Svan're Ikthu is a Kel Dor, native to Dorin. At a young teen age, he had snuck out of his home one fateful night, for no particular reason other than to go for a walk. Thoughts of a certain female Kel Dor dominated his mind, and he needed to come up with an approach to woo her. However, a band of pirates held different intentions for the young Kel Dor. There was no good reason to kidnap this young alien, other than he was in decent physical shape and the pirates needed to expand crew. They stole him in the dead of night, using a device that released Oxygen in small doses to render Svan're unconscious, but not physically harm him.
>>
>>44591434
Disoriented and afraid, Svan're comes to in a cell, where he was encouraged to follow orders, or suffer death. For about three years, he served the pirates under fear of execution, until a moment of pure chance. The band of pirates had ordered him to join a small band for a raid of a low-income, low-defense village in the Outer Rim, where he came into contact with a human in gray robes, enjoying a drink at a local bar. During the raid, this man neither attempted to stop the pirates nor did he attempt to join them in the looting. It was only when Svan're approached him and shakily demanded he empty his robes, did the man speak. He turned to the young one and simply said, "I sense greatness in you. Follow your own path, not those of others."
With that, the man rises, and slaughters each of the pirates with an Orange sword of light, very curious to Svan're. Even more curious, he left the young boy alive and even retrieved the keys to the starship and handed them to Svan're. Ever since, the young Kel Dor roamed the galaxies independently, smuggling, doing merc work, whatever kept his starship up to speed and kept food in his stomach. Every now and then, he would notice a mental voice speaking in the back of his head, not quite with words, but with ideas, concepts, guidance. Whenever he listened to his gut feeling when these thoughts arose, he noticed everything turned out in his favor and he held some unseen power. In time, he realized meditating enhanced this inner wisdom, and he became one with himself after about five years of meditation on the primitive planet Yalara, where he knew no pirates or otherwise would have need to come disturb him or the environment.

So /tg/, I'm getting to work on revising a sci-fi setting of mine, and given that the setting focuses primarily on the criminal element on the fringes of "civilized space," drugs are going to happen.

Problem is that when it comes to shit like this, I'm not that creative, and I'd rather not just completely rip off Shadowrun or something.

So, sci-fi drug thread? Sci-fi drug thread.

Preferably non-combat and non-medical drugs, but I'll take literally anything.

Low orbit : Two types of druges, one stimulant and one depressant held inside a slow release capsule. The stimulant hits first, then the depressant and then the stimulant again. It's called low orbit because it's kind of like the rush of takeoff, then zero gravity and then freefalling.

I've heard about this new policy the King is doing. It's called a "Royal Army". Basically what he plans on doing is hiring a bunch of young peasants and laborers, give them some halberds, helmets and hauberk, have some mercenaries drill them and keep them under arms constantly. They say it's to secure our lands against bandits and enemy attacks. But I don't buy it for a minute. He's planning on doing away with our gods given feudal rights and making us slaves to the royal government! Something needs to be done to stop it soon.

You're just mad because you and your sons couldn't get in on that shit because you got so drunk at court last winter that you literally shit yourself in front of the King.
They've already put three members of my family in leadership and training positions of the King's Own.

I don't know if I should make this as Create your own adventures or as a Quest thing. But then thing is I don't have much world building for it either ways.

Working on Fallout: Wastelands v2.0 and I figured I'd drum up some interest by posting the information the men and women of /tg/ helped me come up with for a Fallout tabletop game.

It is February 17th, 2228, two hundred and five years since the Great War that reset the clocks and sent parts of the world back to the Stone Age. Men, women, and children hid below ground from the atomic fire, praying that they would be spared. Buildings were destroyed, cities leveled, and some of the greatest feats of human engineering were wiped off the face of the planet for good.

In Louisiana the Mississippi River –now known only as the Black Water- flows free once more, no longer fettered by levies and dams. Baton Rouge is a glowing pile of rubble, no longer a proper city. Lafayette has been looted, torched, and leveled, with only a single town remaining within its borders. But not all hope is lost. Not all of Louisiana has suffered their fates.

