Why the fuck do bards exist?
They should just be a rogue subclass.
One of the largest problems with most DnD editions besides Basic and 4e (the good editions) is that 'angry fighter', 'sneaky fighter' and 'regular fighter' are different classes, but 'storm mage', 'illusionist', 'necromancer' and 'enchanter' are all the same class.
Blame people who value tradition over good game design.
>>44560426
That's super complicated. In 1e AD&D they were in the appendices like psionics and the planes. They were meant to fill a specific conceptual role modeled loosely after the folkloric and quasihistorical figures from which they draw their name. Sort of like monks and (particularly) druids but way more complicated and involving dual classing. They were what one might think of as an advanced prestige class and as such they had diverse and quirky abilities beyond the scope of what would be expected from a thief or assassin.
In 2e they actually were as you say: a rogue subclass like the thief. Not a thief kit as you probably imagine (although there were performer kits for thieves), but conceptually and, to some extent, mechanically built off the same framework. A bit like a paladin and a fighter or an enchanter and an invoker but somewhat more divergent.
3e abandoned the superclass approach and since the abilities of bards had traditionally been distinct from thieves and because of the inherited spellcaster/nonspellcaster division (going back to the prototypical ancestry of the game) it made sense to make them a separate class.
It made even more sense to keep them separate in 4e, as the primary role of a bard is clearly that of a leader rather a striker.
In 5e it would make sense to have it be a background (and in fact there is an entertainer background that anyone can take, rogues included) but there is now a tradition of bards as a performance based support class.

You know there's things outside of combat, right?Oh wait you love 4e of course you don't

Remember, ask a specific question, we'll be happy to help. But if you're vague, we'll tell you to make your players fight necrons. Probably.
What are some of the most baffling lines of logic your party has ever used and worked?
>>44534882
My DH2e party are excellent warriors and get the job done. We've taken on Chaos Space Marines and sent them packing, well as other creatures of the dark.
...The only problem is that we're terrible investigators, in a game about investigation. We just kind of stumbled upon the rogue interrogator we went on a massive time traveling escapade to find. We had no idea we'd even walk into him, it just kind of happened and we ended up cutting his legs off with a once corrupted Astartes power sword.
Later on, during the climax of several years worth of gaming across multiple campaigns in each system, we walked in on a bunch of heretics in a hyperbolic time chamber. We did them in, burnt them to a crisp. Before any of us investigate, the Arbite turns the machine off and we return to our regularly scheduled pace of time, wherein we have to rush out and save our Inquisitor's and Grey Knight Paladin's asses from a Keeper of Secrets.
The Inquisitor comes in and forces us to give the chamber a once over, without any real secrets being able to be uncovered by us. We are forced to burn the bodies and everything on them without learning just who the fuck these people are and if they have anything on them that would indicate further heresy or allies.
I think I'm the only sane man here, as everyone seems to be all up on the Inquisitor's dick and doesn't question his lack of investigation. Its frustrating as fuck both in and out of character.
Later on, in a follow up session we find out that the "heretics" in the time chamber were us from an alternate timeline, which is a great twist and my GM did an excellent job in presenting, but the group was too fucking retarded to stick around and smell the roses for 5 fucking minutes.
My GM and I talked about it a bit, and had a one-on-one thing where I tried to convince the Inquisitor to let me use some newfound divination skills to scour an object he took from the room, but was rebuffed.

CONT.
Honestly, I wish that I never knew about it OOC, because it only makes me even more frustrated with our utter lack of any kind of cerebral usage. If anything, it only highlights how the group is utterly incompetent and somehow just walks right into our goals skipping and singing. The only reason we do anything is because we're led around like the retarded murderhobos we are.
I hope this kind of goes along with the whole "baffling lines of logic" prompt, because it seems to me that my entire group functions on it.
Out of curiosity, has anyone come up with rules for creating a regiment that's nothing but Storm Troopers? Or are there any suggestions for creating them with what's on hand? It's giving me a bit of trouble given my limited experience.
Become The Vampire 27
You slowly get to your feet and put away the bottle, sighing softly.
“I'm alright. Not great, but alright. I'll manage.”
You head for the bathroom, grabbing your uniform on the way, and try to psyche yourself up. Another day of classes, then a meeting with Angie, and then... You're not sure what. Your main reason for coming to this school is now murky and unclear, but it's also the only way to bring your dad back at the moment. You might be able to save your mom as well if she's actually dead, or perhaps restore her humanity. You strip down and climb into the shower, trying to clear your head. You can hear the bathroom door open.
“If you're going to tell me you're fine with that sort of tone, you know that I'm not going to believe you, but I won't pry if you don't want me to. That said, I do want to be able to help you. Unfortunately I have very limited options if you don't want to talk about it. I'll be out here waiting for you, to talk or anything else that you need, alright?”
The door closes once more, and you take a slow breath. You need to evaluate your relationships and figure out what you want to do. You've confided so much in Jennifer and she wants to be there for you, is it fair to hold things back from her now? But what if she's still playing the long game for some sort of plan? It's time you started making some decisions about this stuff, especially with Sammy making demands about your claims, even if it's just lines in the sand.

Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.
Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son, shortly after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Genin graduate named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. The final portion of the Chunin Exams is underway!

