What's the saddest love story you've seen during your tabletop career?

Had a Pygmalion story between my decker and the AI he was trying to create. He died and it was doubtful if the program ever reached sentience. That whole story was pretty sad.

My character had a Mosin Nagant that he loved like a child, he cleaned it every day, polished it every week, and spoke to it like it was a person. It was thrown in a fire. There were no survivors, enemy or otherwise.

I've always wanted to play tabletop games, and would love to set sessions up for my group of friends but I have no idea where to start, or even how to play anything. So If any of you can recommend a good game to start learning tabletop rpgs and how to get started with everything I'd be very greatful.

Do you have a group to play with? Sounds like you do.

Talk to them about what kind of game they want to play (at least genres) and then look for a game in that genre.

You can have a board game night too, but with actually good board games.

Any board games you could recommend? And as for genre we're all into fantasy/scifi so there's a lot to choose from.

So I'm going to run a campaign with my players as members of this defunct noble house who go to reclaim their birthright. The major feature of the game will be the "strategic layer", in which players can spend "Charter Points" (earned on missions or by exchanging a certain amount of GP) to improve their estate, and later, holdings. I've got a decent number of ideas for this, but I'm interested to see what people think of the concept and what kind of ideas you might have. Pic related is the first and second tier of the upgrade path, and you can see what comes in tier 3, but basically I want to have each upgrade provide a tangible, meaningful benefit to the players.

In addition, every time the players clear a whole row/rank, they receive an extra bonus for free. They aren't shown in the image but I'll paste them in here:

>RANK 1 COMPLETION BONUS
>Players may now donate GP to the House Coffer, to exchange it for Charter Points/CP. Every 3,000 GP converts to 1 CP. Players may also extract CP for gold, at a rate of 1 CP to 1,500 GP.

>RANK 2 COMPLETION BONUS
>Players may now winter at the estate, and receive official recognition from the crown. Players now have access to the hinterlands around the estate, and legal dominion within.

I actually really like the concept, but how are you going to deal with having multiple characters? It seems like most players want to have very disparate backgrounds, and are very hard to meld into one cohesive metaplot like this. Honestly, vanilla D&D is probably not the best setting for things like this, but I can't think of any better system.

I got into D&D almost a year ago. I enjoyed creating a character and adventuring but my DM was terrible, This guy watched too much anime so almost every reoccurring character was some 12 year old girl that was all powerful. His idea of humor was "oh your character is felt up by a gay dwarf" or "you wake up the wrong gender". I'm looking for a DM that doesn't do that.

Any advice for a first time dungeon master? Creating stories and enemies is so fun to me but I have trouble with map placement. How many encounters is too much in one forest for example? And is it too much to create some custom weapons for use in my campaign? Somethin like "Holy Sword Lombardia, one per day can restore health to all allies withing sight distance".

Any tips?

The question is not "how many encounters is too much in one forest". The forest can be Llanowar and cover a million square miles. The question is "how many encounters is too much in one DAY" and the answer depends on the edition you're running.

Alright, I'm confused as shit. I know D&D divides itself into different books, but which one shows basic stuff like cosmology and the 8 schools of magic and stuff like that? I guess the player handbook is the one that lists all the classes and their spells and abilities, but some of them seem to be like "Arcane, Divine and Martial Heroes". Does that mean they left some out or is that just the most up to date class listing?

What version are you looking for?

Player's handbook or the DM's handbook should have everything you want.
>>
>>47149677
Well I have what says it's the 4th edition Player's Handbook (doesn't say this in the PDF so far as I can see, the file is just named that) and it doesn't say one word about the schools of magic. In fact it lists spells in weird categories like (Arcane, Nature).
>>
>>47149663
>Players Handbook
Character creation and most if not all rules.
>Dungeon Masters Guide
Creating the campaign and any needed rules not in the PH
>Monster Manual
Stats for Monsters

Supplements have other stuff to add on top of this, such as more classes. But these three books are all you need.

What is your favorite resolution mechanic for dealing damage in combat /tg/?

Body and Stun damage.

I really like both Legends of the Wulin and Exalted 3e's combat mechanics, especially when it comes to the damage dealing.
LotW has 'ripples' and 'rippling rolls'. Any successful attack causes at least 1 ripple. If you hit hard enough, you also cause a rippling roll, which can inflict conditions, like an injury or even a fated connection of some sort. The more ripples, the more likely and more intense the condition.
You even take a single rippling roll at the end of combat!
Exalted 3e I'm less familiar with the details, but essentially you attack normally to build up your initiative and drive down your opponent's, until you decide to deal a decisive blow and spend all that initiative to try and finish off the opponent for good.