(Shit, when Anonymous for the OP)

New Orleans is waking up. She’s starting to feel like herself again. The combined forces of the Aristocracy, the All-Saints, and the Silver Dollar Sams have managed to get the city back up and running. Every day boats pack the canals and sound of workers can be heard across the city, and each night the lights shine on the water and music floats through the air.

But there are those who would take New Orleans for themselves. The Brotherhood of Steel grows ever closer, having taken control of an Old World Vault to use as their headquarters. However, where some fear an iron-fisted rule, many in New Orleans see only opportunity.

In the swamps to the east tribals grow restless, and people have begun disappearing in the night. But these are just stories told to keep children from wandering off into the swamps, which have their own, very real dangers. Mirelurks, yao guai, and deathclaws alike call the swampy lands around New Orleans home.

Those are the problems of tomorrow, not today! Louisiana is alive again! Towns and even a city have sprung up in the swamps. Sure there are some problems with raiders and tribals, but the bright lights, sounds, and drink of New Orleans drown out all but the deepest of sorrows! Soon the Great Festival, the ancient tradition of Mardi Gras, will begin and all of New Orleans will be swept up in the celebration! Forget all your worries for a time, friends! Sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself, for tomorrow you may die. Because after all…

War. War never changes…

Overall description of Louisiana coming in next.

The Louisiana Wasteland consists of the lands south of Interstates 10 and 12, going from the glowing ruins of Baton Rouge down to the marshes and deltas that make up the southern Louisiana coast. The Great Black Water (Mississippi River), a massive river, runs through the Louisiana Wasteland. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of the wasteland, the Black Water is polluted and carries radioactive material, making it unfit for consumption or use. Large, mutated crawfish live in the Black Water- dangerous creatures known as mirelurks.

Swamps cover much of the Louisiana Wasteland and are home to all manner of creatures ranging from simple bloatflies and wild dogs all the way to swampclaws (deathclaws with more alligator-like traits) and yao-guai. Combined with fierce tribals and merciless raiders, these creatures make traveling through the Louisiana Wasteland dangerous as best and downright suicidal at worst.

But not all hope is lost. The pre-War city of New Orleans still stands as a beacon of hope for the people of the wasteland. While the breaking of the levies and the flooding of the Black Water have submerged much of the city, New Orleans still survives as a post-War American Venice. Canals filled with boats and canoes run through the city, allowing people to travel quickly and (relatively) safely from one end of the city to the other.

The entire city is run by a mysterious and distant group known as the “Aristocracy.” Little is known about them aside from the fact that they are all ghouls that were wealthy, prominent figures before the Great War.

The Bombs aren’t what destroyed New Orleans. At least, not directly. Sure some buildings crumbled when atomic warheads detonated near the city limits, but none of them hit New Orleans directly. No, what really hit the Big Easy was the breaking of the levies. Waters from the Gulf and Black Water flooded New Orleans, sweeping away the streets and destroying many of the buildings and drowning several thousand people that managed to survive the worst of the Great War.

One section of the city managed to remain relatively untouched: the French Quarter. Thanks to its improved levies, the French Quarter withstood the worst of the flooding, although the radioactive materials in the water did result in the transformation of the Quarter’s inhabitants into ghouls. Not a group to let the sudden bestowal of immortality go to waste, the survivors in the French Quarter worked quickly to consolidate their power and rose up as the leadership caste of New Orleans: The Aristocracy.

The city of New Orleans is made up of the following districts that managed to survive the Great War:

You sit at the kitchen table, groggily eating cereal that is very much soggy and cold.

You got maybe an hour of sleep last night, and that's about it. After waking up, you tried for another hour to get back to sleep. Failing that, you tried to tire yourself out. And now you're here.

"Why the fuck do I still buy this stuff?" You ask, as you examine the sort of wheat paste that sits on your spoon. Normally you'd be eating cheerios, but the things that remind you of lost friends can sometimes sneak up on you...

You actually had no idea that you had a second box of cereal up there...

Maybe you shouldn't be eating this...

You toss your spoon back into your bowl and plant your head on the table, only just managing to not dunk your face into the wheat paste/milk mix. Heaving a sigh, you dread the coming day. Mostly because you can see nothing to do; or at least nothing worth doing.

Oh, hang on. You feel something. It's pretty strong. In fact, you don't know why you only just now noticed it.

It's your cat.

