbyes to Eve and Dolah before heading towards the Circle. You climb up to the fourth floor and give Ed a quick hello while he reads. You collapse in bed.

You open your eyes to see the sun is now high in the sky, directly overhead. Ed's still reading the book he was reading when you went to sleep. As you remember everything you did yesterday, the second wave of embarrassment hits you and you put your hands over your eyes for a moment as you groan into your pillow.

Ed looks towards you for a moment, before going back to his book.

Planescape General and Q&A

Discuss Planescape and the Great Wheel here, whether the original AD&D 2e version, the 3.X version, the 4e version (yes, it exists in 4e, down to the baernaloths, the yugoloths, the Heart of Darkness, Maeldur et Kavurik, Tenebrous, Pelion, and the Last Word all being canon as of Dragon #417), the 5e version, or your own original blend.

I am exceedingly well-lanned on Planescape canon under a holistic blend of 2e, 3.X, and sometimes even 4e lore. If you have any questions at all about the setting's lore, feel free to ask, and I will give you direct quotes and citations from as many primary sources as I can, unlike afroakuma. I will note when something is open to GM interpretation, and explicitly note whenever I give merely my own personal interpretation.

I think I recall 2e having a time travel magic expansion book, which allowed travel to the future of oerth.

Did futuristic stuff like that ever cross over into planescape back then or since?
>>
>>44344983

You are referring to AD&D 2e Chronomancer, which is quasi-officially acknowledged in page 50 of the 2e Guide to the Ethereal Plane, under the Demiplane of Time section, which also acknowledges all of the contradictions surrounding Temporal Time.

D&D has always had its share of futuristic tech bleeding over into its various fantasy worlds, most notably the very old "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" and its spiritual successor adventures "City of the Gods" and "Tale of the Comet."

However, TSR tried to keep this futuristic bleedover mostly divorced from both Spelljammer and Planescape, possibly to maintain a more consistent "pure fantasy" feel to those meta-settings. That is why Spelljammer is full of bizarre magical devices but no true sci-fi tech, and why Planescape likewise uses magical devices even when a piece of sci-fi tech would be more appropriate (e.g. the magical "ICBM" and the magical "fighter jet" in page 31 and 34 of the "Doors to the Unknown" Planescape adventure).

That said, "Doors to the Unknown" breaks away from this divorce somewhat by presenting a Prime Material world of legitimate sci-fi technology rather than magic, and indeed, most magic does not function there. It is called Logicus Prime, and you can read about it in pages 49-53 of "Doors to the Unknown."

In short, yes, there is a very small degree of legitimately sci-fi, futuristic tech acknowledged in Planescape, although said technology has always been around in D&D (and simply never acknowledged in Planescape).

Given that there's no 5e material yet, besides those minimal footnotes in the player's handbook, what are some potential changes that could be made to accomodate it? I'm mostly working on templates for now but since I'm rather new to 5e's changes, I'm wondering if there mght be anything major I might be missing. Perhaps related to tieflings?
Also because of balancing, but I feel this is mostly getting used to it.
I'm not GM'ing, but we're all working together and seeing things we agree on because doing this all from scratch would be tiring for him.

>Researchers Mary Ellin Logue (University of Maine) and Hattie Harvey (University of Denver ) agree, and they have documented the benefits of boys' "bad guy" superhero action narratives. Teachers tend not to like such play, say Logue and Harvey, but it improves boys' conversation, creative writing skills, and moral imagination. Swedish boys, like American boys, are languishing far behind girls in school. In a 2009 study Logue and Harvey ask an important question the Swedes should consider: "If boys, due to their choices of dramatic play themes, are discouraged from dramatic play, how will this affect their early language and literacy development and their engagement in school?"

http://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2012/12/you-can-give-a-boy-a-doll-but-you-cant-make-him-play-with-it/265977/

This got me thinking. What if suppressing the rough-and-tumble school-yard role-playing of boys cripples their ability to thoughtfully play role playing games as young adults? Are well-meaning adults castrating their imaginations?

