What are good ways to fluff a plasma weapon malfunctioning, aside from it just exploding?
17 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Plasma is hot.

If the end of the barrel gets very melty, the end of the gun would probably just splatter all over the place.

Which could be a funny feature as well, just rig a plasma rifle to turn into a one use shotgun that just sharts liquid metal and plasma in a cone.
>>
>>48971068
Plasma dissipates insanely rapidly. Like at an exponential rate. If the magnetic field generator that focuses the blast failed then you would be lucky to burn a piece of paper four feet away, much less have a viable weapon.
>>
>>48974296
Why do I get the feeling there's a rogue trader out there who uses a modified artefact plasma gun as a hairdryer now..

i don't think it will work anon
>>

No, it would work with a set of clips and releases - when the BOH hits the top, it would hit a clip that allows it to enter, but not exit. The "small" weight hitting the top would trigger a lever that would release that clip. The same could be done if needed for the other weight.

The main problem with this model is that while it does have the potential for 'perpetual' motion (at least until the parts wear out), it would not have constant or steady motion - there would be a pause in every cycle while the bag fell down, making it less useful for a lot of "engine" purposes.

Also, this assumes that constantly stuffing a weight into and out of a bag of holding won't cause wear on the bag and eventual magical failure.

If you've got magic anyways, just use it to put a heavier gravity field on one side of a drive wheel (weights around the edge would make it faster), and attach a shaft to the drive wheel. The heavier side would go down, the lighter side would go up, and you've got rotation until the gravity field is cancelled. Much simpler mechanically, and less likely to fail due to parts breaking or not being lined up properly.

How would you even fight a 4 dimensional creature? It's be the equivalent of you fighting people inside a sheet of paper; you could stab them at well and they could only hurt a small cross-section of your hand.

Like-wise, a true 4D creature, assuming it could find your "plane" of existence, would be able to fuck your shit with impunity. You would need actual supernatural insight to be able to dodge or hurt these creatures.

I had these appear in a Savage Worlds game, the characters could only hurt them by going on hold to when one appeared to eviscerate a villager and shooting it. But even that feels too kind in some ways; at worst it would be like a papercut.

Am I wrong in saying these 4D creatures would basically be unbeatable? Thinking of adding them into my setting as elder things one dare not summon.

>>48970069
That a valid way to run them, just don't actually put them any where your players have to deal with them and keep them as a lore only thing because it would be a rather no-fun instant-lose scenario.
>>
>>48970069

Attack the DM. This dimension is just as valid as the story one, but in this one you can actually hurt something.
>>
The same way as the 2D can beat a 3D creature: Just cut them in half. If a 2D creature runs sideways into a 3D it can just cut a part off with ease since 2D is perfectly thin, so there will be no resistance or whatsover. Same way shall 3D work with 4D.

I think I have some kind of an idea for a low-level PF adventure but need some help with coming up with how to flesh it out.

So in Occult Adventures there is a wondrous Item called a "tin cap" it's exactly what you think it is, so I thought of something, what if someone gave a few of these magical tin hats to a bunch of conspiratory wackjobs so as to further exasperate their paranoia and delusions, And the PC's stumble onto this?

Well seems like it's the foundation to lead the PCs into a much larger adventure but got stuck on a few things.

1. why, I'm trying to think of why someone would go to so much trouble to give a bunch of conspiritards magical tin hats that will make them even more paranoid than they already are? what sinister end could be achieved by this?

2. the wackjobs own conspiracies. Sooner or later the PC's are going to want to know these guy's motives and I need to come up with a conspiracy theroy that, in a world of wizards and dragons, still sounds ridiculous on the surface, and when you look deeper into it, it remains absurd. yeah I'm going by what was talked about in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zZo1hLPM38 and make it so there isn't even a grain of truth to what they, the antagonists, believe. It all just some convoluted belief that shelters their fragile minds from the harsh reality that random events can have huge impacts. while simultaneously building up their own self esteem. Problem I'm having is when surrounded by the fantastic, how do you come up with something absurd that will be seen as such right away?

>>
>>48968186
For number 1, perhaps by using the caps to exacerbate the conspiracy theorists the antagonist helps to further spread misinformation to hide their own, actually true conspiracy? Alternatively maybe some of these conspiracy theorists get so paranoid that they begin to actually act out against the individuals/groups they believe are part of these conspiracies, thus adding some chaos into the mix. Don't know exactly why a villain would choose this method though, seems inefficient.
>>
>>48968242
>actually true conspiracy?
I'm trying to steer away from the "conspiracy nuts turn out to be correct" troupe that often comes up in these subjects. I suppose I could see them wanting to get them so worked up that they start acting on their delusions, just to what end has got me stumped.

Maybe as a diversion? as the Nutty McNutters go about causing problems everyone will just assume evil guy's own actions are part of that debacle and not look too hard into it?

Maybe Evil Guy himself is not quite right in the head either and his actions don't entirely make sense either?

Hmm... I don't know...
>>
>>48968890
I didn't say that the conspiracy nuts were actually correct, that's my whole point. The point is that they're not correct, but because they fill the media with their crap it helps the antagonist by diverting the attention from them and their conspiracy.

>how do you game-balance a race that is magically powerful but NOT physically weaker than others?

One usable hand. Their right hand touches this world, their left hand touches only the spirit world. They're magically powerful and always have one hand free for casting, but they can only use one-handed weapons.

This can be either physical (left arm fades into a ghostly outline) or a cultural taboo (to use the left hand for a physical task taints it and grounds out all your magic power.)

>How do you make the "species that is physically weak/frail but magically powerful" trope interesting for a new setting?

Make an interesting race that incorporates that design element. It's fine, doesn't need a revamp, as long as the race is creative in other ways.

I've always liked the premise of the game Freedom Force, where aliens decide that simply conquering Earth is too boring, so they decide to grant the worst of humanity superpowers. Some cunt sabotaged the plan, but plenty of scum, a gangster included, did become supervillains.