Just as you recognize the feeling, there is a knock at your door. You go and open it, and are greeted by two pairs of blue eyes.

"Goooooood morning!" Abigail shouts as she bursts into your apartment.
"Meew" Moriarty says, like he's somehow echoing Abigail
"Back so early?" You ask.

Abigail's chipper expression is replaced by a dull stare. "Do you have any idea what time it is?" She asks.
You check your watch, briefly confused as to why she would ask that. The clock face answers that question. It's currently noon.

>Later than I thought, obviously

>Do you?

>Ask how it went with her parents

>Smooch now, talk later

What system would you use to run a game in this? Is there anyway to adapt DnD to have modern military equipment or do you just bite the bullet and use GURPS?

It's hard to describe. You have to become a conduit to your world while balancing the fun of your players. All your players. Rules mastery is really useful. Being able to read people is more useful. Know the rule books, as in their layout. Don't be afraid to say "I'm not sure, but for now what we're going to do is..." And play that way for the rest of the session. Reward players for creative thinking. Make the world real, so the "randumb" shit they pull has a bite. Don't be afraid to be silly.

Also, for your first adventure, describe them approaching the entrance to the dungeon instead of having them meet in a tavern. You can always ask the players how they met after they get a good look at the entrance to the dungeon.

Watch the Second community episode about dungeons and dragons. It actually has a pretty good portrayal of dungeon mastering.
>>
>>44589748
Don't squirrel away your best ideas, use them while you're still excited about them. Get inspired, do prep, don't be a "fly on your seat" dm, improvisation is key, but it isn't enough to run a really great game.

Be willing to make mistakes. If you are drawing blanks, take a 5 minute bathroom break and brainstorm.
>>
>>44590193
This is great advice, but you can also go too far with this.

If your players make it too convoluted to use some of your ideas, you gotta kill your babies. It sucks, but you gotta do it.

Savage Worlds uses cards for initiative order. Super fun and fast.

Each round new cards are dealt.

Face cards first, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, then number cards. In case of matching values, use reverse alphabetical order Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs.

Jokers are left in the deck and go first and also provide a bonus to every action for the round.
>>
>>44589950
There are edges (feats) that manipulate this system as well. "Quick" allows the character to redraw 5's or lower. "Level Headed" allows the character to draw two cards and use the best one.

>First post is about Savage Worlds.

Mein negger.

The only drawback to this system is that it's a mite bit more difficult to use when the group is not face-to-face. Skype is alright, but in a medium like play-by-post or something it basically amounts to "let the DM draw and pray they're telling you the truth."

While they were never heavily used by Tolkien, Howard or Moorcock (and thus never made it into what most neckbeards today would consider "proper fantasy"), intelligent/talking animals and/or animals exhibiting the ability to turn into humans (especially traditional "trickster" types such as cats, foxes, rats and certain birds) have been a staple of fairytales and regional folklore for countless generations (including some more recent literature, like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the Chronicles or Narnia - or even, arguably, parts of the Hobbit). How comes so few fantasy roleplaying games so much as acknowledge their existence? I know you're all going to shout "furry" here because that's the relevant buzzward, but could that really be it? I mean, I've never met one. I haven't even met a person who has, and I hang out almost exclusively with the type of people you'd think would. I keep hearing about them on the internet, but all that gives me is the impression that the problem is blown catastrophically out of proportion.

So if it's not furries, what is it? Fear of a game appearing "childish" (because talking owls are obviously for kids, unlike elves and gnomes)? The difficulty of involving such a character with the typical adventuring party (what about those animals that can take human form? It's a neat gimmick, and playing an animal who happens to have a human body at the moment seems to me like a far more interesting roleplaying opportunity than "short, hairy midget human")? What about as NPCs?

I mean, I've just finished watching The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe with my brother and you got to admit, this is pretty strange when you think about it.

That is a good question, since sapient animals is a mythical staple for centuries.

To be fair to old JRR, he did do this, especially in The Hobbit.

We had a talking octopus as an Oracle once. He was called Paul for obvious reasons.

I think a reason is the whole food thing.

Also it's usually, especially in cartoons, done to be cutesy and adorable and its usually annoying as balls.

Most modern thing I can think of in terms of books would be either Belgaraid or Wind on Fire.
