What do I do if a player wants to run a special snowflake that is blatantly at odds with the setting? I dont want to be an ass and tell the kid he cant have his fantasy he has to conform to mine, but I feel like if I just let him roll with it and bend to pander to him it will ruin the game.

Bit more on the situation, its my buddies younger sibling. Technically speaking also an adult, only a few years younger than us, I swear hasn't matured at all since I first met them when we were preteens. The younger sibling, whom I will here after refer to as H, says they only play their predesigned characters, and that they then take and adapt them to the setting. In and of itself this doesn't sound so bad, as long as they do it well it could be k, but I know H, and H never thinks things through, and when I sat down to talk about it to try and work with him on it he described the character as having giant TechnoMagic boxing gloves. We are running a low to mid fantasy medieval game. We all knew that, and we all agreed. I talked him out of the gloves thank goodness, but im worried about where this will go. What do? How does salvage without crushing his little soul and loosing him and potentialy my best player as well.
>>
>>47128475

Saying no is often the best thing a GM can do. Saves you from having to run a game you don't enjoy. Saves them from having a play a character the GM doesn't like. Saves the other players from having to deal with that character. It's best for everybody.

Maybe he'll pout, and that's fine. He's a grown-up and you're (presumably) friends. As long as you believe it's for the best just do it. If the rest of the group disagrees they'll tell you.

Reject any stupid shit that won't fit into the world, if he wants to go pugilist against a troupe of armed mercenaries then let him and make him understand that it's a stupid idea given the setting

Just remember that you're the GM and a good portion of the responsibility for all the fun in the campaign is on you, and you just got to be a bit pragmatic about it
Don't let an idiot ruin everyone's fun, you let him be an idiot and make everyone feel like one for playing your game, or axe his idiot ideas and only hurt one guy's widdle feewings

Tell us about a time you fucked up /tg/

>D&D 5e. Playing wild magic sorceror.
>DM allowed me to have a homebrewed wild magic table with more varied effects that take place whenever I cast a spell, because the default table was a bit boring.
>In town, waiting outside tavern for the rogue to finish meeting with a contact.
>Decide to use prestidigitation to create a little fireworks display for some kids (my character liked to experiment with his abilities)
>Roll on wild magic table
>"Replace the spell you were casting with a random spell of the same level"
>Roll

There was that one time my human fighter got married, but was obliged to do one last job.
The result was the biggest conflict of a millennia and he ended up becoming the BBEG of a campaign I run.
That campaign is awesome (and is ending next Wednesday).
>>
>>47128431
The funny thing is that you fucked up in a different way than you think. Reread Wild Magic Surge.
>>
>>47128493
We houseruled the wild magic surge quite a lot because the default one hardly ever happens and the effects are underwhelming at best. Our homebrewed table had a bigger variety of effects, but you rolled every time you cast a spell. It worked quite well for a 'hugely powerful but can't control it' style of character.

>>47128492
Go on. What was the job? I'm intrigued.

The worst thing one of your previous/your current character has done or the most thing they regret having done in the past.

Pic semi-related.

I've never gotten to play before -- lifetime GM slave. These are recounts of a player I had named Jeremy.

Jeremy likes to start shit. He's a white kid who claims he's in the Crips, then a week later claims the Irish Mafia. Has a pair of nunchucks and a .22 pistol in his trunk. He's super cool.

Anyway, Jeremy was in my Heroes Unlimited campaign some years ago. You never need to worry about splitting your party or a villain when Jeremy is playing -- he's got that shit on lock. So in this campaign Jeremy's character is watching news stations for remote live broadcasts. When he finds one, he flies over to the location, slices off the reporter's skull cap, then eats their brains on live TV. Later we find Jeremy's character in one of the other PC's apartments raping the PC's wife and throwing the couple's baby out a window. The other PC's finally catch up with Jeremy's character and utterly destroy him. Jeremy (the real life one) rages, runs to his car, pops that trunk, then paces around his car for a few minutes with his gun-in-hand. He finally jumps in his car and peels off.
>>
Some time later Jeremy's in another one of my games. This time it's White Wolf's version of Street Fighter. Jeremy's at it again -- pitted himself against the other PCs and has joined Shadowloo. Jeremy constantly enters tournaments the other PCs are in so he can have a chance at defeating them in front of a crowd. He fails -- every single time. At one point the other PCs (out of frustration) jumped Jeremy outside of a mall - causing permanent injuries. Out of pity (and to even the odds a bit), I had the Shadowloo organization hook Jeremy's character up with cybernetics. In the next tournament Jeremy is a powerhouse -- running through everyone on the roster. In the final fight, Jeremy is pitted against one of the other PCs. The fight is really close, but Jeremy ends up nearly winning. He had the other PC severely wounded and locked in a stun. Instead of finishing the PC off, Jeremy decides to parade around the ring and boast. The other PC breaks from the stun and delivers a devastating hurricane kick to Jeremy's head - knocking Jeremy out and winning the tournament.

