Well, in my experience, when you find a weapon, you can usually its enchanted by the glow around it. Meaning you'd take it to a mage to see what it does. Right?

D&D doesn't always do that. Often, a magic weapon might be impossible to differentiate from any other high-quality weapon unless you have detect magic up. Even then, the womb dagger's a cursed item. Unless you're of the same caster level as the person that made it, or can pass a decently high caster level check, Identify reports whatever the person that made it told it to report.