Both great systems that aren't just "ok I take 3 damage"

So, /tg/, my Pathfinder DM had a breakdown recently because of the absolutely horseshit characters that one of the players in our group of regulars decides to bring to the table every time. Let's just TL;DR - Female minotaur with giant tits, loli dragon riders that constantly make sexual innuendos and wear not-enough clothes, kitsune mammoth riders, a dragon-kin magus with way-too-edgy Katanas that have six demon souls and were bathed in the blood of virgin teenagers. (It was a flavored version of Blade Bound Magus.) You get the idea. We humor him because it's never really disruptive, but the last time he did it, it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

So, finally, our favorite DM broke down and has refused to DM anything... Yet, in all his grace and wisdom That Guy has so kindly decided to host a campaign for us until our regular DM can 'get a grip'... one that he told me to build a character for "Level 40" and "don't worry about money, get whatever you want"... But fuck it, I want to humor it so I can see it crash to the ground and burn.

I'm not so alien to the concept of going above 20th level in this shit, but what the fuck do I even do with this? He said to take any template we wanted, but asked that we run thrid-party material past him before playing it. I thought about doing something like Living Monolith + Grave Knight but I don't know where to start designing this absolutely dogshit character.

Should I do something to fuck with the game? No mythic, apparently, but I've got literally everything else in the Pathfinder tool kit available.

Don't level 40 literally can not have balanced encounters.

If you really want to be a wizard 20/cleric 20. Use your infinite money for infinite wishes. Use your 40 HD to make infinite hyper power simulacruma from your bubble base full of whales on the sun. Also kill the That Guy. Not his campaign. Like actually murder him.
>>
>>47148117

It's tempting. The 'kill him' thing. On the other hand I was considering just rolling up a 20th level dwarf commoner, since we can use 'any class'.
>>
>>47148169
Do it anon. He makes the absurd. Make the absurdly dull. Roll 1 thousand peasants and throw them at his campain

So, why haven't smaller scales become a bigger thing in wargaming? Gamers clearly have a love of aircraft, mechs, and massive gribblies on the table, but for some reason games like Warmachine and 40k insist on doing it in 28mm, a scale that is absolutely terrible for it. You end up with massive parking lots and barren tables because otherwise they can't fit anything on it.

Obviously there's games out there like Flames of War, Dropzone Commander, Epic, etc. that have embraced smaller scales and as a result can fit a lot more action in on the table, I'm just confused why smaller scales haven't been more widely embraced. The new Halo game seems to be giving a ray of hope that not all game companies are crazy, but just by watching some people's reaction you'd have thought somebody had shot their dog.

Is there something I'm missing here? I mean, you want to throw down with a goofy apocalypse game because you own 4,000pts of models like what used to happen back in 5th ed 40k, I understand. However nowadays with 40k as an example, you're regularly seeing models released that are 6+ inches tall, have massive footprints, and require massive gaps in terrain just so they can move around being considered "standard" units to be used in normal games. I just don't get why when you're trying to push that kind of game, you wouldn't drop down to 15mm (if you want infantry models that still have personality) or smaller like 10mm (if you just want to focus on kickass vehicles and mechs like DZC does)

I get why GW does it, after all they make more money per player that way, I just don't get why gamers gravitate to 28mm scale for battles of that size when they work so much better (not to mention become much cheaper) to drop down to a smaller scale. Are people just scared to try it because of painting or something?
43 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>47147263
Bigger models can have more detail and are more fun to paint.
>>
You just can't get as pretty a models, and huge games are more expensive. Newcomers look at a table full of little models and want something with less.

I guess I can see that, but is that really true though?

I know a lot of people are scared to try painting anything smaller than 28mm but after painting everything from 28mm to 6mm I have to say the smaller the model gets the easier it is, especially if the model is good quality.

Hell, DZC is a good example. This is the BOTTOM of a walker that's barely 4 inches long and the size of a small apartment complex. It has more detail than most GW 28mm infantry models have just on the bottom.

>>47147283
>just can't get as pretty models

Eh, I don't know about that. Again, this is opinions and all that, but I've seen some stunning small scale armies. Those horus heresy epic armies I see on here occasionally are stunning for example.

>huge games are more expensive. Newcomers look at a table full of little models and want something with less.

Kind of confused what you mean by this. Are you saying smaller scale games are more expensive or less expensive? It sounds like you're saying the latter but I've never seen a 2,000pts Flames of War or DZC army that is half as much as a 2,000pts 40k army. granted some flames of war armies can be the same price if you were insane enough to collect metal and resin conscript tank hordes, never seen one in person though

Of course there's the old "opinions and assholes" saying, its just I feel like people refuse to give it a try because of misconceptions. I never get the "it's harder to paint/more expensive/doesn't look as good" because I play these games and none of those hold true to me I guess. Especially not the price thing.

Obsidian shatters into razors. Obsidian is great for weapons, but you would have to be retarded to make armor out of it, evendors if its enchanted you couldn't pay me to wear that.
