Sup tg, I kindly seek your wisdom.

In a nutshell: my group is running into too many disagreements while playing Pathfinder so we (I) would like to explore alternate game systems.

We have been playing the same game with varying DMs for 7(?) years quite casually and have tried 3.5, 4e and Pathfinder. Our group consists of long-term friends and playing is an important excuse to actually get together and meet up.

The real problem is that this game was the first RPG most of us played and while some members of the group have only played it during the years, and others have tried numerous other games. So our group is quite heterogeneous both in role-playing drive and skill.

Once we get the current story arc out of the way, we'll have a discussion on what kind of a game we want to play. At that time I would like to be able to offer some suggestions on a new system.

Our setting is quite generic high fantasy with magic being pretty much straight out of the DnD manuals and being very common. Fluff isn't that important, since things can be re-fluffed.

The things we are looking for in a system are (some of these are contradictory, because of differing wishes by players):

- Rules light, as few splatbooks as possible
- Characters are not built around combat like in DnD
- Possibility to implement a somehow structured magic system
- No need for a grid
- Alternatively tactical grid-based combat
- Bonus points for PDFs

So far I've been thinking about FATE or Praedor, but neither of these really is the optimal solution.

Thank you, o great hive mind.

No that's probably like the worst class for a goblin given they have a negative 2 to Charisma in Pathfinder(which is where your image is from).

In a PF context, they would make pretty good Urban Barbarians especially with Dervish Dance.

I play a lot of vidya RPGs (Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment ftw), but have only played a few sessions of actual tabletop DnD.
A few of my buddies that are skeptical of embracing nerdism want to test it out to see what the hype is about.

They want me to run a game tonight, so any tips for a first time DM who is relatively new to the game themselves?

Plan on doing 5e because that's what I played, but will probably end up keeping things as simple as possible and bending the game rules.

Help me come up with a basic one-shot campaign to keep the normies entertained and convinced them tabletop RPGs can actually be fun
13 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Don't try anything grandiose tonight. DM takes prep, and you won't come up with anything good in just a few hours. Take this first session to carefully go over the character crestion process with your group, make sure everyone understands the basics of the game.
Go through the basic mechanics; after rolling characters, take then through a really basic adventure. Maybe they were hired by a village's sheriff to find the lair of a beast that has been terrorizing the farmers and slay said beast.
Make a very basic dungeon, a couple of rooms with some traps, minor treasure, some mooks and then the beast at the end.

D&D isn't really the right game for that task, especially if you're an inexperienced GM.

If your friends have no gaming experience whatsoever and considering your lack of time, Fiasco might be a better bet for you.
>>
>>48954847

Fiasco is a good choice, but D&D isn't really that hard to get.

I'd also recommend Savage Worlds and FATE.

Last time I posted about the low price of Eldritch Moon singles (I compared it to Dragon Maze in terms of value), /tg/ told to wait until after the Pro-Tour. So, now that the Pro-Tour is over, why didn't the prices rise? Is this actually a dud of a set like Dragon Maze?

>So, now that the Pro-Tour is over, why didn't the prices rise?
They did. They've also dropped back down as more packs are opened and hype dissipates (it's been like 3 weeks). Which prices are you referring to?
>>
>>48955169

The expected value on a box is way, way down, lower than previous sets. Highest is Tamiyo, Field Researcher as I think the only card that's worth more than $20, and even then just /barely/. In fact there are only 5 cards in the set that are above $5 in value.

Sorry, I meant 10 cards over $5, typo'd.

/tg/, we really, REALLY need to talk about the recent surge in popularity of 5e around here, especially the trend of recommending it as a good system for "introducing" players to our hobby.

I understand that there is an obsession with being subversive and finding the most super specialest alternative to 3.PF possible, but having finally taken the time to read into 5e and the reasons why this game has caught on around here and other forums I feel the need to be frank: this NEEDS to stop. I try as hard as I can not to be a "badwrongfun" style curmudgeon, but this is not a role playing game. Full stop. This is not a role playing game, and this disingenuous promotion of it as such is legitimately dangerous to this hobby. This is an exercise in self-congratulatory free form group storytelling.

This is a "game" where the danger of literally any challenge is by design arbitrary, not just from encounter to encounter, but from action to action. There's no actual combat or tactics at play, everyone takes turns basically describing a "cool fantasy battle" and resolve everything through "attack" and "save" rolls triggered at the GM's whim. This is a game proud of being anti-structure, where the goal is to explain to the GM how many cool things your players do instead of actively overcoming any challenges in your way.