At this time I had a rule (mostly because of Jeremy) that you couldn't create another character unless your current one was dead. But Jeremy's character wasn't dead - he was alive due to the miracle of modern medicine! Though... a paraplegic vegetable and in ICU on feeding tubes.

Pretty sure Jeremy threatened me with a katana that time.

>I'm tired of cliches
>I'm tired of cliche subverting

Let's try and make fantasy races different but still recognisable.
>Key traits of classic race
>Build the 'different' description around them

For example:
Elves, cute knife-eared longliving magic tree-huggers.
This race has well-developed ears, big eyes and is quite fluffy. In ancient times they were the only sentient race to walk the world. They reached great heights in magitech and created other races, bringing sentience to existing species or creating new ones from scratch. Then, The Big Ecology Fuckup happened and brought Elven race to decline, while other races conquered the world and rooted in their niches.
Surviving elves are:
1)Wood elves - Greenpeace paranoids, and they do have a reason to be afraid of techology. They seek for ways of being "One With Nature", teach other druidism and act like proud world saviours (it's unclear for other races from what do they save the world).
2)Dark elves - "HOW DARE OUR CREATIONS TREAT US LIKE EQUALS WE'LL BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THESE UNTERMENSH REEE" Torture, racism, edgy armor and slavery.
3)High Elves, cautiously recovering and using old technology to MAKE ELVES GR8 AGAIN

'kay. Next one: Dwarves.
Underground craftsmen, fierce warriors who like a good drink and honor their oaths and grudges.
Antmen. They live underground, spend eternities in the hive and have all the time in the world to hone their craft and war skills.
Their beards are necklaces with chains of varying material hanging down, and materials it is made of tells stories to those who know how to decipher them.
Instead of being only female like real-life ants they are 50/50 male/female for shits and giggles.

>inb4 "Sentinel runs this and then doesn't run ever again" again

- - - - - -

The canyon is deep, dark and narrow. Hundreds of metres above you, your squadmates stand on the lip, skylined against the dawn. And before you, embedded into the base of the rockface, is a sheer, featureless metal wall, somehow more vibrant than steel, somehow exuding a light of its own. A perfectly angular square tunnel bores into the rock, emitting a blue glow from no visible source.

"That tunnel is not a natural formation," you say.

You are newly minted Sergeant Dan Churchill, ODST, and currently the boss of this little ground team. You and your Rookies, Erika Lund, have just completed a drop from orbit. Complications have forced you to land at the bottom of this deep canyon, while the rest of your squad have landed at the top.

"What the hell IS that?" asks Levern 'Lancer' Kendrick, your heavy weapons specialist.
"No idea," you reply. "We should probably find out. Dispatch, are you seeing this?" There's dead air. "Dispatch? Captain Becker?"
"We're reading them up here," says Matilda, your Spartan-III. "The canyon might be blocking radio signals. We're routing your feed up to them, at any case."
"What do they want us to do?" you ask.
There's a pause as Matilda relays your query. "Captain Becker says investigate it, obviously. She's being tight lipped about the details, but she says this is big and it's not Covenant."
"Did she just say 'not fucking Covenant'?" Erika asks from beside you.
"That's exactly what Captain Becker said," Matilda replies. "But a lady mustn't swear."

"Right then," you start. "What are our options here? Can you guys get down?"
Moana answers you. "We didn't bring jump packs, so it'll take us a good twenty minutes to rappel down this rockface safely, maybe more."
"I could jump," Matilda tells you. "I've had worse."
"Well I ain't jumping," Lancer says. "Even then, I've got a lot of delicate kit up here. Wouldn't do to drop it."
"The same goes for me," Moana mentions.
Erika breaks in, tentatively. "Uh, Dan, you might want to think about the signal blocking thing. Maybe we shouldn't all come down here at once."
"Good call," you tell her.

why are they treated as druids that are okay with using metal?