[Village turn]
Our village of Vanaheimr has been raided by vicious horned men with the face of goats. The villagers fear for their life, hoping the away team will return soon.
These demons will surely attack us again. For now the villagers stay inside, the strong are armed with spears and rock while the children and elderly hide. As soon as these goatmen decide to attack us again, we'll be ready to poke whatever sticks their nose in.
It's been a calm day, and the villagers are discussing what they should do next:
>Send someone to scout the mountains
>Resume daily activities
>Produce better weapons
>Other

(include image if needed)
>Inhabitants: Humans (hurt, few, primitive)
>Buildings: Houses (few, primitive), Storage shed (filled with lots of wood, stone and fish), wooden fence
>Tech: hunting and gathering, fishing boats (primitive)

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division, an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

You are currently investigating the disappearances of three Shinigami within the Human World's New York City. The complete absence of bodies very firmly implies that a Hollow is responsible, but apparently this particular specimen is capable of hiding its spiritual presence entirely, a quality that is thankfully almost never encountered among the soul-eating creatures. The fact that the Hollow has never appeared on any relevant monitoring equipment, and the fact that only one out of the three Shinigami was able to put up a fight at all against the monster seem to confirm that ability, though why one of the ambushes failed at all isn't entirely clear as of yet.

While looking through the local news, you've stumbled upon a series of murders that targeted a specific family - the Kelseys, with the crimes quickly resulting in the death of all direct relatives. Considering that a couple of deaths in that same family have occurred before the main streak of homicides, it's reasonable to assume that a Hollow is responsible for those crimes, as it aligns with their natural instincts to attack their family and loved ones first and foremost. Considering that the Shinigami responsible for the area in which the attacks had happened was not able to spot the presence of any foreign spiritual beings, it is highly probable that this is the same presence-concealing Hollow that then went on to have the three agents of the Seireitei as its prey.

The Shinigami who oversaw - and still does, technically - the area in which the Kelsey family resided is currently standing in front of you, thinking about your request for help.

"Yeah, I'll help." He declares after a short pause. "If that thing decides to suddenly change locations, and its new location just happens to be mine... Well, let's just say that I'd rather not participate in that lottery." The man hops off from the invisible platform up in the air that he himself has built using a speck of spiritual power, leveling with you on the rooftop of an apartment building. He offers you a handshake, which you take him up on.

"I'm Soren, Tenth Division." He introduces himself without any sort of friendly or polite flare to his tone; all matter-of-factly, business-like. "Make sure you'll get a good word in for me if my little Captain asks why I abandoned my post, alright?"

Despite his serious tone, he seems to joke, or so you think, as he doesn't wait for your answer. "Let's check the Kelsey places first. I'll lead you there. Most of them have been ransacked already, with one exception. I think the very first one, before the murders... what was her name?" He seems to struggle to remember, so you mention Hannah Kelsey, the person who died from a disease about a month before the murders have began, and Soren nods, continuing.

"Her place is still in order, untouched ever since, as far as I can tell. We should go there and check it out, see what we can find." He suggests. You wonder if it would be more efficient for the two of you to split up and look for clues that way, but he shakes his head.

"I don't know what to look for, so you'll need to drag me around with you if you want me to be of any use. I guess I'll be the... the Watson to your Sherlock, Ryouta. You do know of those two, right? Well, let's get going. Give me the rundown of what you've found so far."

You tell him about the clues that you've discovered as the two of you hop over air on your way there. Soren listens quietly, without any comment, only nodding infrequently to demonstrate his still present attention. You reach the house in about ten minutes.

(2/4)
>>
"Here we are. Kelsey Hannah's flat." He presents the humble home with a gesture, offering you to take the lead this time. Hannah's place is nothing special when it comes to size or luxury, and there isn't much of note here. The owner has been dead for more than a month, but the house is still in good condition, with hardly any dust littering the desks and shelves. Someone must be taking care of it. You find pictures taken with a camera decorating some of the walls and furniture, and while nothing stands out about them, you realize a detail.

"She doesn't have any pictures of her family." All of the photographs depict a young woman with red hair - most likely Hannah herself - and a tall, imposing, but in a bizarre contrast to his intimidating appearance, immensely happy dark-haired man, like a gentle giant. Judging by the rings on their fingers, they appear to be married or at the very least engaged.

Soren, after a few seconds spent in thought, nods. "Perhaps she disliked them. Whatever her reasons were, I think it's fair to assume that Hannah is our Hollow, and that she targeted them out of her grudge."

The timespan of a month is not enough for a soul to naturally degrade into a Hollow, but the only other death to have happened before the crimes occurred mere days before them. Perhaps something happened to Hannah's Soul Chain that led to a much swifter transformation. Perhaps the 'suicide' was only made to appear that way at a glance.