It's chaos. Consequences of certain failures are decided collaboratively. The GM is encouraged to be more of an antagonistic player than an actual referee of any rules. At /tg/'s suggestion I watched a few videos of people playing this. At one point the *GM* asked the *PLAYERS* what rumors they had heard in town.

I get that the people involved in this game by admission shill it everywhere, but please stop pushing this as a system for beginners. It's dangerous to our hobby and the behaviors it promotes encourages entitled players with disruptive expectations for how parties are meant to work.

Stop.

>Two new Legendary Lords…
>...with new quest chains, magic items and skill trees
>Two new additional Lord types
>Five all-new battlefield units plus variants
>18 elite Regiments of Renown
>Free Legendary Lord and five new battle maps for all players

>Following the best-selling Call of the Beastmen, the first Lord Pack for Total War: WARHAMMER introduces two new Legendary Lords from Warhammer Fantasy Battles – Volkmar the Grim for the Empire, and Helman Ghorst for the Vampire Counts. Alongside this, The Grim & The Grave also adds two new lord types to the game with the Vampire Counts receiving the fearsome Strigoi Ghoul King, and the Arch Lector, mightiest of all warrior priests, joining the Empire.

>In addition, both the Empire and Vampire Counts unit rosters are being expanded with two brand new units each. The Knights of the Blazing Sun, the zealous Flagellants and versatile Free Company Militia join the ranks of the Empire, while the vampire counts will see their undead hordes imbued with dark magic by the gruesome Corpse Cart and volatile Mortis Engine. The rosters of both factions are also further expanded by the addition of Regiments of Renown, unique unit variants with special traits and abilities, whose prowess in battle have immortalized them in the annals of the Old World.

>As part of Total War: WARHAMMER’s ongoing free content program, an update released alongside The Grim and The Grave will introduce a number of unique new battle maps and Vlad von Carstein as a free legendary lord for all players. The first – and arguably greatest – of the Vampire Counts is a nigh-unrivalled practitioner of the Lore of Vampires, granting Vanguard Deployment to all units under his command, whose thirst for the throne of the Empire rivals even that of Mannfred himself.

So Vladdy is coming fa/tg/uys.

Or Hangul, depending on how precise "no ambiguity" is meant to be.

In a world where the races have all integrated fully throughout the lands, what would the naming conventions be like? Would a human and an elf from the same cultural region be equally likely to be named John Hancock, or would there still be human names and elfy names?
19 posts and 3 images submitted.

Family names would be different. And elf parents would give their kids elfy names.
Probably not "Starleaf Greenshadow", but natural names like Emeraldine, Aurel, Pinea, Stormy, Atlanta, etc Or elvish second names á la Johnny Nuraniel Smith, Theresa Utalarin Stormbound, etc
>>
>>48952017
> or would there still be human names and elfy names?
This.

Look at Germany, Bavarian names are different from Northern German names, for example. Sure, you have names that are used everywhere, but in Germany, you even has stereotypes about the common names of regions (Seppl for Bavarians, Ronny for East Germans, Malte for Northerners etc.).
>>
>>48952017
There's still gonna be the separation as others have pointed out, but you're probably gonna get some bastardizations of names between languages e.g. Francois to Francis, Jorjé to George, etc.

So we all know evolution games, right? I find they always get cluttered with rules. When I started the games in 2011 I kept it very open. Edit creature, short description. But I noticed over time people began bickering. "that's not possible!", "too much at once!", "shouldn't this be extinct by now?", etc.

So I propose a game with the simplest rules:

1) Take the "creature" in pic related and edit it. Save as .png

2) edit other players' creatures as well.

That's it. No descriptions needed, no bickering. Just good 'ol MS paint fun.

What are consumer goods like in the 40k universe?

There's tons of autismal fact-sheets on things like bolters and the various models of tank, but what are the family sedans and household furniture like? Who do people who aren't combat units dress? Do ballpoint pens exist?

They are all over the place. Military equipent is somewhat standartized byDepartment Munitorum, so it can be catalogued. Civilian stuff? That's not standartized, and varies fromplanet to planet gratly. There is no hope todescribe it. Basically, anything youcanimagine either is a thing somewhere, or at least used to be a thing.
>>
>>48951178

This.

Like, the one constant might be that everything has skulls on it and that's a big maybe.
>>
>>48951146
While >>48951178 is right that it varies from planet to planet, it should also be noted that the idea of "consumer goods" would not exist on all planets.

While some planets in the Imperium have market economies of a kind we recognize, many wouldn't. In command economies and feudal economies, the idea of "consumer goods" wouldn't really come up. It's only a coherent concept in economies quite like our own and on a planetary level, 40k exhibits a riot of diversity in economic models.
