You gently clasp Pampi's chin and look at her in the eyes. "Once we fix this, then we can. I promise."

She rose a hand to daintily hold the one that you were clasping her with, and she kissed it.

"Okay." she said, to then rest her lips against you hand for a while. "...Okay."

---*---

You asked if Pampi could make a truth serum - and she couldn't. In a tribe where nobody lies, there was no need for something like that. Your helmet didn't have a recording function either - yet. You could make one, but certainly not in time for the trial, as you would soon discover.

You go to look for Tina. You asked the guards outside Pampi's house where she might be, and they gave directions to where she lived. They also informed you that the trial would happen soon - tonight. "So soon?" you asked them. "...Is it odd?" the guard wondered. "We hardly have trials here, of course it would happen so soon. There are no queues for this."

"Hardly?" you wondered. "That's pretty amazing."

"Yeah." the Titan replied. "But it happens. You know, like somebody loses their temper and takes decisions they shouldn't."

You went to Tina's house, and as you arrived, you could smell coffee. You could see her through the opening in her wall - a window. She was grinding something in a mortar, with a bag of coffee beans besides her.

"Hello, Tina." you greeted. "Making coffee, at this hour of the day?"

"Oh. Hello, Pure one." she chuckled, expressing an uncharacteristic amount of amusement for a Titan. "Spying on people, at this hour of the day?" she teased back.

"You know that the trail is later today, right?" you asked. "Mind if I come in for a cup of coffee? Hrm?"

Her grin widened, a she looked at you menacingly. "Sure, why not."

You went inside, to a large main room. The furniture was wooden and simple, but hung on the walls were several different kinds of high-tech looking weapons.

She had a potful of coffee on a table, and served herself and you a cup. She tugged the table near to herself after she gave you your drink.

"Wanted to chat before the balloon... Pops?" she joked, and took a generous chug of coffee.

You didn't have much time before the trial began.

"Yeah." you reply. She smiled back and drank even more.

So why did you leave Pampi out to dry? We both know you were lying, it was obvious, and you're going to lose much more than you gain once I prove it. If you really want to be a witch this will set you back totally, because Blue will know and her next apprentice won't be so easily bullied.

Slight retcon on the location of the Elevon.

Re-cap:

After a night of father and sonfu drinking, you woke up badly hungover. You managed to feed your termites and left Jeremy in the care of Mr. ‘Pedebody (or vice versa) in the Elevon at Lion’s Rock park. You then drove to court in your van, encountering minimal traffic and bullets. You may or may not have arrived on time but you were accosted by the defendant’s internet girlfriend who wanted you to have a conscience. You were confused by the concept.

Now you stand before your acquaintance, Inspector Lopez of ScythCorp and an attendant army of lawyers and psychologists who make up the prosecution.

You can still hear the defendant’s internet girlfriend fighting with security as you take your seat. The crackling to tasers is audible as Lopez greets you. As in his earlier call, he seems unfazed by your lateness. He also mentions nothing of the warning he gave you earlier. What exactly he knew or didn’t know is impossible to say; you struggle to read his eyes and he explains how the case will be conducted in a detached, business-like manner.

“We try and keep things simple here. The prosecution will begin by describing the circumstances of Mr. Ko’s arrest and the charges being leveled against him. Then we enter all our evidence against Mr. Ko formally into the record. Once that’s done, the defense gets its turn to speak and lay out their case. They call their witnesses, try and emphasize the good character of the defendant, maybe pick at our case preemptively a bit, and rest. We present our own witnesses and then cross examine theirs.”

“Cross examine?”

“We question them. Try and pull apart their testimonies. They get the same chance to question us at the end of the case.”

“So they’ll be questioning me.”

“For sure.”

“Okay… So my thing is the skull.”

Several of the lawyers sitting on either side of the table nod at you.

“I found it on the job. In a den of man-eating bats. Doesn’t that make it, uh… what’s the word, used to know back when I was talking to lawyers last, uh…”

“Circumstantial,” chimes one of the younger lawyers, “That won’t be an issue here.”

“No? Because I remember it being a pretty big… hurdle in the States.”

“You’re not in the States anymore, Mr. Esperanza. This court belongs wholesale to the Scyths who have been contracted by the United States government to govern approximately 96% of the new Chinese territories. As such, we make the rules.”

All the lawyers smile at you. They remind you of cats.

“Either way… the skull isn’t conclusive.”

Lopez smiles.

“You would think that, wouldn’t you? But it just so happens that the eye socket of the dearly departed contained quite a bit of Mr. Ko’s genetic material. So it doesn’t really matter whether he placed it there intentionally or not.”

Your stomach turns. You don’t really want to know what kind of genetic material it was or how the Scyths might have obtained it. You decide to skip to the point.

“How much am I being paid for this?”

One of the lawyer’s pushes a sealed envelope to you.