"You never found the souls of the Kelseys, Soren?"

"I did not. I guess it's true that the suicide wasn't real. Or the Hollow somehow found the soul before I have. If I got a look at the body, we'd know for sure, but... it doesn't really matter anymore, does it?"

He's probably right.

"You've mentioned wanting to take a look at the camera footage at the Atlantic Terminal, didn't you? Well, let's go. I have a way to get past the guards." Soren says, leaving the flat by phasing out through the window. You follow after him.

(3/4)
>>
>>44342788
The guard is still sitting at his post. Soren approaches him, and, with a quick movement of the arm...

...Strikes the man on the back of the neck, knocking him out cold.

...

>Protest. The Shinigami aren't allowed to do this sort of thing to humans. He should have at least asked you first.
>Just quietly go along with what he's doing. Or, to put it more accurately, with what he's already done.

Needless to say after seeing Force Awakens my Star Wars hype levels are higher than my midi-chlorians

The new Star Wars RPG books look fun, but at ~$40 a book I can't afford to get all three at once. I have the pdfs to skim through but I refuse to run a game off of my laptop

Some questions:

> What are the major differences between Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny?
> What types of campaigns are suited to each?
> Are the core rules for the system included in each book?
> Are different enemies/NPCs included in each book?
> In your opinion, which is the most fun?
> Not really concerned about the dice. After a year of constant DnD 5e I could go for a more abstract resolution system.

My brother wants to run a game set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, I want to run something set right before Force Awakens. Which book would cater to either/both of these settings?

I feel like Edge of the Empire would be better for characters focused on surviving and getting to the next job a la Firefly, but I also feel like Star Wars is a power fantasy and grittiness and realism wouldn't necessarily be that fun in this universe.

Then again, it would be cool to explore the darker parts of Coruscant or get in a bar fight on Tatooine.
>>
>>44342646
They're pretty fun. There is overlap between the books but each one also has unique enemies, equipment and character trees. They all work together easily, its really up to you to decide what you want to use in your game.

I use everything in my games because its a game about hair metal Jedi fighting the empire with the power of rock but you may want to restrict it for yourself.
>>
>>44342727

Jeebus that sounds metal.

How does Age of Rebellion fit into the scheme of things? Is it full of more martial rules and equipment compared to the other books?

I know this is more of a /pol/ question, but I fear treading their waters to find out their answers.

This has been bothering me for quite a while now, is it actually racist to hate these assholes, or is it just a rational response to their general MO?
Also, fuck Drizzt, he's a damn Mary Sue.

What is your view on this topic /tg/?

Elves are fictional, so hating them can be racist or entirely justified or even some combination of both.

In a fantasy realm I don't think racism is a pushing social issue. Draw certainly deserve disdain. For real life opinions, hating fiction has no consequences so I don't think it counts as anything to hate dark elves.

So, we have gathered once again to go over the dealings in the galaxy. This is what is on todays agenda:

>The third moon of Bortox has vanished. The local populus blames the space elves

>A newly formed colony on the ice world of Saami has an infestation of cats. If these are cats or catgirls is still unknown.

>The slug people of Avforing is demanding a 40% of Earths trash. No reason why has been stated.

>>
I think I know why they want our trash, seeing as nano-recycling means that only things people are too embarassed to put in the recycling bins goes to landfill. I move to undo the decision to make these bins transparent so people can finally dispose of their condoms ethically.
>>
>>44340621
Of the slug people want to venture through that wormhole we've been dumping our trash in they're welcome to it.
>>
>>44340653
This.

What the fuck they want with depleted radioactive sludge is anyone's guess at this point.

If cat girls then they need to either moved to a nearby colony willing to accept them rather than some fledgling outpost that is just getting up an running. Then find out who dumped them there and have "words" with them. If cats then fire up the BBQ until their numbers are brought to a sustainable level.

As for the Space Elves. Let them have that sad little rock. It was fucking obvious the terraforming was barely sticking.

>from the Pokemon jump
On taking an identity: "Though you are still you, with your old set of memories and your own moral justifications, the new memories will affect your thought process, your reactions, and your instincts."

On completing the jump: "All personality changes from identities can be revoked if you wish. Memories from the identities become inactive: available to access for information, but no longer affect your personality."