She opens up the chest and arms of her puppet, and two barrels extend from the shoulders. So, she was simply using the drone in the air to cover herself temporarily as she preformed this jutsu. You recognize this technique from the forest. Streams of fire are expelled from the shoulders as she completes her technique. "Great Breakthrough!"
The fire wraps around the explosion of wind, turning into a twisting pillar of hellfire that pierces the center of the arena in a line. It's incredibly fast, and you have to leap to the left despite the distance you've made. It explodes against the wall of the arena, spraying fire everywhere and igniting the tree that had been there. The crowd cheers despite the rising smoke.
Senbon pierce the ground in front of your face, and you place your palm down to try and stand up when one pins it against the ground. You quickly yank it up, but Kagami shouts before you wonder if you're safe.
"There you are! My sensors can highlight the color of your blood against the background! You're MINE!!"
The heels of her armor explode into blue fire as the drone drops, out of power and ammo. She's going to engage you up close, having spotted you.
What do you do?
>A. Throw down a smoke bomb, and use the Water Bullet Jutsu directly forward. If she can't see the blood, she can't see you.
>B. Use the Hydro Sword Jutsu, and meet her in combat.
>C. Leap backwards, and attempt to aim a senbon into her visor. If you miss, you could be seriously harmed, but you could hit her other weak point.

Recap:
You are Vincent Esperanza, an American Exterminator in Hong Kong. A lifetime ago you were a high-flying con man who earned the trust of the naive ultra-rich and constructed a respectable Ponzi scheme. These days Global Exterminators Corporation holds your life under contract.
This past week has been rough. Your adopted son was grievously wounded, you slept with a serial killer and “killed” her husband (his old heart and a few other body parts are mouldering in a cheap cooler in the back of your van), and today you and your boss were almost eaten by a madman’s centipede army.
Still, you triumphed. You recovered your nerve over a suspicious meal and now you’ve been called upon to race against an unknown opponent on the Fragrant Harbor’s highways.
The van drives itself back to GEC while you try to psyche yourself up for the upcoming race. Your prep work is disturbed by a half-welcome smell and you turn towards Devlinson.
“Are you smoking in here?”
“Uh,” says Devlinson. A recently lit cigarette dangles from his lip.
“Put it out.”
“Hey, I’m your boss. Technically this is *my* van.”
“Fuck that, put it out.”
The cigarette sprays orange pinpricks as Devlinson flicks it out the window. The two of you pull into GEC HQ in silence and you park next to the Elevon which is right where you left it from this morning.
Devlinson sees the Elevon; it doesn’t impress.
“You’re going to race this heap in the GP? Your psych evaluations never suggested you were this bad..”
>Just wait.
>She may not look like much but she’s got it where it counts.
>How’s your stomach, Dev?

The door gives way with a mighty crack, completely collapsing onto the ground under the weight of the three of you. You all ripped the damn thing off its very hinges, but you don’t have too long to be impressed.
An object that is in motion must continue to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. You, Fitz and MacKay are all currently in motion towards the tile floors, which just so happens to be the outside force.
It’s a real abrupt stop that knocks the wind out of you as you hit the ground. And to make matters even worse, Fitz and MacKay land right on top of you.
Yeah, Newton is a real bitch.
“What the heck?! Who are you people?!”
You all turn up to look at the source of the voice.
The shelves are somewhat threadbare, save for some more supplies. There’s no small abundance of even more brown bottles of hydrogen peroxide and small first aid kits, but that’s not what has your attention.
Previously reclined on an open box of tissues, a three-inch tall woman with wings hovers in the air above you, with a look of surprise and suspicion etched on her tiny face. You notice that the purple leotard she’s wearing leaves little to the imagination, but the majority of your attention is currently directed to sparks of lightning that are steadily growing in her hands.

The air crackles around me, the wind making a sound like a broken soul whimpering and begging for torture to stop. I think my spell back there might have left reality in a daze, kind of like a sucker punch.
Still, I feel bad that Marla was caught in it, she only wanted to help me and....I'm not a real good sister am I? I mean I did ruin their lives...but she seems to enjoy her new one anyways.
<And why aren't you running or, you know attacking the monster that wants to eat you alive, idiot>

Describe some of your obscure settings to me /tg/, possibly with intent to turn them into rpg settings. I'll begin with one from my childhood, the world of the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud.
>set in 90's-early 00's Britain
>wizards are an oligarchy and make up pretty much all of the government
>wizards themselves only have basic powers and rely on much more powerful demon slaves to do their dirty work
>it has been this way for more or less all of human history, and many of the ancient civilizations were much more competent than Britain is now
>most magic is focused on learning to summon shit without getting yourself killed
>any magic that can counter demons (ex. a golem in the second book) just fucks their shit up and they only survive
>there's an in-built biological timer within non-magically trained people. When wizards in a society become too powerful, people start being born with magic resistance so that they can overthrow the wizards and start again.
I fucking loved those books and that setting.

Blows my mind this series isn't bigger than it is.
don't forget the part where technology is sort of vaguely 90's-20th yet in terms of actual history it's the 18th century, with the american civil war being waged with modern cars, djinn and magic
And it's not about wizards being too powerful, it's about wizards overtly exercising magic over enough generations to allow the common folk to develop resistance. Basicly "large lump of sorcerors close to one another" = magic radiation gives all kinds of people immunity or minor magic abilities
Tell me anon, what did you think about the ending originally when you read it?