“Here’s your official contract. You’ll receive a thousand dollars just for appearing.”

“Just a thousand? I thought-”

Lopez holds a finger to his lips.

“Some things aren’t done on paper, ‘mister’ Esperanza.”

He seems to take a certain relish in pronouncing the “mister”. You’re not sure if he’s in his right mind.

>Discreetly turn on holo-recorder, ask about these things which aren’t done on paper.

>Ask how the trial is actually decided

HYPE!

At least now we can tell Tenten why we never use the sword. All the techniques we have that use a sword would have broken the damn thing.

That said, I would be fully willing to get another bladed weapon of similar length made of chakra metal that we COULD use with the sword. Or of getting a Kyoketsu-Shoge with a cord of chakra wire so we can use it to cut through the things we bind.

Every time I see the OP image I can't help but wonder what Konoha's plan is for when they run out of space on the Hokage Mountain. Those are some big heads, and to keep them at a level where they can all loom over the village sharply limits available space. Once they hit ten or so Hokages there's not going to be any room left. Who will be the first Hokage to admit that it's just not practical to keep adding monuments to an already-overloaded mountain? Will it not happen until all the space has been used up, or will someone recognize the trend and stop the practice early?

Now there's a word I've come to hate. What's wrong with aiming to tell stories?

It seems these days everything is out to create a defining narrative history of their fictional universe, complete with footnotes. The reward for reading is that you get to know the order in which everything happened, like some historian versed entirely in the magical history of a bunch of plastic men. It takes itself so seriously. Why not just write stories about characters in the universe going somewhere new, finding something new and wrecking its shit?

Who cares whether Horus was wearing red underwear or blue? Who cares about the specifics of a planetary assault or the year it took place? Just write something entertaining.

And advance the setting for once. I don't even care if it gets Age of Sigmar'd.

Breathe in and out. Keep slow. Keep steady.

Move with certainty, not impatience. An exercise done too quickly is an exercise done wrong.

The words of Fazim, who was both your brother and your first teacher echo in your mind as you stand in Tasha's courtyard doing an extended version of your usual exercises. The way you're working it's almost like meditating, focusing so much on your breathing and movements that the outside world fades away...

But you are still aware of it. Kind of hard not to be, given that everyone else is in the courtyard with you.

Safi is doing some exercises of her own, testing her wings and seeing what's different about her magic now that she's free.

Tasha is kicked back in a chair with a glass of wine and a book.

Zee is tending to the gardens. You can kind of feel magic coming from her as well, but it's not as potent as what Safi is working with.

Aaand Moriarty is stalking butterflies in the grass. Every now and then you see him pounce on one, or leap up into the air. Most of the time they get away, but occasionally he gets one. Then he panics and mewls until Zee comes over and makes him set the butterfly free.

You breathe in and pull back to a neutral stance, breathing out as you relax and end your routine.

Character concept: professional carpenter and is very, very speedy at it. Throw down some fortifications, repair a boat, rig up a raft in a pinch, all done in minutes. Also his arsenal of saws is very applicable in combat.

Ladies and Gentlemen! I, the Great Warrior Nyle Ransdorm, Slayer of the Red Dragon, Rexyevortel, Destroyer of the Great Arch-Lich, Borvexto "The Restless Sleeper", Peace Bringer to the Three Towns of the Broux Ravines, and Tamer of Deadly Beasts of the Luxicona Plains, would personally like to welcome each and everyone one of you to this; The first official meeting for "The Guild of Mighty and Minor Adventurers"; otherwise soon to be known throughout the land as "The Adventurers Guild"!

Now, before the meeting actually begins, I wish to state that I know this meeting was called for on rather short notice, especially given the fact that our guild was only recently chartered by the local Kingdoms of Authoran. But I feel that several issues need to be dealt with before they really get out of hand.

First of all, whoever it is that has been breaking into the local Governor's residence in the middle of the night in order to "Beautify", his sleeping face while leaving notes stating "Well aren't you a pretty little princess now", please stop! It's getting out of hand, and Lord Governor Giallet Von Born-Vinter has threatened to increase "The Adventurers" Tax to the point where our "Minors" will no longer be able to continue adventureing with us.

Secondly! The First Annual "Guild Bake Sale For Those Suffering From Petrifaction Issues" is less then a week from now, and I have yet to receive any acknowledgements as to who is going to be involved in this. Remember people, we're doing this in order to improve the Guild's image with the local kingdoms after that fiasco last week with Archiburs "Rod of Eternally Rock"...

And Finally! Rumors of yet another "Dark Lord of Eternal Darkness and Endless Sadness" have been popping up here and there throughout the land for the past few days, and I shouldn't have to tell you what it cost the last "Adventurers Guild" to deal with him. So we shall need to come up with a plan to deal with him; just encase the rumors happen to hold true.