So yes, you could choose to revoke the changes. But consider: will the new you - the one whose personality has had ten years to be affected by all those memories - want that?
>>
>>44340205
To note as well that Pokemon is one of the only jumps that offers that blank slate option. The two jumps where memory overload can be a major issue, Transformers and Darksiders, both don't.

I've GMed some Fate Accelerated, played some as well. Our campaign was about urban fantasy demon hunters, with tongue-in-cheek presentation.

>Pros
The system is insanely adaptable, and it handles improvisation well. If you have players who can think on the fly you'll have a good time.

>Cons
The mechanics are all the same under the hood, so it doesn't feel like you accomplish anything by narrating differently.
The game falls flat if players are bad at thinking up aspects and controlling the narrative.
You need a shitton of sticky notes for everything.
>>
>>44340065

Haven't played it. Didn't find the concepts appealing. I don't like it for the same reasons I don't like GURPS, except flip "simulation" to "narrative" in most cases. Too many rules that aren't intuitive and require too specific of a mindset. You don't "get" the system until you understand the entire thing: lots and lots of very specific terms and rules that don't mesh nicely at first. Tons of backtracking to previous chapters to understand how they link up. And until everyone gets it, everyone is on board, and the group is working together, it's just a big ball of suck.

>The denizens of the Eye have learned over the millennia that those who swear an oath of fealty to the Despoiler would do well not to break it. When the World Eaters that had promised their aid to Abaddon left his armies to join the fighting upon Skalathrax, the Warmaster abandoned his plans, tracked the Berzerkers down and severed their limbs before cauterising their wounds with a flamer, leaving them as little more than screaming stumps unworthy of a place at the Blood God’s table. When the Emperor’s Children that had joined the Black Legion turned upon their masters at Faeruthia he blinded and deafened them to a man, tearing out their tongues and sealing them in inert gel-skin so their sensory deprivation was complete. Upon the crystal planet of Liolonac the Sorcerers of the Thousand Sons denied Abaddon the audience they had promised him, having found a relic of unsurpassed value. The Warmaster visited a mutagenic plague upon them that twisted them into bulging repulsive mounds of flesh before lobotomising them and hunting them until death with a pack of warped hounds.

>Abaddon’s vengeance is not limited to his brother Traitors. When a wilderness shrine upon Plutol refused to bow to his authority, Abaddon killed every other human upon the planet before personally visiting the shrine and forcing the priests to eat the bodies of those they had once prayed for. Such is the magnitude and thoroughness of each act of revenge that even Daemons fear to cross Abaddon. In his singleminded quest to bring the galaxy to heel he earned a new name; the Despoiler, he who would stop at nothing to secure revenge.

He does have sharp surfaces.

Namely, I want to find a way to replace DnD's magic system by using mana or spell points instead, but I run into a few problems. If you give too many points a level it makes levels insignificant, but if you give only 1 then it makes using higher level spells extremely expensive, and makes it harder to spam low level spells.

Could an alternate way to deal with this be including things like magical fetishes that refund spells cast or can store a certain amount of magic points?

The math currently is something like;
>Start at 2-4 mana
>In combat attacks cost 1 mana each
>Ritual spells cost 3 mana for a level 1 spell
>Get +1 mana a level

If this is the case then magic users have a lot of weakness. The only alternate solution is to either increase the amount of mana they get per level, or maybe make all spells cost the same and just weaken or strengthen their effects based on how much mana they use.

Are you wanting to limit spells per-combat or limit spells per-time? As in, do they regenerate mana as time goes on?

You could have the spell costs static and scaling per spell level listed in your sourcebook or something like that. And then either every turn, or when they take an action to channel/pray/whatever, they build up a number of mana scaling to their stat and/or level.

I feel dirty for basically ripping off my own system that I've posted before, and am going to post a big update for in like five minutes.

It's less about the limiting and more about making them useful and more balanced at all times. Yes, they do regenerate mana over time and if they stand still and 'charge' they can get a single mana point to spend on something, such as a blast or magical spell that they lack just 1 point for.

Thinking of building Affinity to have another deck to play at FNM
Does anyone who has the deck have any general tips? Is it an enjoyable deck for you to play?

Because goats don't like the sea.

My setting already has goat people, and nothing about them hinges on them being goats.
